Well, the first verbal shot has been fired in the Bruins-Philadelphia Eastern Conference semifinal series that doesn’t open until Saturday afternoon.
Today diminutive winger Daniel Briere was asked about the fact that Boston plans to use revenge for last year’s historic Flyers comeback from 0-3 down as motivation in the upcoming best-of-seven series.
“I mean, it goes both ways. They are going to use it as motivation, but we know we are in their head and that is going to be with them this whole series, so we are using it to our advantage as well,” he said. “We know that we can always come back, so we want to get off to a better start this time around and not spot them a 3-game lead though.”
A more serious blogger might not joke that Briere is one of the few players that could fit in another’s head. But this blog is not above that.
Nonetheless, let the verbal shots fly even before the physical ones do. Another Bruins-Flyers series promises to be even better than last spring’s. But Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette wasn’t buying the notion that last year will have an impact on this year.
“Are they going to play harder than they did last year because they … I don’t think it’s possible. You’re playing for the Stanley Cup. If you’re not unloading your tanks and putting all your eggs in one basket when something is happening originally the first time …” he said. “They’ve got a heck of a good hockey team. They were good last year, they were good this year. They had a great season and they are moved on to the second round just like we did.
“I think that everything will be determined by these two teams on the ice, how they play in a seven-game series. The one who plays more effectively will be the team that moves on, not necessarily based on what somebody says in the paper or a result from last year. That stuff is all secondary to me anyway. That’s the way I perceive it.”

And still HAB TROLLS have not found the golf course…..anyway ,this is going to be the best our team could have hoped for. The second crack at Philly a REAL team that plays similar hockey except we have TIMMY !!! We took the HABS without a PP goal and I think thats just starting in time for this series.BRING IT ON !!!
GO BRUINS GO!!! ALL OF EM.

GR90-you are 100% right my friend – that third D pairing for the Flyers is where the B’s can do some serious damage
To the comment about Philly and Boston being the two dirtiest teams…clearly you don’t know hockey (aka Habs fan). Checking and playing physical isn’t being dirty.
The Bruins have more depth this year and are healthier. Philly’s achilles’ heel is their goaltending. Whether they beat the Bruins or not, it’s going to keep them from winning the Cup.
Flyers D looks scary on paper, but they gave up the 3rd most goals of any Eastern Playoff team and that didn’t look any better in round 1 (albeit w/o Pronger which is obviously huge). They transition well and have good offensive balance, but they aren’t all that strong defensively and have very questionable goaltending. They have a super deep forward corps but the B’s were also the best defensive team in the East (in terms of GA), I like the match up and the shot at redemption. It won’t be a cakewalk for either team.
As long as Tim $*$#^%ing Thomas doesn’t check Hartnell (winter classic style), we should be O.K.
Also: Tim $*$#^%ing Thomas baby!
Philly and Bruins match up well speed-wise. There is no player on the Flyers who is faster than Brian Gionta or Scott Gomez, and the Flyers are less of a counter attack-based team. Their bottom-six guys are the quickest, and they are a tight-checking bunch that give opposing defensemen fits but don’t score much. The B’s and Flyers are both incredibly proficient in 5-on-5 hockey, are relatively deep, and are physical but not the most mobile defensively- this is why they’re a good matchup.
In regards to last year, all you can say is that hockey is a game of inches… and the B’s lost some inches because of some poor individual performances and a lack of overall spine. Wideman’s unwarranted stick-dropping and falling down in game seven that gave Scott Hartnell a breakaway comes to mind. As does Danny Briere “splitting the defense” when two Bruins refused to simply put him on his ass in a 1-on-2 rush during game 4 (I believe that was the game it was… may have been 5). As does the sloppy offensive zone management that led to Gagne’s breakaway in game 4′s OT.
In the end, these two teams are very different from last year. If anything, I’m encouraged by the fact that Philly stumbled into the playoffs with a terrible showing their last 20 regular season games, and struggled to beat an undersized Sabres team that refused to lose battles. I’m also encouraged by the emergence of the third line as a fantastic two-way force with kelly and peverley, as well as Bergy and Marchand playing like their hair is on fire. If the first line can get back to its puck-possessing ways, get open looks and muck up the net in front of Boucher, the B’s will be a lot more formidable. Philly has a great top four with Pronger/Timmonen/Coburn/Carle, but who do they match up Meszaros and O’Donnell with? Exploiting that pairing will be key.
Do the B’s have enough speed to keep up? Montreal gave them enough trouble, Philly guys are just as fast and bigger.
For Pax to forgive means that Chara has made an apology. If so, then great. If Zedno’s message to Max was that it was a hockey play with an unfortunate outcome, then I would think that Max forgives publicly just so life can carry on. Zedno has already taken a big burden for what I would qualify as a brain fart.
I do not like Z but I have to admit that he did grant life to Lecavalier more than once. So, just for that he desserves respect imo. He remains the clumsiest Norris bearer in History for a lot of people though.
I think the key is whoever they match up with Richards needs to be a heads up hockey player-Richards plays a fine line between dirty and hard and while I wouldn’t call him the head hunter Cooke is-I do think he hits to injure whenever possible.
Also, not sure Krejci should be matched against Richards-although he does have two wingers who will step if need be-and last Krejci was awesome against the Flyers before he was injured-not sure what his stats look like this year though in the regular season games.
I think the one key is I think the Flyers have better coaching-I think coaching for the Flyers gets how to adjust in the the game and between games to make their team better. Julien actually seemed to indicate some willingness to adjust mid game in the Habs series so maybe he will match a little better with the Flyers, but I still think Julien will likely get outcoached even if our guys pull off the victory.
Funny how many Habs fans see checks as dirty. Must be because their players are so small they bounce of Marchand’s nose whenever they try it.
I suppose that’s why they built a diving team to play hockey.
I’m really excited for this series. It definitely promises to be physical, and outside of Carcillio and Richards, it should be a clean, hard fought affair.
Philly is certainly in the Bruins’ heads, just in a very different way than Briere thinks. I expect the flyers to be a little overwhelmed once the Bruins get going, as they definitely had Philly’s number during the regular season.
Also, I’m really hoping Carcillio hits his own teammates again, that would be a crowning achievement.
I actually think the demon to kill was game 7′s-I don’t think this team is going to be too worried about the Flyers as far as head games are concerned. Shoot half of them weren’t playing against the Flyers last year even if they were on the roster.
I think both teams made off season and mid season moves to improve their teams (well the Flyers still don’t have a high quality goalie).
I think this is more trash talk to hopefully get inside the Bruin’s player’s heads-not sure it will work.
Either way I like this match up as far as good hockey is concerned-both teams are physical, have deep benches and I think in general for the Bruins it is a good match up. I do think the Bruins have got to get Lucic, Horton and Krejci involved in the game-that line has all but been a ghost line.
Sounds like JPT believes in Karma. He wants it to catch up to Chara, but it caught up with the diving Habs Wednesday.
don’t worry, jpt. you can still root for the tampa bay diving team. habs have to be envious guy boucher got away. he’s got his guys diving better than the habs.
b’s have to be relieved to be playing another straight up, non-diving team.
That’s the same cliche the hab sportswriters printed and fans said before and during the series with the B’s. I expect some fireworks but not what many will anticipate. The hab fans will be making quilts and crocheting for the rest of the PO’s and through the summer.
I hope these 2 teams pound the snot out of each other and that there is hardly a player standing at the end. The 2 dirtiest teams facing off against each other. Welcome to wrestling on ice.
I can except that from Briere because he can back it up and has always been a Bruins killer with Buffalo as well. However the Flyers lost 3 of 4 in the regular season to Boston so they can’t be in Boston’s head.
Philly isn’t as deep without Carter and their scoring has been one line. I don’t see the Flyers shutting down the suddenly emerging Bruins 3rd line. Pronger didn’t shutdown Krejci last year in the playoffs last year nor this season he will fail again.
And don’t forget they got gagne back as we lost krejci.
This is a much better matchup for us, hopefully we wont need a defibulator like the habs series.
PS: Seidenberg is a beast.
So glad they are playing Philly! Can’t wait for this to start! The Flyers are tough, of course. Better Forwards and D-men than the Habs. People are saying that the B’s match up better with the Flyers. I’m still not exactly sure what that means…The Flyers have a better, deeper team. Are they not as fast as the Habs, maybe?
Definitely pumped at facing down another one of our demons. That being said, the Flyer’s are a talented hockey club…last year we were missing key pieces-so were they. Carter and Giroux (who returned later, correct me if I’m wrong) were injured.
This year both clubs appear to be relatively healthy, barring injuries that are not being release.
Looking forward to the series. Lets go Bruins!!!
Timmy won’t let mass murderers affect him like they did Miller. Sniff. Sniff. It’s amazing how the B’s are now the underdogs and the good guys. We can pound the hated Flyers and the masses will cheer. It’s go time.
