BOSTON — Never mind his willingness to own up to his mistakes.
Milan Lucic is even willing to add to the list of things he did wrong leading up to Tampa Bay’s game-winning goal in yesterday’s Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final in Tampa.
Asked today on an off day at the TD Garden before tomorrow night’s Game 5 what went wrong when he coughed the puck up to Ryan Malone at the Boston blue line before Simon Gagne put the Lightning ahead early in the third period, Lucic rewound the play even farther.
“Even before that, with [Victor] Hedman having that chance. As a winger you need to stop in my position, and I didn’t do that,” said Lucic about a play that resulted in a Tomas Kaberle blocked shot. “But then I got the puck, I saw two guys open in the neutral zone. And I didn’t see Malone, and obviously it was costly. Again, it was almost like I was trying too hard to make up for my mistake and if I had just stopped in front in my position, I wouldn’t have left a 2-on-1 right in front of the net. That was basically it.
“Mistakes happen. Games are won and lost by little mistakes like that. And I don’t want to think too much about it, I just want to make sure I’m ready to play going into next game so the same thing doesn’t happen.”
Lucic is hoping his short memory proves as effective as his accountability. And that his teammates take the same approach after squandering a 3-0 lead in Game 4.
“I don’t think you can afford to look back,” he said. “If you dwell on the loss, if you focus on the negatives and all that type of stuff, obviously you need to go over them and learn from them. But if you dwell on it and let it bring you down, it’s slowly going to make things worse. In the playoffs, it’s not time to start second-guessing yourself or anything like that.”

If Lucic is hurt they should consider lowering his minutes/taking him off the PP.
matt k hes hurt? He shouldn’t be on the first line then. Why does this guy get a pass from you?H only has 30 goals because 5 are open nets and the rest he benefits from kreji and horton.put him on 3rd line where he belongs. This town has elevated this guy far beyond where he belongs. But then again you go with the flow
Enough excuses. If he is too hurt to play then sit down. If he can play, then shut up with the injuries. Everyone is injured.
Actually the team has said he is hurt. He has something wrong with his foot.
Although he still hasn’t been playing great-I think he is more tight and tentative in general.
Yeah, Luc has really confused me this post season.. He seems to have really psyched himself out and can’t overcome his own frustration. Maybe being the top goal scorer on a team with so much talent makes him unsure of his role. Been very strange- I was convinced he was hurt, but we keep hearing that’s not the case. Whatever the problem is, Luc needs to forget expectations and just play. Relax, and play your game- we all know what he can contribute, Luc is his own worst enemy right now. It would be nice to see him skate with Bergie.. Calm down a bit and do his thing.
Spencer-
It’s pretty well understood he is injured right now. He also led the team in hits. Hard to “call him out” for not being physical.
MK
WHY DOES HE NOT PLAY PHYSICAL ANYMORE? im talking actually skating full speed and finishing checks, making sure nobody touches krejci, initiating contact after the whistle… Matt, does anyone ever ask him/call him out about his lack of physicality? His rookie year, he wouldve killed someone for hitting his center the way krejci was.
I think as a team they went up 3 goals and stopped playing to win. YOu can’t do that-the breakdown in the Flyers game last year should have taught them that, but it has happened enough times this year that they don’t appear to have figured it out.
Lucic definitely gift wrapped that puck for Malone, but he wasn’t the only player in the last 2/3rds of that game who needed to step it up.
Hopefully tomorrow night we see the game 3 team and not the game 1 or game 4 team.
Lucic has 2 goals and 4 assists in 15 playoff games. That is just not enough from your 1st line LW. In fairness he was involved in 2 very important goals, and there is time for Milan to turn it around.
