I knew by midway through last night’s Game 1 Bruins loss at TD Garden that the comment section of this blog and my email inbox would be filled with a certain theme.
Based on the Bruins’ inability to solve Montreal goaltender, everyone was going to want rookie Tyler Seguin in the lineup for Game 2.
Sure enough, there it was in email form from reader Steve:
Got in a heated debate with my friends about the lineup last night. I think Seguin should have been in because he would have created more quality scoring chances than Chris Kelly would. I understand their roles are different, but for Christ’s sake, this kid is supposed to be a cornerstone of the franchise … and he’s fast. Not saying the reason they lost is because he didn’t play, but I also think he should 100 percent play Saturday.
A lot of you have echoed these sentiments in one way or another, and some have even taken to the airwaves to vent on this issue to the local radio hosts.
Basically, I look at the Seguin situation like this: he’s Michael Bishop, only with a legitimate chance to be a star player in his league in the not-so-distant future. Seguin is the back-up quarterback. He’s better than what you’re seeing out there on the ice because you haven’t seen him out there enough.
If you actually watch his game and how he plays during his shifts, he’s not ready to play regularly in the NHL regular season let alone the playoffs. As everyone knows, the playoffs are a different world. Everyone, I mean everyone, hits. Everyone gets hit. Everyone forechecks, digs in the corners and skates straight ahead. There’s no gliding, no circling and no looking at the referee. Seguin hit once all season, in Toronto, and then rested on that as his season highlight.
Even on the rare occasion he got out on a break with an odd-man rush or a 1-on-1, he did nothing but fire easy shots on goal or shoot into the defender’s shin pad. He doesn’t bring creativity or any signs of determination.
The Bruins need more traffic in front and better aggression when rebounds come loose. Seguin only plays as though he’s allergic to those two factors.
There’s no way you can trust Tyler Seguin in a playoff game, even if your alternatives are Chris Kelly, Michael Ryder and Daniel Paille. Those are veteran players with a track record of playing, and producing, in the playoffs. It’s not their fault that they’re being asked to do too much within the flawed structure of the team general manager Peter Chiarelli built. Kelly is probably better as a fourth-line center, Ryder should probably have been shipped to the Providence (AHL) farm club months ago and Paille has found his niche on the fourth line.
We can all agree Seguin’s season would’ve been better suited to playing with the P-Bruins. But CBA rules prevented that. He was here to get in some game experience, but, more importantly, be around men and learn what the life of a pro is like while Mark Recchi and guys like that are still around to do some teaching.
Unless you don’t watch Seguin play and only believe what Chiarelli and Claude Julien tell you — because they can’t say anything else without shooting themselves in the foot — about his improved play and better engagement, you know in your heart of hearts that if the Bruins were going to make a move to insert a different forward, rugged rookie Jordan Caron or veteran Trent Whitfield would be a better choice than Seguin.
And that’s just the way it is. Seguin is not the answer.

A freight train with Barishnakov moves.
I’m with you on the speed thing. Excited about Sauve and Spooner. Add Seguin, Kampfer can skate, Marchand is a little bastard. We’ll see if knight can adjust to the league – and I’ll stay in his corner if for nothing else – the ‘I told you so factor’. If you can find room for a guy with a release that quick, it can only help – no matter what line. I mean, look how frustrating the other end of it is. Marchand could have won Game 1 by himself if he could finish. He and Krecji drive me nuts that way.
Speaking of skating and speed. How much do you hate Subban?! He’s a friggin’ freight train.
I love how people want guys that hit. I want guys that will take a hit to make a play. That’s what defines toughness. Most goals win. Not most hits. I love the stat that shows over the regular season how Montreal out hit us. I guess if you can skate you can finnish your checks.
Yeah Bo it’s true. He doesn’t think he will be a top six or doesn’t hold out much hope. I like his hockey IQ and his compete level but you should dominate at the lower levels if you hope to be a top six. Knight isn’t going to make you say “who is that guy”. I think Spooner may have the hands to help down the road.
I just wish we would draft the odd guy like Darren Helm to fill the bottom six. You know the guy is faster than most guys in the best league. All you have to do now is teach him how to play. You can’t make a guy bigger of faster. These slower all around players aren’t getting it done. I’ve been saying since the ’70′s that we need speed. You can’t check what you can’t catch. The faster team usually wins. True story.
He laughed at Knight? Now that bursts a bubble.
P.S. I just banned myself from posting ever again for mentioning Kessel. Not joking either.
Something I don’t understand about some fans around here….some people have fallen in love with a certain type of player for some reason I can’t understand. Phil Kessel was run out of town for ot playing physical and staying out of the corners even though he can score 30 goals a season without a #1 center. Why can’t we get over Seguin being finesse player who could have tremendous offensive skill. Do the Bruns need to have 3 defensive minded checking lines instead of going with 2 lines focused on offense and 2 focused on defense?
Under Claudes system right now, if the first line doesn’t show up or Thomas isn’t Hasek the Bruins are in trouble for this series. I could be completely wrong, I can admit that, just something about game 1 really bothered me.
Lastly, Peverly should have been played at center with his speed and creativity, and because he has a tough time finishing.
Ryder looks lost to me half the time too.
Although I understand why they are sitting Seguin, I am of the opinion that if we lose again tonight, what harm is really going to be caused by letting Seguin skate? If the guys who are dressing can’t do it, at least put the kid out there and let him try to score. Speed is what can kill the Habs, and Seguin does have speed and a very nice shot.
And I am a huge Recchi fan-I think he is a great veteran to have on your team, but the man needs to retire or they need to take him off the second line and have him on 3rd line and PP duties. Or have him partially retire and play the last half of the season and play offs. But I think the last part of the season he has looked slow and behind the play.
But it is now the play offs and too late for fiddling, and honestly I would rather have Recchi on the second line with his nose for the net (and I hope they have plans to get his butt parked in front of price tonight). I am not a fan of Ryder but understand why he is dressing, but please, please please don’t let the Bruins resign him for another season even at a cheaper cap hit.
Matt what do youknow except you have that you get to watch practice.Ever play hockey? This kid may have been doing more if he wasn’t screwed with all year.Playing time is earned how about kelly and ryder,If he’s not ready to play well thats bruins fault.look at toi almost zero pp time. And chirelli and claude have both publicly bashed this kid and seguin has kept his mouth shut. But hey im sure campbell pallie are the answer.why not make the fourth line the first line.the bruins always play the game not to loose instead of plying the game to win.
Kudos to Matt for also laying blame on Chiarelli for this roster. Kelly over Arnott, I’m gonna be sick.
If he turns into a point a game player that would make him better than anyone we have now. There’s some guys on this team that have been here for some time and they will never produce 80 points. I told my brother who has coached at the higher levels that B’s fans are really excited about Knight. All he did was start laughing.
Speed kills, and skill is in shorter supply on the B’s than the ability to hit someone. Julien’s current game plan equals early golf. At least if Seguin plays and skates hard it creates space, even if he doesn’t hit or score.
This is hilarious. MK presents a water-tight argument and some people just can’t accept it. The kid looked lost and over-powered during the regular season. This is the PLAYOFFS!!
Tom, skating into defenseman trying to beat them 1 on 1 is exactly what Ryder did for the last few games he played at the end of the season. I don’t blame Ryder though, he is who he is. I’m frustrated with Claude because Seguin needs to be on the 2nd line with Bergeron and Marchand. It’s so obvious to me where he fits I can’t believe they do not do it.
1st line intact
Marchand – Bergy – Seguin
Peverly – Campbell – Ryder
Paille – Kelly – Recchi
I’m sorry but if Thornton can only be trusted to play 5 min then he needs to sit. Hes not on PK or PP
Best post ever.
Put S in the playoffs take out Kelly an absolute zero! Can we please stop preacing defense for once, lets try and score. If Timmy is the best in the leauge take advantage of it and rugh it up and let him do what they say he should do
Ryder at least won some battles and had some chances, not just losing pucks and skating into a defenseman and try to beat them one on one
Yeah I’d rather have Ryder out there. Free pass in the hopes he scores a goal while he does absolutely nothing the entire night. If I were Seguin and the Bruins used AHL players before I even played in a playoff game, I’d have my free agency date circled on my calendar.
Good one MK! I agree 100%
All the “pluggers” should be generating traffic. Like the rest of his game, or not, he’s the only one on this roster who can snipe it. We need less bulls eye hitters and more scorers!
…and ESPECIALLY against a Montreal or Buffalo-type, who sit back and wait for that one mistake. Seguin can’t bust through 5 guys, he will lose battles along the boards and he will cough up the puck. Nope. The upside isn’t worth the risk…maybe vs Tampa or Pittsburgh, but not a clogging team like the Habs.
Amen Matt.
Seguin has a great shot if given the time and the space but in the playoffs there is no time and there is no space.
I’ll take it one further. I’m very skeptical the kid can reach the heights as advertised, or even be a point per gamer. He’s young – so, I’ll back off from real criticism of his game, because none of us know what his game is or can be at this point. We’ll see, but as of now, I think more of Knight from the little we saw of him last spring than I do of Mr Seguin at this point. I can understand how an 18-19 year old would be hesitant to muck it up with some of these NHL monsters, but I can’t believe how wildly he’ll flip the puck into who knows where. He looks lost out there to me.. waiting, waiting, waiting for a puck to skoot loose from the wall so that he can one-time it. His strengths are supposed to be puck-handling and creativity. I’ve seen a deadly snapper, but not much else – not even the ability to beat a man one-on-one and get to the net. And by not much else, I mean NOT MUCH else.
ok Matt, ’nuff said, I won’t think about the Seguin situation while playoffs are under way, LOL
trent whitfield is chris kelley how has anyone else not mentioned this.. i might even think that at this point whitfield has more upside to his offensive game.. would you trade a 2nd round pick to get a trent whitfield.. nope, but chiarelli will .. for about two seasons now we have talked about all the asstes in picks and prospects that the bruins have and now that all the dust clears we have not much to show for it.. i love peverly’s abilities , kaberle has skill but was he really worth two draft picks and our legitimate #1 prospect.. i am so irritated with this system and most of all the belief that this system is so successful.. its time for a youth movement with a new coach .. and no seguin is not ready .. however i still think he should play a few games to “dip his toes into the playoff waters”
I disagree with you. Forget everything that was said and simply look at Montreal’s speed. Sequin can match their speed. The comment about everyone hits is usually accurate but aside from a few guys, did you see Montreal hitting last night? The only way to have experience in the playoffs to to play. I’m not saying sit down Lucic or Chara to make a spot for him. He can make as good an impact as Ryder, Kelly, or Paille did last night (which was little) with the upside that he’s a faster better player and maybe he’s one of those guys that can raise his game in a playoff atmosphere. We’ll never know until he gets out there. What do we have to lose?
He’s not ready. Enough said. Let’s circle boot him for his rookie year. The regular seasons over. He’s not playing.
Can’t disagree.
This made me LOL:
“Seguin hit once all season, in Toronto, and then rested on that as his season highlight.”
Well said, Matt
