Report: Bruins’ Ference to have phone hearing over Halpern hit
BOSTON — Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference is scheduled to have a phone hearing with the NHL Thursday at 11 a.m. to discuss his hit on Montreal’s Jeff Halpern, according to the Twitter feed of TSN report Bob McKenzie.
Ference and Halpern collided and Ference’s shoulder might’ve made contact with Halpern’s head in the third period of tonight’s 4-3 Bruins overtime win in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series between the two rivals at the TD Garden.
Halpern went down in a heap and had to be helped off the ice. He returned later in the game.
Here’s a look at the hit:
This will be Ference’s second hearing of the playoffs, as he was fined $2,500 for his obscene gesture in Montreal after Game 4.

Yep, people don’t want to say it but beating the Bruins would have probably meant a lot stemming back from the Pacioretty hit. At any rate, if you’re gonna lose, better in overtime in game 7 than in game 4 a couple years back. Come to think of it, you guys are on a bit of a streak.
Price is a player. Boston had very clear memories of him being overwhelmed a couple years back. This kid is getting tougher mentally and has the physical tools to be the next great Montreal goalie. We’re not there yet but hell, the kid is spectacular.
Score some freaking power play goals and you guys are contenders. Also, more discipline. Special teams are killin ya!
@ RD
We will have to agree to disagree on this – you have Boston players to loathe (Chara, Lucic) we have our own list -enough said about that.
In the end I admit that it was a classic MTL-BOS series and Carey Price was ridiculously good in the 3rd period because that game would have been over a couple of times if not for him coming up huge.
By winning, it takes the sting out of some wounds MTL has given B’s fans over the years. Having said that, I have no doubt that this rivalry just keeps getting better.
Hey Brian,
I agree, leading in, Halpern looks towards Ferrence but he’s clearly not looking at him when they collide. It’s a very weird play.
I’ve been pretty clear that I blame Halpern for this one and that Ferrence shouldn’t be suspended. I’m just trying to get the point home that the impact was pretty hard and I don’t think there was any diving or faking involved.
Sure he came back 6 minutes later but I’m sure his head was hurting pretty bad.
I doubt he was acting. Hell, he took the stanchion hit to the face and his head snapped up like he was angry about it.
He got clocked with his head pointing the wrong way on the Ferrence hit. It probably takes a few minutes to regain your faculties or recover from being winded. In the back room he probably dunked his head in ice/ smelling salts, you name it and rushed back out. I also doubt he was 100% clear minded when he went back out on the ice. That was a pretty rough match for Halpern.
There were plenty of examples of plays where players dove. The one that comes to mind was Subban falling when Krecji’s stick touched his waist next to price. There’s no way in hell I unclude that one with any notion of diving or faking. Not that player, not that play.
Game 7, 3rd period, overtime looming…guys come back out before they are ready because they feel it’s their duty to the team, the fans etc etc.
Let me make this clear, RD, not once did I say Halpern took a dive, I said he FAKED being hurt, which he did and the whole ten minute show getting off the ice was pure prima donna crap. He had his bell rung and because it worked in the past he tried to sell it as if he was seriously injured. Hoping for another 5 minute major call or game misconduct.
Also you are confusing me with other posts here, i’m not defending AF here, i’m just pointing out that ridiculous act job by Halpern. It was a tough hit, probrably a 2 minute roughing call. But you insult the game by miraculously coming back 6 minutes after that acting job.
