Move over Marc Savard and make room on the sidelines for a teammate.
Another Bruins player has been felled by a cheap shot and another Bruins player has now has a foggier career future due to a head injury.
The Bruins this morning announced that Nathan Horton, nailed in the head by Aaron Rome of Vancouver in last night’s Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, is out for the rest of the series with a severe concussion.
Savard has famously been out since January after his second concussion in 10 months. At last update, Savard was still feeling post-concussion syndrome.
According to Horton’s bio on TSN.ca, he has not suffered a concussion previously.
In addition to Savard, David Krejci (twice) and Patrice Bergeron (three times), as well as rookie Steven Kampfer this season, have suffered concussions on the ice over the last several seasons.
There’s no telling how long the recovery will be or how the injury will affect Horton for the rest of his career.
Rumor has it the league will get serious about reducing the number of head injuries to the Bruins and all 30 teams when it runs out of players crazy enough to participate in the sport.

Both teams had respect for each other in that game though, as they should have. It will be hard for the Bruins to respect the Canucks after the first couple games. I think the onus is really on the canucks to stop being idiots.
George, you have it ass backwards. it shouldn’t be about whether penalties are called. It should be about whether infractions are committed or not.
All I hear about is the belly aching that the refs missed this and that. Now you want the refs to miss everything? It’s up to the players to play within the rules. If they do, then the refs don’t have to call everything.
This is childish.
Both teams are acting like fools and are making a mockery of the sport on the national stage. The fans are worse!
People, the thread was about the fact that Horton is done with a severe concussion. This nonsense is about fans trashing fans.
USA has a weak dollar, Vancouver has drugs, Boston has good schools, Montreal has the hottest women…WTH? Is this elementary school?
I’m amazed nobody has been trying to iron out the details on how Boston potted 8 goals despite being badly outshot or how Vancouver will adjust with only 4 regular defensemen…
Is Luongo’s confidence wrecked or is this just another mulligan for the guy?
Did Boston just waste it’s entire offensive wad or was this all part of Julien’s 24 game offensive arc?
unfortunately game 4 might be just ruined by the refs having an NHL mandate to stop the garbage. Fans of both teams might lose their minds if the refs try to control the game. We can probably agree that Tampa game 7 with no penalties called was really fun to watch.
That suspension is a joke
Steamer – knob-gobbler? Really? What are you, 12?
Probably shouldn’t bring up the economy Steamer, unless you have an expert knowledge of international economics. Let’s stick to hockey, and stop trying to compare two cities/nations
Rome is out for the rest of the Finals, and depending on when they conclude, the suspension will carry over to next season. Glad to see some discipline handed out by the NHL, although given the kind of player Rome is – talentless and apparently gutless – maybe it would’ve been better if he was forced to play out the rest of the series. Total liability for the first couple of shifts, and then a non factor as he’d probably be on his way to the hospital to treat some fist-sized dents to the face.
Best wishes to Horton. Lets hope he makes a full recovery and we are lucky enough to have him back at the Garden next season smiling and showing off his ring to reporters.
John and Nifty,
I was talking about the team . Relax.
But while you are it.. How’s that recession going on downthere… How’s your dollar? Anymore war’s you want to start and not finish or win… MIT or Harvard well yeah got me there.
Lets sum this up as this… There is bad blood between the two teams. Game 1 and 2 was excellent even though the canucks won. Game 3 was not good hockey, great game if you are Bruins fan, not good for just a hockey fan…
2-1 series… Game 4 is huge… I hope for a clean game and the ref’s call the bullshit both ways or none. Agreed…? GAME ON bruins…
The NHL really botched this suspension of Rome…another stupid decision out of the front office.
Vancouver does draw Canada’s brightest minds. If by “bright” you mean chemically altered by smoking four pounds of weed a day.
Hey nice classy play by Torres late in the game. There’s another guy you must be real proud of
Chara rarely uses all his strength because that would end careers on legal hits. I saw a few slashes by Chara towards Burrows last game, which were provoked. If you think using his stick to go after the puck is the same thing as slashing, maybe I can see where you are coming from.
I doubt Ferrence would back down from Bieksa. Of all the players on the Bruins, shy of Chara and thorton, no one is a better fighter. He generally puts bigger guys down in convincing manner. Also, hard to believe he wouldn’t take that trade. Bieksa is you top line d-man, and he is a second liner. Not only that, but you would be stuck at 4 d-men for 5 minutes. Ferrence would certainly understand that and take the fight to make the point. Of course, Bieksa could have been trying to get Ferrence to bite his finger.
I understand Vansterdam is all about higher learning. Van is forever drawing Canada’s brightest minds. The V.D.(vancouver district) is known for their M.I.Ts and Harvards. Not.
Are you serious Steamer? Looch got thrown out of the game for that.
And actually Boston is known for being a very intelligent city. Know your stuff before making broad generalizations.
Horton’s health is the most important thing. The good news, and perhaps the only good news, is that the Bruins are very good in dealing with concussions. I’m sure they will err on the side of caution. Ference isn’t known for fisticuffs, but I haven’t seen him back down from anyone. Rome isn’t worth discussing. Burrows is a punk. LaPierre we know about; he’s pathetic.
The Sedin Twins: http://www.idolimage.org/olsen-twins-14/
Burrows is a coward plain and simple and you’re a POS
Hey MCK and Sarge,
Enjoy your day sitting on top of the world. It won’t last
Lack of Honor… Let’s see….. Lucic… a vancouver favourite..
Slash Burrows… Burrows embelishes and goes down…
Lucic punches him in the side of the head. No penalty nothing. No whining here though… Burrows is what 170 lbs soaking wet and supposed to fight Thornton or Lucic? Hmmm Honor no? Stupidity well Bawstin isn’t known for brains
Stop whining about Chara slashing people. He’s bigger and stronger than everyone else in the league, get over it. He doesn’t do that stuff, he plays defense. Seen way more stickwork by Vancouver this series.
MCK,
Yeah cause Kessler is our no 2 tough guy… He takes on Chara each shift… Chara lumber queen…
Ference had his chance… watch the next game this will continue.
Hope Nathan has a speedy recovery.. Too bad for Rome but he did what he did… I betcha game 4 is called alot tighter and this will play into Vancouver’s game.
It’s hacking, it’s slashing, it’s grabbing, it’s wondering why players go down when we slash’em where there are no pad’s. It’s the Boston Bruins ..
Steamer has propensity to open his pie hole and say stupid things. Vigneault was a twerp and is as a coach. His team reflects the same lack of honor.
For his own safety
Rome gone for the series. Get well Nathan! Go B’s
Horton out of hospital.
Steams, no one slashed the ninny. That is great news to hear that D. Sedin is one of the tough guys on Van. If he is so tough, why wait until Ference is turned away to go over and hug him from behind. John is spot on, these two schmucks are soft as grapes
Ference isnt a punk. If Bieksa wants to go, I am positive Ference will oblige. That likely goes for the entire Van team. Maybe next time Kesler will pick a real opponent. He didn’t seem so tough with #22 in the vicinity.
It’s faking. It’s diving. It’s bitching. It’s the Vancouver Canucks.
Katie showed up and barred the door. Great team win. The Bruins should continue this physical punnishment on these overrated wimps. They were scared shitless lastnight.
Good one MCK, totally forgot about that until now. Since when do players grab their faces after getting hit in the shoulder? Oh thats right, the Sedins. I’m not here to bash European hockey players, as there are a number of very good ones on both sides of the ice, but the Sedins couldn’t act more stereotypically European. Highly skilled, very soft, and diving all over the place.
MCK,
Yeah Sedin went down. After ferrence slashed him again. Probably hurt who knows… At least he went after him… Yeah our leading scorer is our tough guy… He had enough, game was lost, you can’t really fault him for that…
As for Ference backing down… Yeah he did… Bieksa was waggling the gloves and ferrence hid behind the ref
I don’t recall Ference backing down from Bieksa. I recall that douche Sedin grabbing Ference from behind after Ference dumped him and Sedin faked an injury.
George,
Kinda like Ferrence didn’t want to fight Bieksa… yeah that’s a man
I agree with George, except for the Kesler part. He is a bitch.
Rome’s cue to come forward was when he saw Horton skating away from his pass. The result: two skaters skating opposite directions, one not looking forward, and then smash. (We can all relate a few occurences with the same cirumstances cuz this tactic has become a trend or has been identified by hockey heads as an opportunity to hurt type of cue.)
Had Horton decided to follow his pass and locally outnumber the Nucks coming in, then Rome continues to skate rearward and there is no hit.
I’m just trying to read in Rome’s mind a split second before he plants his skates and decides to come forward in an effort to guess how many games i’ll get if he gets any.
I have a problem with the definition of a blind side hit if that includes pinching ins, open ice hits coming from a defenseman who’s actually in front of the action.
It’s the guy who skates forward without his head up that blinds himself, the checker is not coming from behind or from the side exerting back pressure. He is not trying to check a guy exiting from behind the net on a wrap around attempt in Death Valley either. He is doing what others before him have dones but late late late.
1. Late hit
2. Intention to hurt
3. Blind side hit does not fit here I’m afraid
Rome gets 1 game I would think.
Get well whatever time it takes Nathan, we are no physicians and hockey is futile at this point…
Great point about losing future players Matt. That’s not the best promotion for your game. The biggest stage and you have an idiot successfully and delibarately injure an unsuspecting player.
It makes me sick and is what is entirely wrong with the game. I noticed TSN edited McGuire’s comments from last night. He said he didn’t think the NHL would suspend Rome. If anybody thinks Pierre knows hockey you’re wrong.
So many people have left hockey due to unregulated thuggery. Can you blame them? Would you want to be Nathan’s parents and watch your son lying in trauma. Just because he’s a pro athlete making a good living doesn’t give us a gladitorial right.
That’s a human being lying there. How can Rome live with the fact he greviously hurt another player? I don’t buy the it’s a fast game or it’s a contact game. The key word is game. Life isn’t a game it’s something precious.
Of the games follow the tone of game 3 then it would benefit the Bruins. It’s funny how the Bruins are labeled goons here, when the Canucks have a player that bit a Bruin and another player who made a dirty hit that had someone taken out on a stretcher. I would rather take the goons any day than cheer for a bunch diving, faking, embellishing cowards who refuse to fight after provoking. I think the Canucks need to follow Kesler’s lead because he is definitely a player that I can respect how he plays and dropped the gloves to stand up for his teammates.
That was the most haunting aftermath of a hit I’ve ever seen. I just hope beyond hope that Nathan is OK. Rome should be out of the series
Steamer, based on a lot of your other comments I can tell that, although you post some offensive remarks, you are not here simply to troll. That said, can you please show some respect and save your insults for a different thread?
Also, if you were more familiar with Thornton’s game you would know that his role is not simply that of enforcer. He is actually a skilled player and not a goon… his primary role is to provide heart and leadership. The a$$-kickings he provides just come with the package.
@Steamer, take your drama elsewhere. No one cares about your richard measuring contest.
Get well soon, Horton.
Scoreboard, steamer. I think it works against at least one team…
Bojangles,
You are a thug. Yeah the Sedins are punks… Can you take off your glasses for a second. Burrows should fight thornton to get your respect right? Thornton is a goon. You are a neanderthal. I wish both teams get back to playing hockey not all this fingergate crap and scrums.. Problem is Boston only knows muck, scrape, clutch, grab. It only will work for so long. Enjoy your day, tommorow is another game.
Hey I heard you got some new pumps to put you over 5’6″… Better get some more protein knob gobbler
@Bojangles…I was making reference to the finger taunts when I said classy up. I’m on your side…I just don’t think turning this into a “gong show” as Ryan put it is going to get us what we want…The Cup. But we will just have to agree to disagree on how that gets done. However if the Bruins do win the cup and a few Canucks get run over in the process I will be cheering as loudly as you. I am all for good old school Bruins Style hockey. Its the NBA style, childish BS that I think hurts the game.
“Dear Canucks, keep your heads up. You haven’t seen anything yet. We’re coming for you. ” – the Bruins
GAME 4 will be SEEK AND DESTROY
This situation reminds me of the McClaren hit on Zednick in 2002 until that point it looked like the Bruins were going to roll over the Habs like fresh asphalt, after that hit the Bruins got timid and the Habs got angry. Hopefully the same dynamic will play out in this series.
Screw this Classy-Up baloney!
Burrows, Rome, LaPierre, Sedins – Punks every one.
Its time to draw a line in the sand – not classy-up. Its time to take no prisoners and give no quarter. How many times do you want this team to bend over and say thank you?!
@Ryan I believe you may be right my friend.
I gotta say it, if Burrows gets suspended for the bite then Lapierre doesn’t push his finger in Bergeron’s face and this series doesn’t turn into a gong show. Now we’ve lost yet another superstar to a severe head injury suffered on a dirty, and clearly illegal hit on the games biggest stage. The NHL’s credibility hinges on this hearing, in my opinion.
No one can be surprised that he’s gone for the Playoffs. Nasty hit and he was out cold. The stiff limbs is a sure sign that nothing good was going to come of it.
I have spent too much time this morning reading every armchair coach’s opinion on the hit, the finger taunts, Thornton, Chara/Pacioretty, “classy behavior” etc. etc. I only hope the B’s are putting it all behind them and are getting ready to go out Wednesday night and even the series. Time to move on, classy up, bare down and win some hockey games. In the post game interviews you could almost see it on their faces. The Bruins seemed to be refocused (a lecture from Claude I suspect)while the Canucks seem to be trying to convince themselves that it was no big deal. Well the fact is it was a big deal. You lost by 7 goals, got handed a dose of your own school yard antics and gave the B’s a reason to beat you up (Horton). If the B’s can keep their focus going forward I like their chances…and as far as a suspension goes…who cares? We lost a top 3 guy and they lost a pylon if he gets suspended. If I were the Bruins I would be hoping he doesn’t get suspended. He is a liability out there to be exploited. I like the suggestion that in lieu of suspension he should be forced to play 15 or 20 minutes per game. That would be a handicap. You really want to punish Rome and the Nucks? Make them watch as you put up 8 spots 3 more times and skate around the Garden Ice shaking Lord Stanley’s trophy over your head.
I’m guessing Sedin got that misconduct because he was afraid to be on the ice.
I don’t have a lot bad to say about Kesler, though. Be honest, we’d love to see him in Black and Gold.
Well Aaron Rome’s cheap shot will go down as one of the cheapest, dirtiest, and costliest in major sports history. I’m looking for the Bruins to come out with more of the same ala the 2nd and 3rd periods of Game 3, and take game 4 by another lopsided score. Maybe 6-2. And they will continue to crush the Canucks and batter and bruise them, hopefully a couple of broken bones. Rome (a total scrub players) for Horton. I’m thinking a Boychuk or McQuaid will be lighting up a Sedin or two, and Burrows, and Kesler will make nice targets for some more clean HUGE body blows at full speed in open ice.
Don’t believe me canadian maggots? Sit back, watch it and weep. I’m here right in the middle of the city with a good feel for the pulse on the streets.
The only question I have is, will the Green Men be in uniform for game 4 to witness this massacre?
There is no way the Canucks will come back from this, thanks to Aaron Rome the scrub cheap shot artist.
queens are in a tough spot.
rome gets off easy – olsen twins and rebecca kesler are in mortal danger.
rome gets what he deserves – andrew alberts is now a top 4 defensemen.
God bless you, Nathan. Hope to see you back and smiling first thing next season.
