Claude says he was cool as a cucumber as contest continued

BOSTON — Bruins head coach Claude Julien has always had kind things to say about the fans of Boston, even as they’ve seemingly been calling for his head from the time he took over the bench in the Hub.

One day after the Bruins pulled out a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Montreal in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Canadiens, Julien today was asked about what it’s like to be behind the bench for such a grueling game as compared to all the observers that were on the edge of their seat throughout.

“To be honest with you, it’s a lot tougher to watch from a fan’s perspective than it is for a coach,” said Julien at TD Garden on his team’s day off. “As a coach, you feel you’ve still got control of the bench, you’ve still got control of your team. You’re just like the players. I was fine.

“I think the biggest thing you want to do in those situations is keep your team focused, keep them as calm as you can, try to make the right decisions and, again, I guess that element of control really helps you get away from that tension. … I’m glad I’m a coach in those situations than a fan.”
