It’s hard to tell if he’s trying to butter up Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas or psyche up his own goaltender Dwayne Roloson prior to the Boston-Tampa Bay Eastern Conference final series.
But today Lightning coach Guy Boucher had some overly complimentary words for Thomas after his team practiced.
The Lightning bench boss, who holds a degree in Sports Psychology, got his team back on the ice at the St. Pete Times Forum today after a couple days off in the aftermath of Tampa Bay’s sweep of Washington. Several times in his post-practice media briefing, Boucher referred to the Lightning’s ability to solve Thomas as the No. 1 key to his team emerging victorious from the best-of-seven series that will start later this week.
“I think in the end I think we’ve got the same enigma – nobody can beat this guy,” he said. “So we’re no different. It’s going to be extremely difficult and he’s shown that he was the best throughout the regular season and now in the playoffs he’s shown the same. So there’s consistency there. So I don’t plan on him giving us any freebies whatsoever and I think it’s going to be low-scoring games.”
Boucher and his coaching staff have been dissecting the video to see if they can find Thomas’ Achilles heel. At least publicly, the coach says he’s having a hard time finding the weakness.
“There’s clichés. But I think every goaltender’s got his strengths and his weaknesses. He doesn’t have many weaknesses,” he said. “But he’s got a certain look. He’s got his own look and he’s built his own system of playing. And it’s certainly served him very well. I guess it’s making everybody scratch their heads about what to do, including myself.
“They’ve had success because the team plays well defensively, but also because he’s outstanding too. I think it’s very well-documented. We’re not bringing up anything that nobody knows. But it is a major worry. It is something that nobody could do in the first rounds and we’re going to be in the same boat as everybody.”
Of course, the Lightning aren’t wanting for goaltending with Roloson between the pipes. He leads all playoff goaltenders with a 2.01 goals-against average and .941 save percentage. Thomas’ GAA stands at 2.03 and his save percentage is .937.
Boucher’s obviously not worried about putting Thomas on too high a pedestal that his shooters get put at a mental disadvantage.
“We could play amazing and he could stone us,” the coach gushed. “We expect him to be what he is: outstanding.”
So in Boucher’s eyes, Thomas a standard to live up to as high as the degree of difficulty the Lightning’s shooters are going to have to overcome.

Speed is the key. Can Boston keep up with Tampa’s pace? Maybe the sweep will let the Bruins regain their energy for this series.
Roloson spent his career playing for bad teams. It turns out he’s a half decent goalie. Thomas is a known commodity and will likely win the vezina this year.
I don’t think Boucher will get in Thomas’ head. It will be Julien and the Bruins fans that will risk getting in his head. Remember the reaction after games 1 and 2 in boston in the Montreal series? People were calling on Rask… Julien will need to show confidence in Thomas even if the bolts light him up a couple times.
Study all the tape you want, the only weak spot Thomas has is rebound control. Very often he’ll just kick a puck into the slot but the Bruins’ defense has been good to clear it.
I wouldn’t be opposed to four consecutive Thomas shutouts either.
Maybe Boucher isn’t really playing mind games with the Bs, he’s getting his own players in the right mindset. Be ready for low scoring games, and don’t get frustrated if it takes time to break through Thomas. Then when the Bolts do score 1 or 2, they’ll be flying high and thinking they’ve done something great. It’s a good tactic to keep your own team focused, loose and not aggrivated if the goals don’t come right away.
Either way, I don’t put much into trends come playoff time. Either team can drop 6 goals on the other in Game 1. Or it could be a 1-0 OT game. Who knows…
i got a bad feeling about this series. reminds me of carolina two years ago.
remember how the b’s swept the habs, whipped the canes in the first game and then lost 3 straight?
Low far side shots is becoming trendier and trendier. It works. It tells you how the game has tightened up like unreal.
Also, Robg, your wisdom wins me!
Watch for nifty things while changing on the fly from the Bolts too. They have the fast break in their agenda. They have the players to finish the job too.
Also shorthanded goals could be a factor in favor of the Bolts..????or may be not???
Thomas is poised. Boucher is scary
Man, Guy is really trying some mind games here. He knows that Timmy is at his best when he gets no respect and is forgotten about; like he had been for most of his career including last season to this season. You have to give him credit for at least trying and It’s not like he’s saying stuff that isn’t 100% true, but we all know what this is all about.
I think we’ll see quite a few fake shots from the dots and just below to draw TT out to cut down the angle and then try to skate around to shoot or pass on the open net. We’ve seen Lecavalier succeed at doing it this season and the donkey Olczyk was pontificating on how it should be done, or at least tried during the last series as well. Also, low far side shots to create rebounds for the net drivers.
People need to stop being so negative
I think Kells and Soup have proven they have another gear here in the post season and I’m looking for them to keep the energy they’ve shown consistent in this series. Its the conference finals afterall! I hope that Bergy doesn’t push himself to come back before he’s ready, he has many more post-seasons ahead of him. It would be great to see guys step up big in this series and have Bergy back for the cup finals series.
I wonder a little bit if the almost week between the end of the last series and the beginning of the Boston/Tampa series will reek some havoc on the goaltending rhythm. It is pretty clear Thomas was in the zone with the Flyers and Roloson was in the zone for the Tampa games. Will that week off make them better or push them out of the zone where they have to build back up again.
Probably the one thing I don’t like about the long breaks between winning one series and starting another.
As a Bruins fan, I hope tht Boucher is right. I hope that in one post season the Bruins can beat two Bouchers LOL!
As a hockey fan, I can see Boucher’s point. Goalies’ styles is how pure goal scorers figure them out. Thomas’ s type has been echoed time and time again by shooters that they are not sure what he is going to do when they get closer to the net because they couldn’t figure out what Thomas is going to do.
Roloson is going to come crashing back to earth starting this weekend. The dream is over.
I agree Bergeron being out gives Tampa a huge leg up-it makes match ups a lot easier for Tampa.
I think the fact that Thomas is unorthodox in his style makes him hard to solve though. He is aggressive and quick-and I don’t think it is easy to get in his head.
Good thing the Bruins have shown that they are not suceptible to mind games. Bergeron might be the Achilles heel of this team
