Julien: Chara ‘courageous’ to even give playing for Bruins a shot tonight
BOSTON – Maybe this was the reverse Willis Reed.
Once upon a time, the New York center magically emerged from the Madison Square Garden tunnel to a rousing ovation and sparked the Knicks to victory.
Tonight, Zdeno Chara, unfortunately, was forced to do the opposite for the Bruins.
Boston’s captain, who was hospitalized last night due to dehydration, dressed and took the warm-up with his teammates prior to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with Montreal. When the lineup sheet was released, however, he was listed as a scratch and did not play in Boston’s 3-1 loss.
Montreal now leads the series, 2-0, with Game 3 and 4 set for next week in Montreal.
“Hopefully it’s going to be better,” said head coach Claude Julien about Chara’s condition. “He deserves so much credit for what he did tonight, coming to the rink and going out there for warm-up. He came off the ice and he was sweaty, he was dizzy, and there was no way in the world that we could’ve used him tonight and played him. Absolutely no way. The doctors told us the same thing. I talked to him. Even attempting to come was courageous on his part. But there was absolutely no way that he could’ve played tonight. It’s unfortunate, we missed him, but certainly he did the best he could to even try. To be honest with you, it wasn’t even close.”
When asked about Chara’s treatment over the next couple days before Monday’s Game 3, Julien said it’ll be mostly rest and fluids. But he also was asked if all Chara was suffering from was dehydration.
“Obviously that’s one of the situations and we’re not going to comment any further than that,” said Julien, alluding to a bigger reason for Chara’s condition.
The coach then went on a rant that makes you wonder if he’s checking his Twitter feed between periods. If he is, I hope he’s not following me.
“But still, I know that he’s been beat up on a little bit with you some of you media that think you know better than anybody else,” said Julien while channeling Richard Nixon. “But there was no way he could play. So anything else, it’s disappointing to see people making comments. You’re going to say ‘well, we don’t know the whole thing.’ Well I think if he could’ve played, he would’ve played tonight. And he tried his best and he couldn’t play. So it’s disappointing that people would even question this guy for what he is and what he’s done.”
Let’s just say that if there were any legitimate media members at this game tonight questioning Chara’s will or intentions, I didn’t meet them. It would be interesting if what’s ailing Chara now had something to do with what forced him to leave the bench area numerous times during the Bruins’ game March 31 at the Garden. The next day Chara didn’t practice, but Julien and the Bruins reported the captain had “no issues.”
Media conspiracies or not, the Bruins now have a 2-0 hole to dig out of with or without Chara.
“It should get us even more motivated. I mean to step up and fill a void he’s leaving, I mean he is a great [role-model] type of guy. Our captain,” said defenseman Dennis Seidenberg. ” [He] doesn’t suit up, it’s tough. But that gives a chance for other guys to step up and play bigger roles.”
Instead of winning one for Chara, the Bruins fell apart to complete the “reverse Willis Reed.” Maybe he’ll be able to come back and save them up in Montreal.

i agree with pi bruin same old same old every year iam sick of it i said long before the playoffs started this team wasn\t going any where .I don’t see much speed and skill on this team other then Marchand Paille and seguin the others are just a bunch of grinders oh Krejec is pretty good but lucic and horton can’t keep up with him
And to think he was one of our best players tonight. No wonder we don’t have any skill. No one would appreciate it anyways.
The Bruins’ defense is virtually non-existent without Z. Seidenberg, a #3/#4 d-man who is already being asked to play the #2 role, now has to lead a squad consisting of basically two bottom pairings and an utter liability in Ray Romano. To boot, every time Kabs gathers up the courage to shoot, he winds up and fakes the shot six times before finally feeding it to Price on a silver platter. Its not all his fault, as Boychuk and Hnidy belong on the bench/golf course and Chris Kelly has done everything in his power to steal the ‘Mr. Invisible’ moniker from Ryder. The HuLK line looks “KLuH-less” again, and obviously Claude&co. still have no ability to motivate their club. Can’t the Bruins EVER get their act together?
Apologies for being such a downer, but I’m feeling so out-of-sorts right now that I might actually take Gord Kluzak over Kaberle for game 3. What a bust.
How much longer will it take before the Bruins wake up and realize that the philosophy they are employing to put together a team is not going to work? I have been a fan since 1966 and the last 10 years have been the most frustrating that I have experienced.
A team full of grinders with average skating speed is not going to win the Stanley Cup. PERIOD. You need players who can skate and who can control the puck when it comes to them and get off a quick, accurate, powerful shot that has a chance to go in the net. All the Bruins have is a bunch of guys who muck along the boards who aren’t very good at controlling the puck and getting off an effective shot. Instead, the puck bounces off their sticks, they lose control and they take a wild swipe at it, resulting in a shot that is easily blocked by the defense, stopped by the goalie, or goes wide of the net. And it has been that way for at least 10 years. For goodness sake, get some guys that look like they know what to do with the puck on their stick in the offensive zone. Jeez!
Then, there’s the style of play. Guys, dump and chase all night long isn’t enough anymore. There has to be some semblance of a plan to create an organized attack to put the puck in the net. Tonight, I saw a Bruin get a rebound, and instead of shooting it, he intentionally put it behind the net so they could go back to cycling it around the boards, hoping the opponent’s defense falls asleep. It isnt working! Hasn’t worked for 10 years now. Particularly when the defense falls asleep 2 or 3 times a game and gives away the puck for an easy opposition goal.
The worst part of it is everyone else in the league know that all they have to do to beat the Bruins is take care of the puck when the Bruins shoot it into their zone, hang around waiting for a break in Boston’s zone, and you can win easily. EVERY hockey pundit I saw or read make a pick on this series picked Montreal. Every one. Everyone that knows anything about hockey except Bruins management knows they cannot win with this style and a team made up entirely of this type of player.
I know that people will say that Chara didn’t play and that made a difference, etc, but, even with him in the lineup on Thursday, they looked exactly like they did tonight. Hitting the road down 0-2, this year is over with, so we have to look toward 2011-12. Just a reminder, management, next year is the 40 year anniversary of the last Cup.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Assuming that is true, you could definitely call Bruin management insane.
I have a hard time believing the B’s can pull off two wins at Bell Centre.
I am not convinced Chara’s presence would have made a difference tonight, but it was clear his presence hurt the team.
Keeping my fingers crossed that he is ready to play come Monday.
I also can’t help but think coming back with Rask is a good idea and I really think they should put Seguin in-he isn’t great on defense but I think his speed is a plus and honestly I don’t think he could make it worse.
It’s ludicrous to think that Chara had the Philly flu. He’s sick because he’s sick. I’m sure it’s killing him. Obviously all you can do is win on Monday and head upstate for some fresh air and a couple of good sleeps. I won’t write the eulogy until I get a cadaver.
The Versus broadcast said it all. Each goal came when the D had full possession and turned the puck over. Ference. Boychuk. Seidenberg.
It’s clear the Bruins D isn’t the same without Chara, not even close. Z needs to be back if there’s any chance of a comeback in this series.
Just another excuse from the excuse machine.
