Bruins’ Horton headed to hospital, moving extremities
BOSTON — Bruins forward Nathan Horton has been transported to Mass. General Hospital and is moving all his extremities, the Bruins announced.
Horton was injured on a shot to the head by Vancouver’s Aaron Rome during the first period of Game 3 of theĀ Stanley Cup Final tonight at the TD Garden. He left the ice on a stretcher after he was attended to by the Bruins’ medical staff.
Rome was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct.
Hey John. Those smashers didn’t connect so we wont know what would have happened. Still, it’s not really about defending at that point because you are launching yourself out of the play. That is all about hurting the other player. I’m glad they didn’t connect, sad Horton got hit.
Thank you RD for clearing up the rule. Still too furious to really comment on it, but I’ve got to say with what we’ve now seen from Vignault I wouldn’t be suprised if he told his AHL defense pair to take one of Boston’s big line out. All you Canucks and Montreal fans, from one Canadian to another, you all know you’re wrong you know what a dirty hit looks like, so why antagonize in another teams blog?
RD, I believe you are referring to Boychuck and McQuaid. Big difference is, they weren’t from the backside 15 minutes after the Canucks released the puck. If they had connected, would have been 2 min charging at most. 2 min charging penalty not the same as what rome did. Rome could have been called for about 3 different penalties, all majors.
You surprise me TCL. I find this is a perfect example of rule 48.
-Shoulder to head
-Late
-Blind side
-feet left ground
-player seriously injured
I’m expecting a minimum of 2 games but if it were up to me, it would be longer.
What I DIDN’T like was seeing a couple Bruins take flying leaps at Canucks at the blue line trying to reciprocate. You can’t talk out of both sides of your mouth. If you SAY it doesn’t belong in the game, don’t even try to land those hits.
Yeah I think the Canucks would take the trade of Horton for Rome any day. Horton’s skills are far more valuable to the Bruins than Rome’s when the bench for their defensemen is still two good men deep.
All I can say is that I hope the Bruins use this as a locker room motivator to dig deep and put pucks in the net.
I think the hit was pretty close to what the league is trying to get rid of, but I won’t be shocked if there isn’t a suspension either-there is no consistency or predictability in the NHL.
Wishing Horton well-that hit looked awful and seeing him on the ice was even worse. I think he is looking at a pretty severe concussion though-anyone know his concussion history?
Knowing the NHL I will be amazed if Rome is suspended. He should be, but this league is utterly inconsistent when it comes to punishment. Even if Rome is suspended, Vancouver loses Rome and Boston loses Horton. Nice trade. If the league wants t stop the cheap shots, make the team with the suspended player play with a short bench until the suspension is over.
1. Rome is desserving of missing the rest of the p/0.
2. By regular season standards it would fetch as many as 10 but more likely 5.
3. Let’s focus on the positive: The BRUINS’ DRESSING ROOM IS BACK.
I was watching the HNIC feed and they were pretty clear it was a late blind side hit.
Pierre McGuire described it as much within seconds of the hit on the versus hit. I think the thing I hear too often is that the guy was ‘admiring’ his pass.
Who cares?
What right does that give you to catch a guy right on the chin?
Paccioretty is a good kid John. The worst thing he ever did was shove Chara out of the way after a game winner in overtime. When you consider the whole fingergate thing, this is pretty small potatoes. The truth is that he’s a young kid that makes mistakes but didn’t deserve the hand he was dealt.
Hopefully the prognosis on Horton will be better than Max’s or Savard for that matter.
Thanks for the frank candor RD. I was disgusted when the fools on Versus tried to argue it wasn’t blindside.
I think, no matter the allegiance, no one wants to see that happen to anyone.
Unfortunately, its up to Murphy to decide this one. Shanahan doesnt take over til next year.
I did think it was very classy of Pax to offer his support via twitter, tho.
George, that’s very possible. He did briefly lose consciousness which is an indicator that this could be worse than a grade 1 concussion.
We don’t need to bring up past incidents. All head shots are dangerous and this one was pretty disgusting. He had dished the puck, it was a blind side, it was shoulder to head and Rome left his feet. He should be done for the playoffs.
I’m not trolling on this one. Head shots suck no matter which player is involved. We’re talking about people’s health and livelyhood. Sure, one day the guy is a bruin, the next he’s a Canuck. What team he plays for isn’t as important as the fact that he’s a young man that could have been killed on the play. He might have a family, kids etc and he’s lucky to be paid to play a kids game. He doesn’t need to have his head ripped off like that.
I have been adamantly opposed to headshots for a long time and I hope this incident, and the departure of Colin Campbell will help reign in this type of hockey.
Thanks you Steamer. As a devout Bruins fan and an all around lover of hockey, its great to see a post like yours amid all this bigotry.
Very classy post Steamer. I appreciate that. (except for the Thornton part, he is a gemer, who abides by the ‘code’)
Either way, very classy Steamer
My thoughts are with Horton. As a hockey fan and canuck fan that was obviously a late hit. There is nothing that can condone that type of play. Unfortunatley, this type of play will continue regardless of whatever suspension is handed down. Welcome back to the Series Bruins fans.
As a hockey fan tonight what i wish both teams would stop is all the blatant slashing and two handers. It makes hockey look like a free for all and both teams are doing it. I guess thats how Boston plays cause in the WCF there was not much of this thuggery.
Game on Boston… Enjoy your days…. see you soon.. BTW Thornton is a idiot
Agreed. Possibly dirtier than the Savvy play. Not as blindside, but way later. Rome legit deserves a 20-25+ game suspension. Of course that wont happen, because of the people in the NHL office who think that Twilight: NHL is good tv, but that was the cheapest of cheap shots
I also felt the post was long enough but feel the need to mention that Vigneault’s comments on the hit were that Horton was pass watching…. Thankfully one of the guys at Puck Daddy managed to count that he had 3 strides before the hit came. So if the coach can’t see that how is he going to see his top two players challenging PK Subban for the dubious honor of Top Dive against Boston or the fact that but for a terrible missed slashing call this came was 8-0.
Totally agreed Paddy. Clode showed his class tonight, coming right out and saying he didn’t tolerate it from his own players. It’s obviously a lot easier after a win, but for all the crap Clode has caught since he came here, he showed tonight how much he outclasses Alain Vigneault
TV said Horton thought he was in Vancouver
Seriously just pathetic from the Canadien in the room, the Chara hit was due to your crappy building and an unfortunate play.
Horton’s hit on the other hand came from a team that is struggling to be offensive so they get away with hits below the knee and then pull crap like this.
As far as the biting taunting goes if you watch the players post game presser you’ll hear that Recchi got an earful from Claude Julien who is clearly the only class to come out of your want-away Canadian state. Especially after the antics of Alain Vigneault’s diving, biting, late-hitting, pathetic goalentding bunch tonight.
Its definitely true. No chance he comes back this series. Hopefully Rome gets similar treatment. Then hopefully they insert Ballard, and he tomahawks Luongo in the dome.
Heard through the grapevine Horton has a Grade 3 concussion and is done for the series. Hope its not true!
Wait, where are all the Vancouver trolls talking about how dirty the Bruins are? Oh, that’s right, their classy team threw the dirtiest hit in the playoffs, and possibly the entire season. Defend that one trolls.
jpt- Are the seals clubbing you?
i’ve got a fist for you, jpt. turn yourself into chris matthews.
Can it JPT.
I’m really hoping for Horton’s health, that looked really bad.
If this was a regular season game, it would be a 20+ game suspension. Judging by how NHL works now, i’m guessing a 2 minute suspension
JPT, guess what. In his presser CJ just said he didn’t like it and wouldn’t tolerate it. Didn’t pretend he didn’t see it, owned up and stuck to his words. It’s called class.
Wanna shut up now?
MK can you ban this moron already. Seriously, JPT, why are you even here?
Did I call that on comment #3 or what?
JPT – Seriously? It’s so old now. You’re act is obnoxious. What does it say about a person who posts on other teams blogs to annoy their fans? Pathetic.
hmm where to start canucks played liek crap tonite cant lie about that, but just some things to get off my chest. First off claude julien good for u talking down to our team about baiting a bite and ur loser team comes out and does the same thing twice. Second, Rome’s hit was late but my God if he gets suspended i will lose my mind o and horton i hope ur staying in the hospital until next season (horton hears a who? no he hears a rome u loser). Third, Mr. Ference u must feel special trying to take yet another dirty play this time on daniel sedin and then u dont have the balls to fight bieksa becuase u kno u will b in the hospital with horton (look out for torres u mite b in there after game 4). Fourth, as if the burrows bite was bad how about seidenberg giving burrows a shot in the nuts, this aint world war II u cant just go around nutting people u should be suspended along with ference for ur stupid antics and just because our players dont flop like fishes and lie on the ground like horton they dont get penalties let alone suspensions.
Jean Phillippe you are an ass. The Chara incident had more to do with poor board/glass design than anything else. He’s a Norris winner. What is Rome? You are a just a cheese munching Hab fan who needs to go back to his boyfriend Andre and let him slap his nuts in your face again.
I hope they give Rome a Good suspension, as they did with Chara…
It’s called taunting JPT, are you dense?
Hey Claude Julien, you dummy, you were all over Lapierre for putting his finger at Bergeron. You said you would never see that on your side. Well then how do you explain what Lucic was doing to Burrows in the third period.
And as for Horton, what were the Bruins saying after the Pacieretty hit. It was just a hockey play, it wasn’t done on purpose, Paciieretty was faking. How come we don’t hear any of this about the Horton hit. What goes around comes around Bruins.
Saying a prayer for Nathan. A great win was the best his team could do for him tonight.
That was an extremely cheap hit. The Canucks have not been impressing me with their class during this series. They are just a bunch of classless fools.
Very scary to see him so out of it on the ice. That was a disgusting hit, and I hope Horton has a speedy recovery with no lasting effects.
Rome, I hope, will not be playing again til sometime next season…and not at the start. Gutless player, fits right in with the divers, biters, and actors on the Canucks.
Rome has been a career minor leaguer. I wish they would suspend his ass for a whole year.
cue the habs trolls
Best wishes to Horton, and here’s hoping that Rome doesn’t see a shift in the NHL for quite some time. Talk about a scary flashback to the Savard hit…
Thank God Nathan is moving.
