BOSTON — The difference between a tied game and a two-goal Bruins lead was as miniscule as could be in tonight’s second period.
With the Bruins up, 3-2, goaltender Tim Thomas stopped a Ryan Malone breakaway by not falling for a faked slapper and holding his ground against a backhander. Seconds later, Tyler Seguin went down on a 2-on-1 and scored his second goal of the night.
The Lightning never caught the Bruins the rest of the night in a wild, 6-5, Boston victory in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final at the TD Garden.
While it’s hard to focus too much on a save in a game featuring 11 goals, that play might’ve turned the game in Boston’s favor.
“He got the pass up the middle,” explained Thomas about Malone after he finished the night with 36 saves. “I mean, basically, I saw a guy coming in on a breakaway with the puck. I was determined at that point to not let them score. I did have time to realize that it was Malone. He wound up for a fake slap shot but I had to be on my toes because I saw him beat [Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre] Fleury with it. But he didn’t take it and when he got in on me I was just trying to stay with him and get any piece of my body I could on the puck.”
While plenty of pucks passed Thomas, he racked up even more amazing saves on a night the Bruins’ defense corps was skating in quick sand. He stopped Vinny Lecavalier point-blank in the third period and snuffed out 1-on-1 chances by Nate Thompson and Martin St. Louis as well over the course of the night.
One puck he didn’t stop was stuffed in by Dominic Moore to cut the lead to 6-5 with 6:45 left in regulation. Moments before, Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid collided with Thomas and knocked the goaltender’s mask off. The officials counted the goal, despite the rule that says play stops when a goaltender is mask-less.
“Well they gave me the right explanation,” said head coach Claude Julien. “You are supposed to blow the whistle when the goalie’s mask comes off but if they are in the scoring position the referees have the discretion to let it go. And they felt they were in the scoring position and so they didn’t blow the whistle. For me it was understanding it, because when you look back at the replay the helmet is off for a while. And I was hoping they would have blown it earlier, but it was the right call.”
Thomas probably has nightmares about losing 11-goal games. This one turned out to be a dream come true, as it evened the series at one game apiece. It’s games like this that make Thomas glad he’s been through the battles over the last several years.
“I think experience helps in those situations. Just this year we were in a few games, I think we beat Philly, 7-5, or something like that, and we had a similar game against Montreal,” said Thomas. “Experience helps you to learn that, each time a goal goes in, you’ve just got to put it behind you. You’ve got to start focusing on the next one. If you start thinking about the goals that just went in, it’s going to lead to other goals, and it’s not going to be helpful.
“With our big second period there, I knew we had a big lead going into the third period, and the plan wasn’t to let them get close at all. But when it gets 6-4 and 6-5, when you’re a younger goaltender, it might be hard for you to keep your focus. But I’ve been through enough situations similar to that. I was just trying to keep my focus, and when it got 6-5, do everything I possibly could to keep it from becoming 6-6.”
He kept it 6-5. And he kept his mask on the rest of the night as well.

Yeah I remember the net going off and commenting that it looking like Tampa did it intentionally-no call and no mention by the VS crew.
I also think our defense has been weak and out of rhythm this series. One guy has a fantastic night but totally stinks the next (Boychuk looked pretty good game 1, but he was awful game 2-kaberle was horrendous game 1 but was passable game 2, Chara also didn’t seem all that on this series.
But if the defense is playing weak, then it is tough to stop all the goals. I actually think Thomas has always been prone to letting in the soft ones but making the big saves-it’s almost like he gets an adrenaline kick for the big ones that keeps him focused, but the soft ones he isn’t so aggressive with or something. He also seems to be prone to 5 hole goals.
But he has stolen a couple of games, and he kept the Bruins in the game last night, so I won’t fault him too much.
The irony here is that Rolly the Goalie has made a career of knocking his own mask off when his team is in trouble. He likes to push the net of too as do his defense. They had a really blatant one in the first period but no call.
glad to see the b’s crack rolaids. first playoff game where bolts scored first and then lost.
Johnny Walker’s a hockey fan. Maybe we could put Brady’s headset inside Timmy’s mask. Then have someone up top tell him “Tim you’re freezing air. The pucks on the other side. Over.”
classic Nifty, just classic, of course my Doctor is a Tukka fan so I self-prescribe to John Walker during TT time
My doctor says stay away from fatty foods and watching Tim Thomas play. I said one of those is impossible. She gave me a little bottle of nitro that should last me through June. Bless her heart.
Thank you for covering the mask/TB goal 5 issue! VS.’ coverage was so lame, they didn’t make any mention of it. Our local “reporters” were too busy creaming over Seguin.
Thomas definately would have liked to have a couple of the goals back last night but he still did what all the greats do, he shut the door when the game was on the line.
Yeah, he is making spectacular saves and letting in softies. It is weird. My guess is he irons it out and dominates the rest of the series.
Give Tampa some credit here. They aren’t playing the local high school JV team. With that said, I bet TT wishes he had the clark goal and the lecavalier 5 hole back.
The defense has been terrible, lots of carelessness with the puck but that Lecavalier goal was god awful – 30 footer with no screen in the 5 hole. But the save on Malone was spectacular….
The defense in front of him has been awful. He needs more help from them
Tough to complain about TT but so far in two games he’s let in more soft goals than the entire Philly series.
I’m expecting TT to get back into form within these next couple of games, I.E.: no more extra days off. He always plays better with steady, consistent work.
Not that he didn’t make some great stops last night, but he let in a couple that he normally stops and he really didn’t have the greatest rebound control. It would help if the team in front of him played their normal defensive style too. They’ll all get there and this W was big for sure.
He is still letting in far too many soft goals. He is making amazing saves, but the soft goals are really bad right now. At least two real softies last night
Update: In international hockey like the Olympics the play is blown dead when the goalie’s mask comes off regardless of who has possession.
In spite of the 5 goals-I think Thomas had a very good game.
I think Tampa has huge shooting talent-scary huge with speed-and Thomas is holding his own, but I wish the defense would do a better job.
I think what bothers me about the non whistle when thomas lost his mast was that McQuaid had some help running into Thomas-McQuaid didn’t just leap on his goalie for the fun of it, he was pushed into his goalie.
Very scary moment though-thomas could have been pretty scary, seriously injured-whether the refs were following the rule or not-that kind of scrum in front of the net with a helmetless goalie is the stuff for highlight reels but very dangerous.
I was wrong about the rules…..Rule 9.5 is :
When a goalkeeper has lost his helmet and/or face mask and his team has possession of the puck, the play shall be stopped immediately to allow the goalkeeper the opportunity to regain his helmet and/or face mask. When the opposing team has possession of the puck, play shall only be stopped if there is no immediate and impending scoring opportunity. This stoppage of play must be made by the Referee.
So it appears that the refs made the right call by the rulebook. As usual it’s the rule I don’t like and not the enforcement of it.
Guy has to play better. What is his deal? He was amazing on breakaways but bad on shots from 45 feet. He steps up and this series is over.
