You vote: Should Shawn Thornton get back into Bruins’ lineup?
The Bruins just haven’t looked themselves the first couple games of the Stanley Cup Final.
And some of Vancouver’s more physical players took liberties and did some taunting during their team’s run out to a 2-0 series lead heading into tonight’s Game 3 at the TD Garden.
It’s obvious the Bruins could use more bite (probably the wrong term this series) in their lineup, and Shawn Thornton seems willing, ready and able to help the cause. With Thornton in tow, some Canucks fake tough guys might tone down their act. The Bruins would be able to field a fourth line that’d be difficult for the Canucks to handle down low and could provide a momentum-changing shift if necessary.
Of course, who would come out if Thornton went in? After you vote on Thornton’s re-entry, use the comment section to let me know who should come out and what the lines should look like:

Put Thornton in. He brings a dynamic those guys need. He will also have a mental effect against Vancouvers lineup. The B’s need some balls out there.
aside from the burrows lapiere thing the canucks are in boston to play hockey. ben eager taught the canucks how respond to anything thorton brings to the table
I agree with Vikingfan. Give Rex those 5-6 mins on the Campbell line, plus a little PP time, and he won’t look so old and useless all the time. He’ll be fresh and be able to contribute to that 4th line everything Thornton could, sans the fisticuffs. Sitting the heart and soul of the team’s veteran leadership during a make-or-break game in the Stanley Cup Finals doesn’t seem like a good idea to me.
As far as Seguin is concerned, I think it is now or never to put him on a scoring line and see if he can produce. Put him with Bergy and Marchand and see if they can set him up with chances, rather than expecting a 19 year old kid to try and shoulder the entire playmaking burden of his current line.
MCK, ANYTHING to do with the B’s PP is a coincidence. Although it’s gotten better, the PP has been nothing more than a “look at how well we can play keep away from the other team”. Everyone is looking for the perfect shot on net Heck with that mentality the refs should be figuring into our minimal PP goals this season since they were on the ice too. Seguin is afraid to dig in the corners and get hit. Thornton certainly doesn’t have the finesse of Seguin but he can fight in the corners and get the puck in front to someone who can pound it home. He’s the only Bruin who has shown up to every game and given 110% all season and for that alone deserves to be out there till the end.
What you guys are forgetting is that Thornton’s ice time in the playoffs was only about 5-6 minutes per game while he was playing.
This would solve everything:
Lucic, Krejchi, Horton
Marchand, Bergy, Seguin
Peverly, Kelly, Ryder
Paille, Campbell, Recchi
The Bruins need more goals, I just don’t understand how sitting Seguin would help that. It’s not like they’re getting blown out, so his defense isnt killing us.
Here we go with the criticism of Seguin’s game on the one hand and management’s treatment of him on the other.
Coincidence he was on the ice for a power play goal?
When Seguin scored 2 goals I thought…This is the worse thing in the world for the b’s because I knew Thornton sitting was next.
Thornton does more than punch. He does things that the kid refuses to do. Things like sweat, and bleed, and gasp for air, as well as look for work in the corners. Seguin played 7 or 8 soft minutes last game.
OF COURSE YOU CAN SIT HIM
Being a seguinista, clod might as well sit him because playing a scared youngster 6-8 minutes a game is never going to give him confidence. clod and management are a complete failure with Seguin. He will play 2 more years at 900 thou. and be gone.
They have 3 goals, as they scored 2 in game 2.
Maybe guys who are paid like 30 goals scorers should start scoring. Lucic and Horton are…hmmm…who could I be talking about…
I voted yes, and I think we have to sit Rex. I don’t think one deflection vindicates his terrible play these two games. He’s clearly out of gas, and watching him skate is painful. I love Rex, but I think he’s doing more harm than good right now.
@Nifty; The Leafs will be an interesting bunch to watch for next year and over… I love to way they’re shaping up to be…They’re in the P/O next year for sure. Who knows, maybe they’ll win the cup before Julien does.
They’ve scored two goals in two games. They should insert an offensive player. Oh snap. The two they have are already playing. Their top scorer had sixty two points. Clarke MacArthur had sixty two points. Do they have parades for Vezina and Norris trophys?
As much as I would love to see Thornton in there, I voted no. 1) Campbell and Paille are just too important to the PK, and that has been huge in keeping us in the games. 2) Seguin is a scoring threat, and we need as many of those as we can get. Plus I just have the feeling that 3rd line is going to turn things on for us.
I believe, with others, that the guys they have been playing can get the job done… CJ just needs to spread the playing time around a little more to keep everyone as fresh as possible in that crucial 3rd period.
With or without Thornton, the Bs will play a nastier game at home. I am sure of it.
Actually, couldn’t Boychuck just pound somebody? We won’t miss him in the PBox
As much as it pains me to say it I have to agree with RD. The line-up doesn’t need more muscle, it needs the muscle that is already in to play like they did against Philly.
(RD) “Do you guys want to WIN or do you just want to pound your chests?”
Yes
Recchi answered Saturday night.
Sit the kid.
Go B’s
Play the big ape sit Rex and stir the pot CJ has to try something…
I voted yes. I like MCK and Ryan’s comments. I sit Recchi and tied Julien on a four legged chair in the showers for the remainder of the bout.
DO NOT PUT THORNTON IN
As much as Paille has done on the PK, I think he would be the odd man out. Seguin hasn’t produced, but he hasnt looked bad either. He can provide more potential offense.
Sit Recchi He may be helping somewhat, but hasn’t contributed much. He’s just sort of out there for an occasional pass or two.
B’s need scoring, and Thornton can’t provide that. Sitting Campbell or Paille would be idiotic because they are central to PK and Thornton also doesn’t provide that. Sure he can fight but there is no fighting in the playoffs and Vancouver won’t drop the gloves anyway. If Thornton tries to stir something up he’ll just draw a needless penalty. This is not the time to be worrying about petty retribution. We are in the Stanley Cup finals and need to find a way to score more goals!!!
Thornton brings fighting to the game. He doesn’t hit an ounce harder than Lucic and Horton already do. Further, unless his job is to go out there and goon someone and get tossed he isn’t going to be able to fight anyone.
I think the issue here isn’t whether Thornton can save the series because he can’t but as to why Lucic and Horton and Boychuck and other physical players have not been doing their jobs. (Also Chara)
You need to be physical AND be able to play hockey. Thornton isn’t even able to crack the lineup. I don’t think it’s fair to Shawn to think this will make a difference.
On top of it all, he will be pretty cold having not played in a while.
I vote yes and sit campbell or paille.
RD, you are wrong. Thornton will bring some order to the ice surface. As it stands now, Van is prancing around the ice without fear and without the worry that the refs or league will do anything about it. You think Lapierre or Burrows will try that crap with Thornton out there? He doesn’t need to fight any one, he just needs to plant a few Van defenseman in the boards, or perhaps smash a Sedin at open ice and they will get the point.
On Seguin, Claude obviously isn’t going to let him roam free like he should. He would prefer to keep Ryder and Recchi’s minutes high because they have more experience. It is a sad reality that the guy on the team with the best pure offensive talent doesn’t get to play.
As for the minutes, ie, who sits, Paille and Campbell barely play. They basically play only on the PK. Campbell is a center, so for me, it is Paille who has to sit. Someone else can fill in for him on the PK, which he obviously does an excellent job at.
They could of course change nothing and stop making dumb mistakes at inopportune times. Take 3-4 dumb mistakes out of this series, and it is probably tied 1-1.
Thornton isn’t a game breaker. He’s muscle. The only reason you want him in the lineup is to exact some type of physical retribution for things that went on in game one and two. Do you guys want to WIN or do you just want to pound your chests?
He has 25 career goals. I say let Seguin play 12 minutes instead.
Bang on Ryan, regarding the kids ice time and usage.
I’m going with no, but it all depends on the usage of Seguin.
If Seguin isn’t going to get PP time, and is only going to play 5-6 mins in certain “safe” situations, then he’s a waste of a roster spot and should still be in JUNIOR. Am I the only one who thought Seguin played his best game in #7 against Tampa Bay? Not coincidentally he played 15 minutes that night.
If things are going to stay the same, with Seguin playing 5 minutes, and Julien shuffling line combos to keep Seguin off the ice, then of course you put Thornton in, but I think it’s the wrong move.
Whatever Julien decides, it has to allow him to roll 4 lines out consistantly, that’s how we win 7 game series’.
I don’t see anyone who we can cut for Thorton to actually make the team better/more able to beat down the opposition. I vote no
Yes, but who sits is a really tough question. In complete contrast to MCK, I think that Campbell and Paille are too important for the PK, so I’m going to go w/ Seguin. Either way, I don’t think that it’s going to happen and the line-up will be the same tonight.
Yes, but sitting Seguin for him is a mistake. It has to be Campbell or Paille.
