BOSTON – By traveling to Lake Placid, N.Y, for two practices next week, the Bruins are planning on getting far away from Montreal between Game 3 and 4 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with Montreal.
It’s too bad their first line of Milan Lucic, David Krejci and Nathan Horton seemed to be playing far away from TD Garden through the first two periods of their 2-0 loss to the Canadiens in Game 1.
The Bruins are supposed to be a four-line force, but over the last two months of the regular season they were really just a one-line offense in the big games when the stakes were high. Barring a major resurrection of their second and third lines, the Bruins are only going to go as far as the so-called HuLK line can carry them, and tonight that was only to a shutout defeat.
“Well, I think when you look at the score sheet tonight, it’s pretty obvious that we need those guys to produce for us and they’re amongst the rest of the team that has to do a better job of that,” said head coach Claude Julien in a rare fit of brutal honesty about how his best players fared against the Habs. “But, you know, again, we’ll deal with those kind of things internally, but no doubt we have some players that we’d like to see be a little better offensively and give us a little bit more of an offensive punch to their game.”
It took until the third period for Milan Lucic to fire his first shot on Montreal goaltender Carey Price, and Horton carried just one shot on net on his ledger until late in the game. David Krejci took a goose egg in the shots department.
“I don’t think we were too cute. I think we playing hard on our sticks … we have to get some bodies in front of the goalie and get some shots through and I think other than that it was a good game. But you need some goals to score and that didn’t happen today,” said Krejci who took a different view of his line’s play than his coach.
For all the talk by the Bruins’ “Big Three” leading up to this series about just playing their game and getting pucks deep and punishing the Habs on the forecheck, it was all absent in Game 1 – except for some spurts of the third period. At this rate, we’ll have to call them the “Bruce Banner Line” and tab Hal Gill and P.K. Subban as the “Hulk Pair.” There was nothing ferocious about Krejci and his linemates when that’s all they should’ve been.
Only Horton, who was playing in his first NHL playoff game, had an excuse to be off his game. He could’ve been intimidated by the increased pace or even the roar of the crowd. After the game he claimed it didn’t affect him, which is too bad because it would’ve made a perfect excuse.
“I don’t think so. I think we played pretty hard and we had our chances,” said Horton, who sounded like he’d just lost a January game to Anaheim. “We just need to fix a few things. It’s going to be a long one and we all know that. They are a good team but it’s just Game One.”
The just Game One theory doesn’t cut it when you consider Lucic didn’t score in the last 10 regular-season games and Krejci scored once in the last 12. Horton was the only one with some semblance of a hot hand with two goals (one on the power play) in his last six outings. It’s time to flip the switch and all the top line provided was a flicker of electricity.
That Lucic owned up for his third-period miscue that led to Montreal’s second goal (“For myself I just got to make stronger plays,” he said), was a great sign of maturity. He also was a little more honest than his colleagues about his line’s play.
“Well I think it got better as the game got along. I think we probably could have done better like I talked about with getting in, fighting for a position in front of the net, creating screens and getting those rebounds where they did a pretty good job battling with us and trying to box us out,” said Lucic. “But for ourselves we felt like we had a pretty good game, obviously. But like I said we have to raise it another level.”
Lucic needs to show that just because he’s coming off his best all-around regular season and is fully ensconced as a first-line winger, he’s not going to lay off in the playoffs. He can’t play at anything less than that “other level” and neither can his linemates. This is no time for any of Boston’s first-liners to start channeling the ‘80s Edmonton Oilers without the blazing speed and god-like talent. They’re a first line in name only. For intents and purposes, they’re a “grind line” with oodles of talent.
There aren’t supposed to be shifts taken off in the playoffs. Krejci’s line went on hiatus for two periods. That trio has hit its limit for this series. It has to be full-speed ahead until one of the teams wins four games or they’re going to walk off into the sunset Bill Bixby style a lot earlier than they expected.

surprise, Marchand is not my favorite player. that said, I still think he is a good hockey player when he is not being stupid.
I am OK with our centers, just hope we get the wings going.
Marchand was our best player some shifts. Our worst some others. At least you knew he dressed for the game.
Rickinnh, you probably watched another game… that´s allright…
rickinnh,
Marchand was probably the best Bruin out there last night and yeah, he backed away from White because he knows White would have smashed him. Forget the fact that he’s 190…I’m sure Lucic will challenge him.
Truth be told. There are third lines better than our second line. Some people say Krecji isn’t a first line center. That would bump Bergy down to third,Kelly fourth and Campbell fifth. Pittsburgh’s third center lead them to a playoff win since one and two are gone. Could you imagine the B’s in that situation. Laughable.
I miss Savard…
Looch coasted after his 30th. He needs to remember how to play. Probably one of the worst games for Chara in a looong while. The worst part is, Bernard’s nicknames almost fit if he keeps playing like this. I won’t be too surprised if Ryder sits now that he did nothing (*gasp*) in the playoffs. I saw the wisdom in dressing a perpetual playoff performer, but if he is going to lay as big an egg as the rest of the team, bench his sorry glyding ass.
The HuLK line gets all the attention from the Habs best D because the second line does not produce. subtract Marchand and add a goal scorer to go with Bergy and Recchi. Marchand hugely overacheived this season, look at the poor shot quality on his chances last night. I’d rather see Seguin in that spot we know he can can skate and shoot the puck if nothing else. Marchand is not a second line wing period. and not to keep bashing on Marchand but did anyone else see him back down from Ryan White in front of the Habs net?
Raise your hand if you think THAT team could win the cup.
I’m not sure if the K L H line won any one on one battles. I was hopeful that Horton was going to be a beast in the playoffs but early returns aren’t promising.
You know their line was non-existent when you can remember more hustle plays from Shawn Thorton’s 5:06 TOI. Putrid.
I hate to say this but Krecji is playing just like he dod the whole season. I said that before and I will say this again: he´s not a #1 line center. Maybe a #2 line, that would be enough for him. Although I don´t think it was entirely his fall last night.
My impression and my main question after last night game was: Where is that freaking intensity that usally comes to playoffs games??? Where is it? With the exception of Brad Marchand and Shawn Thornton (maybe Paille), the rest of the team was playing an early season game againt Anaheim like Matt said.
It´s playoff time, please, do something!
I thought Bergeron was much better than Krejci last night. If the hulk lines poor play continues in game two then maybe flip/flop those two centers & try that.
That being said I realize that playoffs is not a good time to be switching lines around but if you’re ineffective for too long as is in a series then what have you got to loose except the series.
this town was ready for a lucic statue next to bobby’s.cmon 30 goals 5 empty net and the rest garbage.dont think he’s bad but definetly 2nd or 3rd line guy.oh yeah he gives the puck up alot
Well the team sure enough won’t win too many games if Lucic, Horton and Krejci aren’t playing hard. Lucic sometimes handles the puck really poorly and last night appeared to be one of those nights.
Shave the whole team wasn’t playing with Marchand’s fire-that kid was ready to play.
And honestly I think the Kelly, Peverly combo looked better with Seguin on the wing than Ryder, but then I am biased in that I think Ryder brings pretty much nothing to the team as long as he isn’t scoring.
As I have said sadly before the Bruins are a horse you cant handicap. It starts with Chirelli to Claude to the players. you lost the game because you did not SCORE. But rest assured Claude will spend today and Saturday preaching the good gospel of defense which should put the boys on the links in a short time. Please wake up!!
Chara is a non-thinker. Didnt think the stanchion was there, didnt think it was Max, didthink about his whereabouts on the ice, didnt think there were still people watching last night when he did his Homo Zednosaurus thing.
Homo Zednosaurus will run Price over tomorrow and say that he didnt think he was going to dismantle the guy…. On se comprend RD. Bravo les gars!! Lachez pas!
Marchand looked good out there. He could have scored a hat trick in the first period.
Then he took that dumb penalty?
Also, what was Chara thinking?
Tonight they were the KLuH line. Nobody had a clue they were in the playoffs. Sorry if that’s been used.
David Krejci is simply not a first line center. He is a very good second line center, but definitely not a #1.
There wasn’t much snow on the left side of the ice. He did a great impression of a human zamboni. Board adverisements were knocking him over. Not to be critical of course.
Outside of his first shift and the flying-through-the-air wrister, Lucic was terrible tonight. No skating, passes off the mark, the puck constantly in his feet, standing around in the zone, not much in the way of hits to force turnovers.
Krecji and Horton weren’t great either, but at one point I saw Lucic out there with Thornton and thought (hoped?) CJ had demoted him to the 4th line.
