BOSTON — The Bruins had no idea that when they left the ice tonight after a 4-0 win in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final they’d have a surprise waiting for them.
But sure enough, there was Nathan Horton on hand to present the gaudy celebratory windbreaker, which he won back in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final.
Horton was knocked out with a severe concussion in the first period of Game 3 of the Final Monday by a high hit from Vancouver defenseman Aaron Rome, who received a four-game suspension for the play.
Earlier today, many Bruins said that Horton was feeling better. They obviously didn’t know how much better, especially considering what the organization has seen the likes of Patrice Bergeron and Marc Savard go through in recent seasons.
“He’s a very important person on this team. He’s a good person. To see him healthy was important,” said Rich Peverley, who got the jacket from Horton after scoring twice in the series-tying victory.
After winning Game 3 Monday, the Bruins left the Andrew Ference eBay find hanging in Horton’s locker because he wasn’t around to pass it on. Goaltender Tim Thomas, who also had a windbreaker-worthy performance with a 38-save shutout, was also pleased by Horton’s visit.
“When I personally got to see him in the locker room, you know, I was incredibly happy and it gave me a big boost,” said the netminder. “He was there to pass the jacket on. We didn’t pass the jacket on the last game with him gone. I think the team would have been happy leaving it with Horty for the rest of this series, but he wanted to give it away and keep the tradition going that we’d started.
“So actually he gave it to Peverley, the guy who replaced him on the line.”
Throughout the night, signs were shown wishing Horton well and urging the Bruins to win the game — and the Cup — for their fallen teammate. In the third period, the fans chanted his name.
“Well obviously if you lose a guy, you want to play not just for him but for everybody else,” said captain Zdeno Chara. “But we know he would love to play and it’s just very unfortunate that we lost a player. And so we all are one big family. We play for each other so …”
Horton was on a Conn Smythe pace with eight goals, including three game-winners, before his injury. Even when out of uniform, he’s proved he can contribute to the Bruins’ success.

I have that exact same jacket & still wear it! It was given to me (new) in 1989 by my nephew. OMG! I feel special! lol
When i saw this men what a relief this guy more then deserve this!Hope is not faking like bergy did and would show what it is to his teammate
Lololl at his arm pointing the sky
Honestly I think that jacket is one of the pieces to the absolute team commitment they have shown. The one thing I notice is that in general the Bruins are all about the team-team first, team performance etc.
I know Ference didn’t intend the jacket to become what it has when he bought it, but I think the jacket has made me appreciate that Ference seems to be a locker room leader.
I love the jacket-and was touched by the photo of it hanging in Horton’s space, and I think it is outstanding that Horton was able to come and pass the jacket along.
I suspect Horton has a long road to recovery ahead of him, and my fingers are crossed that while he won’t get to play in anymore Stanley Cup Games his teammates finish the job and he gets his name on the cup.
Great to see Horton is feeling better he is a great player and a even better person
@Joe. Great post.
I feel for what Nathan is going to go through this summer because his headaches are going to get bad for awhile. Good to hear he came in for a visit just bummed he can’t play.
Go Bs!
Yes, Ference got that on Ebay last year for something like $35!
Way to go Bruins, do it for Horty! Great to hear Nathan is up and about…
Aaron Romes’ blatant head hunting cheap shot: talk about waking a sleeping giant!

Says an awful lot about a few things:
A) His RELATIVE bounce-back from what left some of us questioning if he’d ever play again, much less be back for next season – especially knowing all too well that Savvy and Bergeron had light sensitivity for weeks after theirs – this is a good, albeit very early, indication that this may not be as dire as originally thought. Still a long way to go, but I’m hopeful and relieved that Horty’s on his feet.
B) Also says a lot about both his committment to his teammates and his appreciation for their play with him off the roster. The fact it went to Peverley is a bit poetic if nothing else, but Horton being there says to me that he’s there for his teammates, first and foremost. When players play for one another – not for accollades, media, etc – that’s when special moments happen. Last night’s was about as special as any this city has seen in quite some time.
C) I think it speaks to his make-up, too. Let’s not forget that this was questioned ad nauseum during his time in Florida. Horton’s a tough, emotional guy and to see him acting upon that instinctis a good sign about his physical well-being and it lends volumes to the arguments against any of his remaining critics.
Hard to not get caught up in the story. Fans, media, teammates should all be sharing the same pride and satisfaction I am right now. This series is far from over, and the Bruins look great, but sometimes there are issues surrounding sports that transcend the game on the field/ice/court/etc. Last night was a great example.
Oh I just re-read the article. Idiot! Yes, it must be true.
I heard that AF hunted down that jacket on ebay. True?
I was so happy to hear Horty made it to the locker room it also just about brought a tear to my eye. I’m sure the next best thing to playing in the game is being there and feeling a little bit more a part of it. More importantly, it speaks very well about his recovery.
Now we need to go up to Vancouver and effing end these people on their own ice. Stay intense
I love the jacket thing….that is so this team…….good for them…..2 wins to go……I love June hockey…….ain’t it the best!
Bruins are the best. What a Team.
