Marchand/By S. Bradley

Brad Marchand is definitely too rugged a character to be classified as a “Cinderella.”

But there’s no doubt he’s enjoying a magical rookie season.

Over the weekend, the Bruins winger was rewarded for his efforts with the coveted Seventh Player Award for performing above and beyond expectations. For his production last week in Boston’s four games, he was voted the Bruin of the Week:

Who should be the Bruin of the Week?

  • Tim Thomas (35%, 33 Votes)
  • Nathan Horton (16%, 15 Votes)
  • Zdeno Chara (11%, 10 Votes)

In the Bruins’ drive to wrap up both a playoff berth and the Northeast Division title last week, Marchand was instrumental. He recorded at least one point in all four games and finished the week with 2-3-5 totals and a plus-2 rating. His game-winning goal in Philadelphia punched Boston’s ticket back to the postseason.

Marchand’s 21 goals have him in fourth place on the Bruins’ scoring chart for the season. He’s come a long way since he was a fourth-line hopeful, which was his role when he arrived at training camp last fall. Since then he has transformed into something of a second-line sniper. But he hasn’t had the help of a fairy godmother or any other outside source. He’s done it through hard work and confidence.

There might not be a fairy-tale equivalent for what Marchand has done this season, but it’s still a great story.
