BOSTON — Brian Gionta was sort of an honorary Bostonian … before.
That is before the New York native became a member of the hated Habs.
Even after he left Boston College, there weren’t a lot of reasons to hate Gionta when he was skating for the Bruins’ non-divisional rival in New Jersey. Now, he’s a member of the team every Bruins backer, and most of their players, can’t stand.
Tonight Gionta added to the reasons to jeer him with both Montreal goals in a 2-0 win at TD Garden in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
After the game, however, the captain didn’t want a lot of credit for his scores.
“No, this time of year, it doesn’t matter who is scoring,” he said. “As long as we get wins. [Goaltender] Carey [Price] did a great job. If you look at some of the saves he made, it is 1-0 game for most of it, and he keeps us in that game. He gives us a chance like he has all year.”
Linemate Scott Gomez set up both goals with steals on Bruins breakouts.
“If anything, I know my job is to get it to Gio. He is a goal-scorer,” said the center.
Well, Gomez did his job. And Gionta did his. It all added up to a Montreal win and a reason for Gionta to get another earful from the Boston faithful in Saturday’s Game 2.

yup, the entire PP setup is awful. Can we get a sniper please
obviously the best player on the ice last night was Gionta, honorable mentions to Gomez and Plekanec – if the Bruins can’t win 4 of the next 6 games then it may not be the worst thing, that will guarantee PC and Juilen get the AXE which they so richly deserve
go follow a team you actually enjoy watching. we’ll be so much better off w/out you. p.s. I could out hockey you in my sleep.
