WILMINGTON, Mass. — The position that’s most fragile for any NHL playoff team, but particularly the Bruins, is defense.
Right now, if Boston suffered an injury to one its top six, it would have to turn to Steven Kampfer, who has struggled toward the end of his rookie season, or Shane Hnidy, who hasn’t played all year because of injury.
There’s no way outside of wrapping the players in bubble wrap to keep the Bruins 100 percent healthy, but now that Boston has wrapped up a playoff berth here’s my plan to at least make sure they’re at their full energy level once the postseason begins.
Starting Tuesday against Chicago, I would rest one of the Bruins’ top six defensemen — starting with Adam McQuaid, who has been a shot-blocking machine and looked a little weary in Philadelphia. Kampfer and Hnidy would then rotate filling that player’s spot.
There are seven games left, so you could get Kampfer and Hnidy three or four games to sharpen their skills before they’re hopefully not needed in the postseason. And then you could get each of the top six one game off with one blueliner — preferably captain Zdeno Chara — getting two games off to be rested and ready for the most important time of the year.
As for the goaltending, I would just go with whatever No. 1 Tim Thomas wants. That could be something as simple as a rotation or a two-and-one share with Tuukka Rask. Up front, the Bruins could take a similar tact as I presented on D, that is if Michael Ryder still has anything to offer the team after his second healthy scratch in as many weeks. Mark Recchi, Patrice Bergeron and Milan Lucic could all use at least one game off.
The Bruins’ defense corps has been taxed all season long with its shot-blocking, minute-munching and fighting. At least one game off for each player back there would be well-deserved.

Knight’s teammate and London’s saviour is undrafted goalie Michael Houser. He is as good or better than 11th overall Jack Campbell.(2010) They are both americans and I’m sure Houser has come onto most teams radar now. Too bad because he could have been had with a sixth rd. pick.
Kingston will be done tonight. I hope they bring Spooner to Providence to play out the sked. Knight won’t make it in time. His London team could upset Owen Sound and who knows from there. He has played great in the first two games of the series.
Barring any major free agent signing this summer, Caron will be with this club come Opening Night ’11. He’s still got room to improve but he’s going to be a great fit on the PK and with Bergy when/if Rex retires. Just watch.
I think Caron is in the minors to see if they can develop a better pair of hands on him. He knew how to score in junoirs, and he seems to play a lot like Recchi, but with less finesse at this point.
Caron looks like another checking line grinder to me. I think if Knight makes Providence next year he will be our next big prospect
A whole bunch of nothing, didn’t see anything with Caron that is so special. He doesn’t do anything really well.
I sure hope he gives Recchi a breather! I’d like to see both Caron and Sauve give some guys a break and let the fans fantasize about what’s to come.
get both sheriff and kampfer in there.
[...] might not go to the extreme I suggested and rest every defenseman at least once over the final two weeks of the season. But he obviously has a plan in mind for rookie Steven Kampfer and veteran Shane [...]
Good stuff MK, with 7 games there is plenty of opportunity to get these guys some rest.
It may sound stupid, but I’m campaigning for Rask to get a start in the playoffs in the first round. He’s been playing much better and I would hate to see Thomas get tired with the playoff schedule
Absolutely! i was actually hoping for Chara to get suspended on the Max hit. Thinking it would be a great gift for him to relax for a couple games. But these guys are creatures of habit and they don’t want to break routine. maybe they could do like sit the Krejci line on the second to last game, then the Bergeron line the last game. and D lines the same. so just the last 2 games they get the extra rest…
Either way I think a little rest is something CJ should consider. Nice call Matt!
Yep start rotating some guys in not only to give rest but to keep the press box crew sharp. Might not be a bad idea to call up Caron & Arniel or Hammil and let them get some reps with the big club (assuming they’ll be Black Aces) in case they need to be called on in the playoffs.
