No magic potion at lottery, so Bruins will pick at No. 9
The Bruins did not win the draft lottery tonight.
So they stayed in the slot they were supposed to be in: No. 9, with the second first-round draft pick acquired in the Phil Kessel trade from Toronto. The Bruins already cashed in last June with the drafting of Tyler Seguin and Jared Knight with picks also acquired from the Maple Leafs.
The Bruins had a 2.7 percent chance of moving up to fifth overall. New Jersey actually moved up from No. 8 to No. 4.
I’ll have more on the draft as it gets closer. For now, obviously, it’s all about the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Here’s a look at the draft order as it stands right now for non-playoff teams:
1. Edmonton Oilers
2. Colorado Avalanche
3. Florida Panthers
4. New Jersey Devils
5. New York Islanders
6. Ottawa Senators
7. Atlanta Thrashers
8. Columbus Blue Jackets
9. Boston Bruins (from Toronto)
10. Minnesota Wild
11. Colorado Avalanche (from St. Louis)
12. Carolina Hurricanes
13. Calgary Flames
14. Dallas Stars
Agreed Hamilton will be gone by then. I like Beaulieu as well he will be there at nine and he’s got a nasty streak on top of the fact that he’s bigger than Murphy.
No probs mb. I was hoping they had to give it up this year. I like Beaulieu too. His dad coaches the ‘D’ on the OHL’s Knights. Murphy too. But his size could be a problem on the back end. Just like Ryan Ellis I worry about 5 on 5 play. Could always try him up front as though.
Nifty thanks for the clarification, and clearly they won’t.
Aaron – agree on Oleksiak. Too risky.
I think Hamilton will be gone. If they go D, I like Beaulieu. Murphy is this years Skinner to me – big risk no one seems to have a good handle on, plus he’s a liliputian. We all know how Skinner turned out though..
If they continue to add up front – I like Armia and Baertschi who they could probably get by dropping back a couple spots.
… also not sold on Oleksiak. He’s a reach at #9, hope they don’t risk it. Not that I know anything, but I have a feeling he’s more Jurcina than Chara/Meyers.
@ Spencer – actually I’ve read that this draft is about 15 deep in top end talent and outside the consensus top 3 (RNH, Larrson, Landeskog) there may not be much variation in the remaining top end talent, and the gap between those 3 and the rest of the pack isn’t that large. You can see that in the wide variation in mock drafts/scouting reports from various sources. This draft year lacks high end elite talent, but its not lacking for depth. We’re likely to get a very good player and at #9 that player has a pretty decent shot at being one of the best players in this draft year if they get it right.
I don’t think the B’s can pass on Murphy if he’s available. In fact I’d like to see PC move up to get him if possible. Other guys in that range that I wouldn’t mind: Hamilton & Siemens as mentioned, Strome, Zibanejad, Beaulieu. Basically anyone but Saad, by all accounts he’s likely to top out as an NHL mucker, IMO not the type of player you burn this pick on. Go big or go home.
The Devils have 4 years to give up that pick. I doubt this is the year mb.
Hey Matt,
I thought the Devils lost their first round pick this year in the Kovalchuk disaster?
about a year ago, Trem
take the best player available, whether it be a forward or D. i dont think the cupboard is that full of forwards. When are people going to realize that Hamill is a bust and will not make it to the B’s?
If Murphy is available at 9, hes too good to pass up. Im not sold on Siemens at the number 9 pick. He could turn out to be a solid defenseman, but his open style hitting is almsot out of the NHL game. Its interesting to youtube Scott stevens 10 best hits. 5 are certain suspensions, mostly long term. 2-3 are penalties, and only 2-3 are deemed clean. Anyways, back to the prospects, the Bruins need to focus on getting the best player available. The draft really drops off after the top 4, so I wouldnt be suprised to see Chiarelli trade down or create some sort of package to maximize the value of his assets.
Some talk about Jamieson Oleksiak, D, Northeastern – at 6,7″ he could be interesting but seems that Siemens and Murphy are the best D talent that could be available at 9.
More realistically I think we’re looking at Duncan Siemens or Murphy. Personally, Siemens sounds like a fantastic Bruin (models his game after Scott Stevens) but Murphy is ridiculously talented.
Jay – Sounds good to me. I don’t know anything about prospects, but NHL.com mock drafts all have Dougie Hamilton going early. One has Ryan Murphy dropping to the B’s.
I like the idea of an offensive D-man.
I agree that the B’s have some good forward prospects, but who knows which ones will work out. You can never have too many. Seguin and Marchand, of course. Caron should make the team next year. Forget about Hamil.
You didn’t mention Suave, Arniel, Knight, Spooner, and Cross.
Take a look at Dougie Hamilton and Ryan Murphy. These are the guys within realistic reach that we should draft, if given the chance.
Yeah, they are both offensive defensemen. That is where I see our needs. I am not saying we need that right now. I am just saying that Boston has shown time and again that they can produce defensive defensemen through the system and Providence (Mark Stuart, Johnny Boychuk, Adam McQuaid), but when you want a point producing defensemen, you have to get them at a price. Adam Larsson is way out of reach, and some would argue that these two guys will be too, but if they are available, I would take them.
We do not need anymore forward talent right now (Tyler Seguin, Brad Marchand, Zach Hamil, Jordan Caron), and there are no goalies available. It seems easy enough to me, what do you guys think?
And Let’s hope toronto gets Pick No. 30 this year.
San Jose got Logan Couture at #9 in 2007. One pick after the B’s took Hamill.
