VANCOUVER — In order to be focused on Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk said he was operating in the complete radio silence after the Bruins won Game 6 Monday night.
Boychuk had been involved in an unfortunate collision with Vancouver defenseman Mason Raymond early in Boston’s season-saving Game 6 victory and many were demonizing him for the play that resulted in Raymond suffering a vertebrae compression.
Despite his concern for Raymond’s health and the boos raining down on him at Rogers Arena last night, Boychuk was able to focus and form a solid second pair of defensemen with Andrew Ference in the Bruins’ Cup-clinching 4-0 win. He was a plus-2 with two hits.
“I didn’t look at the paper, I didn’t do nothing,” said Boychuk after the victory. “I’m just happy he’s going to be OK, he’s able to walk. That’s the absolute last thing I’d ever want anybody in the whole world … to hurt him like that.”
Raymond showed up to cheer on his Canucks teammates and was shown on the Jumbotron wearing a back brace. Boychuk, meanwhile, battled through his own adversity this postseason. At one point he was on the ice for seven consecutive goals against — a fact he really does care to talk about.
“It was just bad luck. And now I’m a champion,” said Boychuk, who in 25 postseason games finished with 3-6-9 totals and an impressive plus-12 rating. “You can say all you want about those seven goals. Nobody’s going to remember it. They’re going to remember us hoisting the Cup.”
An avid Red Sox fan, Boychuk’s hoping his new-found status as a champion will earn him a VIP invite to Fenway Park this summer.
“I hope so. I can’t wait to sit on The Monster again,” he said.
After helping the Bruins win the Cup, Boychuk can probably pick any seat he wants in New England.

@Nicklaus…Boston didn’t have to face San Jose…yeah they faced The Flyers and handed them their @sses. Just sayin’. I understand that the Nucks were playing hurt but you really have to consider that most of the damage (physical and mental) was dealt to them at the hands of the Bruins. They beat them down until they had nothing left in game 6 and 7.
I am a Canucks fan, Born and raised in Vancouver.
Fro Dog, You are the perfect example of classless and a hater.
Vancouver fans stayed to the very last minute of the game. Vancouver fans stayed at Rogers Arena, cheered for Boston on a great championship win and thanked their team for a great run! Both teams were champions just for being the last two standing, but only one can be the Stanley Cup champs. Congratulations Boston Bruins!
Vancouver has nothing to be ashamed of, as they were the Presidents Cup Winners and that is a tough enough feat in itself over 82 games. In the Stanley cup run, Vancouver played three very tough and physical opponents to get to the finals, one being the defending Stanley Cup Champs, very physical and defensive Nashville, big San Jose team, and were pretty beaten up by the time they faced Boston. But they battled on as best as they could. The Sedins were noble and showed class right to the end. They made no excuses and said that in this series, Boston was the better team.
News sources tell us that the Vancouver dressing room had an area where the players were getting pain shots, just so they could play on. Edler, broken fingers, Kesler – severe pulled groin, D. Sedin injured shoulder ( from a wicked hit from behind against San Jose), Salo – broken foot..and the list goes on. They were not a healthy team and Boston knew this. Lucic mentioned this in one of his interviews. Boston faced more finesse team and almost lost to Montreal and Tampa. They did not have to face the previous Stanley cup champs, a big team the size of San Jose and did not take the physical beating that Vancouver did.
As for the riots, they were hooligans who probably planned on doing what they did, win or loose. They do not represent the 99.9% majority of Vancouver fans who who cheered for both teams at the end. This city hosted and welcomed the world for the Winter Olympics and what a party it was!
The next day, following the riot, thousand of concerned Vancouver citizens & volunteers came back to clean up the mess, which was apparently organized on facebook…Now that is true Vancouver spirit.
Still can’t beleive it’s over, I’ve been a Bruins fan so long and this was such an awesome year. My expectations weren’s all that high going into the playoffs, but they were awesome. As they say a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link. The Bruins proved that there was no weak links here, the 4th line played as good as the 1st line in game 7.
nifty, I fully agree.
I also believe that playing at home in some ways hurt Van in game 7. They kept talking about home ice, home ice as though that in itself would take care of everything. Maybe that was just their way of trying to take pressure off of themselves, but it was also almost like they didn’t think they would need to adjust to the Bruins at all.
I just wanted to type that again.” Stanley Cup Champions”. When your team wins it you realize just how hard it is to do. I think Vancouver knows that just to get there again is going to take good fortune and a lot of hard work. It’s nice to see people get what they deserve. Both teams got what they deserved. A cocky and arrogant roster lost and a humble hard working team prevailed. The Hockey gods were on the ball.
I noticed a long hug between Julien and Johnny. Claude can relate to Boychuk and I think Johnny really respects Julien. That was a special moment between two guys that have neve been handed anything. Happy for them and everyone associated with the Stanley Cup Champs.
‘turds from Vancouver’ classless fan=Lord of the Flys mentality. What a hater.
agreed, if Boychuk continues to develop and become more consistent, he can be a serious contributor for years to come.
I found myself looking for Boychuck to unload on intimidated skaters. Love his upside.
Matt, great job this year on the blog. I read it everyday from Alaska. I travelled from there last week and watched the Bruin’s last three games from my hometown of Bedford, NH, with die hard family B’s fans!!! I’ve turned a lot of them onto your blog. Keep up the great work. P.S. At times I think I was the only one that believed in Recchi. What a way to go out huh? Class guy and great hockey player.
Greetings,
I just wanted to say congratulations to all of you guys. I am actually a Blackhawks fan living here near Chicago but after seeing my team win last year, I am glad you guys followed up and ended your drought.
What makes me happy the most is that you guys finished off those turds from Vancouver; by far the most classless bunch of players and fans in any sport (I’m a Bears fan too and I thought Vikings fans were the worst).
Once again, congratulations and enjoy the next few days. You never know when you may get to see it next.
Matt K – I want to join the chorus of gratitude and thank you for a great season. I really enjoy this blog. Keep up the great work. I’m already looking forward to some draft talk!!
Nice story Matt. Keep them coming.
The draft is around the corner and I was wondering who the Bruins might pick up.
vancouver popo could have used boychuk on riot patrol last night.
