It sounds like the Bruins’ Providence (AHL) farm club, which has three games remaining in its season before packing up for the summer, will receive an infusion of more youth this weekend.
Several reports, including that of well-known prospects expert Kirk Luedeke, confirm that Bruins 2010 second-round draft picks Jared Knight and Ryan Spooner will be signing ATOs with the P-Bruins and will strap on the skates over the weekend.
Knight’s season with the London (OHL) Knights wrapped up with a six-game defeat in the first round of the playoffs. The 19-year-old tallied six points (four goals) in those six games after he racked up 70 points (25 goals) in 68 games during the regular season.
Spooner, 19, and his Kingston (OHL) team went out in five games in the playoffs. He finished with six points (four goals) in those games after his 81-point (35 goals) regular season for the Frontenacs and Peterborough Petes in 64 regular-season games.
While joining Providence now is not a guarantee they’ll be skating in the pros next season, it’s a great tool to jump start both players’ careers and allow them to hit the ground running at next season’s training camp.
Plus, it gives a nice dose of excitement to a Providence team that’s suffered through a disappointing, playoff-less season and plays two of its last three games at home.

@Aaron. You’re right about the aggreement. My apoligies to Jeff. I thought that Schenn was 19 but it may have be a conditioning stint in Manchester. I knew D’amigo was 19 with the Marlies but he was an RPI player that belonged to Kitchener but hadn’t played there yet. The Jan, Birthday does help players as studys have shown. I remember Patrik Stefan was 17 when he played his first pro game.
Nifty, that’s actually incorrect. The NHL/CHL agreement requires that the player have turned 20 by December 31 of the year in which the season commences. So in both Spooner and Knight’s case (January ’92 b-days), neither will be eligible to play in the A until the 2012/13 season.
At B’s Development Camp last summer, Knight reminded me of Randy Burridge and Spooner reminded me a bit of Mike Ribeiro…
Thanks Nifty well the P-Bruins will be loaded with speed next year!
Knight & Spooner will either have to make the big club or go back to juniors. The rule is the agreement between the CHL and the AHL. A player has to be 20 years old by Dec 31st or have completed 4 years of junior play. A player can do a conditioning stint in the AHL (Schenn this year) but Schenn is back in juniors now. *Now rule doesn’t apply to NCAA or Euro players who have to be at least 18 and not playing in the CHL.
@Jeff. You’re thinking of the 18 year old rule. They can play nine games before they have to be sent back. If they play 10 then you have to keep them with the big club. Brayden Schenn played in all three leagues this year as a 19 year old. He won’t be 20 until August.
Next year they will either have to play in Boston or Junior, they are both too young for the AHL.
Once you’re 19 you can play anywhere SanDog.
Matt, If Knight and Spooner don’t turn 20 before the start of the AHL and OHL seasons they would have to spend another year in the Juniors ? Correct
So.. do we know anything more about these two after another season in the minors?
Knight played his heart out against Owen Sound. He took some vicious hits in a brutal series. Please think about donor cards and bone marrow registry. The world was a better place when Yale’s Mandi Schwarz was here with us. Sorry Matt. I know this isn’t Facebook.
