Obviously not enough members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association were watching the Bruins’ win over Tampa Bay March 3.

In that battle, Tampa Bay forward Martin St. Louis, last year’s Lady Byng Trophy winner for gentlemanly play, slew-footed Boston forward Mark Recchi. The Bruins veteran nearly crashed head first into the post.

The next day, Recchi said he had no hard feelings toward his old teammate. Nonetheless, you would think such an action might get observers of the game to think less of St. Louis’ sportsmanship.

St. Louis, however, today was announced as one of three finalists for this year’s Lady Byng. The others are Dallas’ Loui Eriksson and Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom. The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards show in Las Vegas in June.

Sometimes reputation trumps everything else.
