VANCOUVER — For the first time in the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Bruins are going to have to stave off elimination to force a Game 7.
The Bruins couldn’t solve Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo tonight on 31 shots on goal and squandered four power-play opportunities in a 1-0 loss to the Canucks in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at Rogers Arena.
Game 6 is Monday night at TD Garden.
The Bruins have won two seventh games to get to this point have been behind in series but never with their season on the line prior to Game 7.
Here’s a quick glance at the box score:
•Patrice Bergeron led the Bruins with six shots on goal. At the other end of the spectrum, Milan Lucic failed to test Luongo all night.
•In net, Luongo won the battle but Tim Thomas was on top of his game with 24 saves. The only puck that eluded him was a tough-angle shot from Maxim Lapierre 4:35 into the third period.
•The Canucks were credited with 47 hits, led by Alexander Edler with 10.

RD – some comments fair – but I’ll defend MCK in that the Bruins have absolutely shut down the Canucks. How can you dispute this? 6 goals in 5 games for what all hailed as the superior offensive club. How many points for the wonder twins? Absolutely have shut down the Nucks.
Problem is – Bs have been shut down in also in 3 of the 5.
MCK, you’re doing something really weird.
You assume Canuck fans are pansies, when you’ve never met them.
You say it looks easy to shut down the Canucks but your team is having a hard time doing it. Maybe you ought to lace em up and show us how it’s done?
The Bruins are a good team, but the Canucks are also a good team. Both teams are tough. You don’t make it to the NHL without being able to take a beating.
It’s amazing how often you hear fans talk about toughness like they know what it’s like to take a hit. Fine, your team hits a lot, and sure, you’ve been a Bruins fan for a long time but this does not actually make you tough.
I suppose a little more respect for professional hockey players is what I think is appropriate since the smallest, weakest NHL player could probably wipe the floor with the average fan.
If Luongo plays at his best then they will win the cup on our turf. Canucks have shown they match or exceed our heart and they are more skilled than the Bruins by far. We need some crazy luck to beat this team unfortunately. At least our bruins got this far..
Dives..Slashes after the whistle. Both sides need to respect the integrity of the game.
I give both teams credit for an intense series. Whoever loses I hope their fans dont put on Cement boots..Both teams have given us a very entertaining series. I miss watching both Horton and Rome. I wish Horton a quick and full recovery BTW
I’ve been dishing out my fair of crap on Vancouver and their fans. Right now I’m licking my wounds from a ‘tip of the hat’ moment. I really didn’t think the ‘Nucks had it in them. I thought they’d played a great hockey game and gave the Bs a shocker in the intensity department. Well played game by both. Bs still can’t find that other level in Vancouver. Season rides on them doing just that.
Can you believe that the Globe has Shaugnessy and Ryan covering the Bs? I doubt they have ever been to a game. Ever. I doubt even the live shots of them at winks. What a pair of losers.
As for you Canucks on here, you can argue that the Bruins play rough (too rough for you pansies) and you can argue the Bruins play cheap (not true), but I will gladly take that team over a bunch of players that dive, fake injuries and bitch constantly. Burrows is an embarrassment. The Sedins and Luongo have no balls and are soft. None of them are doing anything to win this series. I frankly think that if the Bruins lose the series, they have pissed it away. It looks easy shutting down the several turtles on the Canucks.
Bruins are taking the next two and we are going to pee all over you when we do.
Well let’s hope the B’s keep it together at home and finally manage to find a way to win in game 7 in Vancouver.
This has definitely turned into a home ice kind of play offs-but the B’s need to win the next and fight hard in game 7.
I don’t think our passes were very clean and I swear almost everytime Ryder had his stick on the puck he found a way to turn it over.
I thought Seguin actually had some really nice shifts-but Marchand seemed all but invisible other than the one hit on him against the boards that sent him flying. I thought that looked pretty low-lower than the one Hamhuis had against Lucic (thought it was legal) and the one Marchand did trying to avoid Sedin’s after the whistle hit (the Canucks whined about being low).
Vancouver deserved that game, once again Thomas almost stole it for the Bruins.
Someone explain to me why at the beginning of the game Seguin is benched, then at the end suddenly he’s a scoring threat that needs to be out there.
LMFAO – Bruins play is nasty (blind side hits after whistle, boarding, attempts to injure players, etc.). I hate ‘em and it’s time they clean out the lockers for the season.
Cochee- stick to life on E Hastings, it suites you,
omg, I forgot to mention.
The series is far from over but I can’t imagine what it must feel like to have lost that game on a goal by Max Lappierre? As a habs fan, it stings a little but I’m still happy for him.
Couple that with the chomp and Burrows’ performance in game 2 and this must be pretty frustrating.
At least one more game of hockey this year! Enjoy it.
I’ve seen Bruins fans do disgraceful things while up here in Montreal. Strangely enough, it involved urinating.
I’ve also seen Montreal fans do worse. You guys are no better than anyone else, that’s all….or worse.
Cochee where are you getting these outlandish stories from? A credible news agency or a crack whore on the corner of any given street in Vancouver. My guess is crack whore.
Never any doubt. Good game. Welcome to the madhouse on Georgia. I hope the Bruins fans who take to urinating on visiting teams fans get their just desserts. Beyond classless. The Boston Pee Party.
The B’s D-men weren’t as smooth with getting the puck up ice as they were in games 3 & 4. It allowed the ‘Nucks to get their fore check going and clog center ice.
Louongo was good early and late,.. the B’s had their chances tonight.
Game 6 should be a doozy Monday night…. Let’s go B’s!
