Chiarelli doesn’t plan on letting Bruins sag after Stanley Cup
BOSTON — The Bruins have their coaching staff under contract, all but five of their 23 players are signed for next season and they emerged from the 2011 Stanley Cup championship run relatively healthy.
So a repeat should be in the works next season, right?
“Holy cow. You know, my charge is to win. So that’s what I have to plan to do,” said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli during a press conference at TD Garden today. “So we’re in a good position, we’ve got a lot of the team under contract. We’re in a good cap situation for once. We’ve got some young guys, we’ve got guys that are coming up. My charge is to win so we have to continue to keep that standard.”
If anyone can keep the Bruins near the top of the NHL, it’s obviously Chiarelli. After all, his five-year planned paid off in year five of his stint as GM.
“Well it feels really good. And you know, everyone talks about a plan. Whenever a manager takes a job they always have a plan or else they wouldn’t be doing their job,” said Chiarelli. “And I’ve talked to other managers and managers to be, and talked about certain plans. Pretty much everyone has a five-year plan and so did we.
“And it’s not like it fell exactly into place but we were adding certain elements, certain elements to get to that point. And it’s happened so I’m a genius.
After eliciting laughter, Chiarelli continued:
“But seriously you just continue to pick away at it with the same thing, and you know the performances we got from guys — Tim’s [Thomas] performance is historic — so I guess you know the common theme in the plan was character. I remember talking about hard to play against, closing gaps, it’s character and at the end of the day that’s what I wanted for us.”

The draft. Strome is talented, but the Bs picked up another version in Spooner last year. If they go forward, I see one of the more well rounded McNeil, Zin or Baertschi. I like Beaulieu over Murphy. Murphy seems like a fit for the Capitals, all showered in scoring titles and no glory of winning.
Plenty of cash. Rex, Ryder and Kabs coming off = -10.5. Give Marchmont a raise (+2.5) = -8. Consider a raise to the cap = -$11Million to play with. I’m no cap-geek, but that’s got to be close. That’s a lot of coin to fill 2 spots!!!
One more nice thing about playing for the Cup (besides winning) – we only have to wait a week for the draft! May hockey never end!
The best goalte in the world is American. Deal with it.
Just keep drafting and signing big tough Canadian players, as they make up almost all your team at 75%. They are built for for the long grind of playoff hockey and are not afraid to hit or get hit. They will go in the corners and fight hard for the puck. Hockey is almost a religion in Canada and that’s why Canadians are the best in the world! Not bad for a country that has a population that is less than California. I wish Canadian teams were as smart as Boston in their player selection and scouting. Congrats on the Stanley Cup Win!!
Is Rask expendable? It’s seems a waste to have such a good goalie sitting around doing nothing. He only has one year left on his contract and I would trade him if they get something back that they like (draft pick(s) or a veteran player. Plus they acquired a pretty good goalie from Minnesota who this offseason is a restricted free agent.
Rydes had a great postseason, and seems to bring it when it matters, but the flexibility from that roster slot/money is going to be extremely important for team stability moving forward – I think it’s time to let him go. Youngster’s coming up, and players that will need to be signed; Marchand’s deal will get done, mostly with Rex’s money – probably somewhere around 2.5-3M – but Krejci is also only under contract for one more year (at an awesome number), and if he continues to progress, he’ll be deserving of a healthy bump in pay.
I like Beaulieu at that spot. He may be better all around than Murphy. I’d sign Ryder at a fair price for both parties and look for a mobile guy for the back end. I haven’t watched Siemens play but the reports say he’s big and mobile and can be tough. I’d take Beaulieu if he’s there.
If they let Ryder and Kaberle go, they’ve got $5-7Mill to work with. They have Kampfer and Bartkowski, Caron and Spooner waiting to show what they can do. Maybe they wait and give them a look, then go get a big name when they see what is the need?
I really give PC credit for not shaping this team into a Chicago situation where so many players had to be moved after they won the Cup. Personally I would take Ryder back at 2mil but not Kaberle. How great is it that since the season was so long the draft is next week. If Savvy retires and Ryder/Kab leave they could afford pretty much anyone.
Ryder should be offered a $2mil contract with performance incentives. Kaberle shouldn’t be signed until they look into Pitkanen or Wisniewski. Richards will probably land in NY, though I do wish the B’s would court him. They would have the cap room with this year’s cap increase, no Ryder, no Recchi, and no Kaberle. My best guess is that Chia gets working on an extension for Rich Peverley or Chris Kelly… not both though.
The B’s pick 9th, 40th, and 81st…3 top 100 selections. Pretty good for a Stanley Cup Winner! It falls off to 121, 151, 181 and possibly the Panthers 7th rounder.
They have forward depth in Providence so maybe they go for Ryan Murphy or Oleskiak? They do need to get a mate for Seguin so Ryan Strome may not be out of the picture.
Monday night tells the tale. GO B’s!
interesting to see if savvy jerks chia around with his impending retirement.
i’ll say it. chia should keep ryder and kabby if he can get discounts. the former shows up in the playoffs and the latter makes for the perfect blueline whipping boy.
Brad Richards on that PP unit in place of Kaberle would fit in nicely, I think. That leaves us with Bergy-Krecji-Richard WOOOOOO!
Next year is already a blast imho. P.C. is working on it already I’m sure. Where else would Richards like to end his career if he wants to win another one???
After watching these playoffs, I think a shutdown defenseman is far more important. Seidenberg is offensively challenged and he was arguably their best defensive player.
Let’s hope he goes out and gets a character PMD, and a few character top-line forwards.
