Ryder adds to his repertoire with save, backcheck in Bruins’ win
BOSTON – There seems to be no lengths Michael Ryder won’t go to in order to win a hockey game once the playoffs start.
Ryder, a notoriously poor player in the regular season two years running now, did not score a goal or even register a point in tonight’s Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with Montreal two nights after his overtime goal tied the series at 2.
But in Boston’s 2-1 TD Garden victory, he still made a giant impact that went well beyond the three shots on net he recorded or the numerous scoring chances he and linemates Chris Kelly and Rich Peverely created.
In fact, other than goaltender Tim Thomas’ stop on Brian Gionta in the second overtime, Ryder made the most spectacular save of the night .
With 8:19 elapsed in the first period of a scoreless game, Ryder filled the blue paint for a moving Thomas and with his right glove slapped away a sure goal by Canadiens center Tomas Plekanec. Ryder said he’d played goaltender in ball hockey and even as a kid in ice hockey, but obviously he was never in a moment as big as the one he faced against the Habs.
“It was something like a 2-on-1, 3-on-1, and our D went over and they just made a pass in front and I knew Timmy was out of position and I tried blocking any way I can, and ended up getting the glove on it,” said Ryder.
Head coach Claude Julien has stuck with Ryder through all his struggles this season and last. He talked endlessly about how Ryder could be a contributor in the playoffs because the winger has a knack for big situations. There was none bigger than that save.
“This is something that just shows some desperation. He knew where he was, he knew what he had to do and he just desperately made the move. And kudos to him for doing that and certainly not something you practice but desperation makes you do a lot of things,” said the coach.
Thomas called Ryder’s save awesome and joked: “He actually probably knows what it’s like to be one of the old goalies without a mask more than I do.”
There was more to Ryder’s defensive game than even just that save. Late in regulation, he backchecked as hard as anyone ever has to get back and alter a Gionta shot on a 2-on-1. These are all aspects of Ryder’s game we rarely see in the regular season. The backchecking, the hitting, the goaltending … who knew he had so much in his bag of tricks? Well, other than Julien.
Ryder is relishing the opportunity his coach has given him.
“Yeah, I feel good out there. Confidence is back up and I think playing with ‘ Pevs’ and ‘Kels,’ we have chemistry together now,” said Ryder. “We’re getting more used to each other. This is definitely the time of year where you want to play well and try to do anything you can to make your team win.”
Doing anything, even playing the one position no one but the guy in the pads should have to play, is just what Ryder is doing now when it counts the most for the Bruins.

Ryder’s killing me man…
Tom, agree, Seidenburg has not been good. The best two defenseman have clearly been Chara and Ference. The worst two have clearly been Seidenburg and Kaberle
Best game of the series, not season, that is
Bleed B&G, you are right, Ryder has been so good this year, how could he ever ever receive criticism. The point is he sucked for 2 seasons and apparently could have been playing a lot harder. He is playing excellent hockey right now. Skating, shooting, diving in front of pucks. Where has this been for the last 2 seasons I ask you?
Also, I forgot, they played a perfect game, so they are completely above criticism. Actually, it was their best game of the season, but the point of this is to win the Cup. They need to continue to improve to have a sniff at that thing. But I guess you dont see any of that with your homer glasses on
I am definitely not a fan either. Good call there. But you are right, there are a couple of passengers on this team that need to get it up the way Ryder has…like the entire so-called first line. Oops! I made a critical comment. I must not be a fan
I will shut up when they win it all, to answer your question
Kevin, what is your man crush with Seidenberg? He has been flat out terrible.
Honestly I totally agree with Marchand but Bergeron has also been a beast and has won the really important face offs.
I think Seidenburg has played well-I like him paired with Chara better than Kaberle. I really think Ference is the guy who has cranked his game up and while his sign language cost him some money, I also think his goal and bird turned the B’s game around. There was just something about the team from that moment onward that has given me hope that they may be able to pull this series off.
I just hope the momentum carries over-and all the lines are clicking come Tuesday. I would still kind of like to Seguin get some ice time-just not sure who you would sit at this point to give it to him.
Oh and our PP still sucks. Honestly I don’t know what the coach is telling them to do on the PP but maybe it is time for a new PP coach.
What will it take to shut you up? Ryder has stood on his head and you still bitch…your not a fan of this team you are a critic cause if it were not Ryder you would find someone else….GO BRUINS GO…ALL OF EM.
I thought Ryder was good last night but to me the star of these playoffs has been Sidenberg and Marchand without them we would be gone in four straight.kaberle has been a waste of a good draft pick useless absoultely useless has caused more goals then montreal has.the big line has been a bust don’t be shocked if the habs win the next 2 i won’t be
Agold, that is spot on and that is why I can’t wait for him not to be on this team after this season. He is obviously beyond talented. He also obviously tries during the regular season about 4% of the time
If Ryder played with even a half the effort he has been putting out this series, during the regular season, he would not be the team whipping boy…
Seguin would have made that save though and 4 others, right fellas?
Hungus, the commercial should be Segzy saying “and now let’s go Ryder’s high energy play of the game.”
I heard/read many people saying that Ryder would turn is game up during the playoffs, and in the past he definitely has. For some reason this year I didn’t think it would happen and he has proved me wrong.
Hungus
Ryder’s save was awesome.
Last night was definitely a game where both goaltenders were on and the team that made the most mistakes and got lucky would win. Thomas and Price were both seeing the puck well although I am biased and bit when I say Thomas’ were more spectacular.
segzy would tell you that was the dunkin donuts high energy save of the game by a non goaltender.
