Final score: Bruins 4, Montreal 3 (OT)
Who needs a power play? Who needs a first line? Who needs a puck-moving defenseman playing up to his pay grade?
Not the 2010-11 Boston Bruins.
Despite all their blemishes, the Bruins gutted out an amazing 4-3 win over Montreal tonight in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at TD Garden. Boston will next face Philadelphia in the second round.
Nathan Horton, who also scored the game-winner in double overtime in Game 5, ripped a shot past Carey Price (who said it deflected off something) 5:43 into the extra session to earn the Bruins a win in a game they blew leads of 2-0 and 3-2 earlier.
Here’s a glance at the rest of the box score:
•Tim Thomas came up huge, with the only goals against coming on a shorthanded breakaway and two power play rockets. He finished with 34 saves.
•Chris Kelly scored his third goal of the series, while Mark Recchi and Johnny Boychuk also lit the lamp for Boston.
•The Bruins’ power play was 0-for-2 and finished the series 0-for-21.
•Milan Lucic set up Horton for the winning goal. It was Lucic’s second assist of the series — both on Horton game-winners — but the first line was still only Boston’s third-best line on the night.

Just because Marinaro handed no-name boston radio personality #1 & #2 their butts in a simulcast doesn’t make him a cheerleader. He’s constantly dissing the Canadiens all season because they aren’t being run the way he’d like them to be run. He also has a penchant for dishing inside lockeroom info on the Canadiens that they’d probably rather be kept private. Not a homer on Edward’s level by a mile.
He’s a classic know-nothing know it all with a couple hours a day on AM radio. Jack Edwards on the other hand has a significant role in being the Bruins TV play by play guy. Marinaro is probably banned from the habs broadcast booth.
Look up any Bruins fight on youtube where the Bruin clearly loses the fight. Edward’s homer call will have absolutely nothing to do with what’s going on.
Anyways, if I grew up listening to that idiot, I might like him too.
Bernard-
Talk about bias… let’s talk about Tony Marinaro for a second. He feeds the fan base what any fan base would want to hear: bloated, romanticized garbage about how their hockey team can do no wrong.
For the record, Jack Edwards is the man… but is out of his mind. He is always enthused over opposing teams’ goals, but reserves his clever wit for comments that support the Bruins. That’s what entertainment on a hometown station should be.
No one brought up the fact that Bergeron never hit Wislooski’s face with the stick. Also why did Boychuk get a boarding penalty? Bad calls both ways.
David,
I don’t know if you were trying to make Jack Edwards sound cool or something but those lines sound like something Woody from Toy Story would say if you pulled his string.
So, if we ignore is incredible bias…SURE! Jack is objective… lol
Suck on that Montreal Fakers! uhauhahuahuahua!
Wow what a great series I am so glad we won! Now it´s time to think about the Flyers…
RD,
Anti Bruins or not, you have been great to have on the blog and offer an outside perspective in a non-offensive way. Thanks for being here.
Also, Jack Edwards is great.
You just have to remember the analyst is Brickly, and Edwards gets paid to make really frickin’ weird analogies, and have catch phrases like “Lucic has got a burr under his saddle!” or “Thorton’s got a bee under his bonnet!”
I will say though, as the play by play announcer (not analyst, again that is Brick’s job) he is, as far as such a breed goes, relatively objective. That is to say he has a very noticeable bias and will try and explain away a number of bruins blemishes, but acknowledges some of them and defers to Brick.
That is how he is better than average.
Great game last night. Win or lose, at least it felt the TEAMS decided the game. Still not sure if Ryder deserved that hooking penalty, does anyone know how that was a hook?
Jack’s description of Pouliot’s hit on Boychuck was a ray of light for me. I do not hold the Bruins fans anything for thinking the way they’re thinking. It is however sad that propaganda still finds its nest in people’s brains nowadays……. I’m pretty sure there are MDW in Irak Georges? I can’t see why there would not be Donald……..What do you think doggy, c’mon wag the tail if you agree.
Oh and Brian,
Jack’s a disgrace to broadcasting. I’ve already been identified as objective so I think that settles it
He’s not really a play by play analyst. He’s a fan with a mic.
You guys give me too much credit. I’m an insane Habs fan and beating you guys would have been like a mini stanley cup for me. I’m also quite anti-Bruin. It’s not that I hate you guys, but I do have a certain dislike for Don Cherry, Cam Neely and of course Chara. I’m just an adult about it for the most part.
Down to the last second, I believed the habs were
going to pull something off. When you cheer for your team, the other team obviously takes on the role of the villain. I couldn’t see how coming back from 2 goals down, scoring with 2 mins to go was not some sort of destiny…
But, a 95 mile an hour slap shot changing directions through a screen has a way of crashing someone’s dreams don’t they?
Anyways, I have no idea who to cheer for between you guys and Philly. I mean seriously! You guys are like clones of each other right down to the giant nemesis defenseman.
I’ll be light-heartedly cheering for the Canucks. If Montreal can’t win it, maybe Vancouver can at least bring the cup back to Canada for the 1st time since 93 (back when we used to win in OT).
Later guys, savour that win.
Jay, you claim that Jack “poisons” our minds and distorts our view of how our team plays hockey….. How about your team poisoning your mind and distorting your view by diving. Maybe the Hab fanbase cries murder on every hit because with any contact your biggest “toughest” players flail to the ice or perhaps your players are smaller and have a higher tendency to get hurt. Just some “generalizations”.
RD you’re a class act. If only every fan regardless of teams was as objective as you, the hockey world would be a better place.
The game was great by all means. when we were up 2-0 and 2-1 we (the B’s) didn’t just sit in the neutral and defensive zones while flicking the puck forwards like montreal did in game 6. We fought hard and kept attacking. It was great that we won, great we came from 2-0, and it’s great that we are now done reading garbage from Habs fans while on our BRUINS blog.
BAD ASS,WOOP, BAD ASS, WOOP, BAD ASS .
Say what you want, the better team won.Goodbye HAB TROLLS !!!
Bring it Philly!!! We are so ready for you !!!
GO BRUINS GO !!! ALL OF EM.
If a Hab hits himself with his 9-iron on a backswing, does he dramatically fall down and wait for a penalty to be called?
Good riddance to all the trash-talkers and whiners on here from Montreal. It’s just a game, and you have a right to be passionate… but don’t call out this city or this fan base while you’re hiding comfortably behind your computer. It’s unwarranted and classless.
But to RD, if you’re reading this, thanks for being so objective on here buddy. You were a good sport and a class act, and showed you’re a true fan of the sport, not just one team.
To me, it seemed like Subban did the chin-flick, which in most countries is the same as the finger. I personally don’t think either one was a big deal, just a heat of the moment thing.
This series was really strange in a lot of respects. I can’t remember a time when one team was dominant 5v5, and the other team was just as dominant on the special teams. We’re all familiar with the Bruins powerplay failings, but, on the flip side, can anyone remember the last time Montrael scored an even strength goal?
It’s like Jack Sprat and his wife we’re scating around out there.
I didn’t catch what Subban did but it had to be pretty bad to match a bird.
I love physical hockey. I hate cheap stuff. Hitting a guy when he isn’t looking just sucks in my book so I hated the stanchion hit(both). The second hit on Halpern was a bit weird. Ferrence totally saw him coming and steadied his shoulder for it but he never moved an inch, Halpern just turned into him.
It was great game, a great finish and I think both teams can leave with their heads held high. Price and Subban are 2 rising stars and Horton outshone everyone tonight.
Tim Thomas won a tough series and made all the right saves at the right time. Some of his reflex pad saves were unreal. I mean, in OT, his won player kicked the puck into his net and he got a stick on it. Amazing!
I wish you guys luck in the rounds to come. I’m no hockey historian but I can’t remember a team advancing without scoring a power play goal. The bruins will desperately need to work on their special teams to get past bigger tougher teams.
Good luck Boston and see you next year.
Ok there’s a lot of garbage there, but seriously, Ferences shoulder to Halpern? You think that was dirty? He stood his ground and Halpern skated in to him. Come on man. And Subban’s goal celebration was just as disrespectful as Ferences.
Final thought of the year….
congrats to all the bruins fans on a good win. Good luck in the next series.
I had the unfortunate luck of being forced to watch the game
on NESN and jack Edwards is an embarrassment. He poisons your brain with his ignorance, habs fans hate hamerlik, but to his credit he did take a stick in the throat. I know realize that bruins fans have been force fed his word diarrhea for so long and that he’s the reason why you guys are so stupid.
After everything you did to us this year, the massacre-bloodbath 8-6 game, the hockey play, the bird, ferrences’ shoulder on halpern, the hit from behind on halpern, spacek yesterday, all the other dirty plays all year long, I was happy to see the habs being their usual respectful selves giving good handshakes to the bruins players…
Im sure your all thrilled, but your team still stinks, if you don’t believe me just go back and read all the posts from yesterday that all of you wrote.
But since it’s over now, congrats again, good luck against the other rats in the next round.
The refs did pretty good tonight, all they missed was subban highsticking krejci actually in his mouth and lucic playing a puck with his stick almost over his head.
Till 2012…God bless America.
What a nail bitter. I don’t think I have any nails left. Horton making his contract money worth while. Go Bruins Go!
Good Night!!!!!!!! yea boiii
