VANCOUVER — Dan Cleary of Detroit already beat him to the claim of first Newfoundlander to win the Stanley Cup.
That doesn’t mean Michael Ryder would mind being second.
The Bruins winger will start his quest to capture the Cup tonight in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at the Rogers Arena against Vancouver. Ryder says he feels the support of his entire province behind him as he enters the biggest series of his life.
“I had a buddy send me a picture today of a Ryder jersey walking around back home. He said he almost went off the road,” explained the forward yesterday.
Before you wonder if maybe the rarity of a Ryder jersey shows he doesn’t always have the province at his back, Ryder explained the friend nearly drove off the road because he took the picture while driving, not because of shock.
The province should be rooting for Ryder because if he wins, he’ll bring the Cup home to St. John’s, Newfoundland.
“Definitely, it’d be nice. Especially back home all the support that they’ve shown for me,” said Ryder, who represents his province along with Cleary, Adam Pardy, Ryan Clowe and Teddy Purcell among NHLers.
“Newfoundlanders are always proud of other guys, other Newfoundlanders doing well. It’d nice. I’d like to reward them by bringing it home and enjoying it.”
The Bruins will need an offensive contribution from Ryder to get the job done against the Canucks. So far he’s racked up five goals and 11 points in 18 postseason games.
“[I feel] good. Excited. You always dream about this,” said Ryder. “If you can’t get excited, there’s definitely something wrong. Hopefully I got to calm my emotions down and play hockey.”

See. I told you it was confusing.
@PatrickD…ha! last time i try to correct someone on the forum… made me laugh out loud!
I wouldn’t say ALL of Newfoundland will be cheering for the Bruins but some of them will because of Ryder.
Newfoundland is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Pack your bags and go see it at some point in your lifetime.
This guy can come up big when needed,I hope this series is one of those times.I got a Ryder jersey and will be wearing it in MONTREAL all day… to see if I survive check here tomorrow….BTW Ryder is not from St John’s but Bonavista.
GO BRUINS GO!!! ALL OF EM.
@wespaul not to be too much a geek about it but the city in New Brunswick is Saint John. First word spelled out.
canada should be rooting for the b’s as they have way more canadians on the team.
the cup would visit every province except new brunswick if they let trent whitfield take it to saskatchewan. i know, trent whitfield.
@the other nifty…not to call you out on the forum but i’ve had to clarify that my hometown is St. John’s, Newfoundland and not St. John, New Brunswick, a few times over the year. it’s that damn “s” that gets em everytime.
I really hope St.John’s has a party this summer. I remember getting confused in geography because there’s two St. Johns on the east coast. Soon I found out that there’s two Roughriders out of eight teams.
I guess if it’s a great name. What the heck. Someone suggested naming the new Winnipeg franchise the Roughriders. Canadians may not be original with names but they can be funny about it.
“If you can’t get excited, there’s definitely something wrong. Hopefully I got to calm my emotions down and play hockey.”
So he’s hoping there is nothing wrong with him and he gets excited? God bless him. I hope so too!
