One thing about The Hockey News writer Adam Proteau: he never pulls any punches.
Today Bruins free-agent defenseman Tomas Kaberle received a sock from Proteau along with four other prominent UFAs about to hit the market Friday.
In a story entitled “Five free agents you don’t want,” Proteau gives an explanation for why teams should shy away from Kaberle, Tomas Vokoun, Simon Gagne, Sean Bergenhim and Raffi Torres. I think it’s funny that four of the five players were key contributors to teams that reached the NHL final four.
Of Kaberle, Proteau writes:
Anyone who saw Kaberle meander around the rink after being traded from Toronto to Boston knows why I called him Bear Stearns on Twitter; like the now-disgraced Wall St. investment firm, Kaberle lost millions based on his performance with the Bruins. At age 33, he is a shell of what he was during his best days with the Leafs – and his physical play is about as tough as an empty shell.
Of course, as a puck-moving defenseman, Kaberle will receive a number of offers. But remember, whatever he giveth on offense, he taketh away in his own zone. If your GM winds up giving him more than three years and/or $3 million per season, you have every right to question your GM’s judgment and/or sanity.
I can understand Proteau warning teams not to commit too much term and cash to Kaberle. At 33 (he’ll be 34 by next year’s playoffs), he’s definitely on the downward portion of his career. However, I disagree that he would hurt a team defensively as much as he would help offensively. In a solid defensive system and playing with a solid goaltender behind him — think the Bruins, Devils, Kings, Penguins — Kaberle could succeed and be a much better contributor than he showed in his stint with Boston.
Nonetheless, there are probably better options for teams that don’t want to be on the hook for Kaberle in the second half of a deal longer than three years or have the depth in their organization to go younger and take their chances (the Bruins might fall in this category).

Haha! Proteau is the same guy who defended Cooke…saying he was just as much of a victim as Savard is/was.
If you’re reading, linking, debating and/or wasting your time with Proteau and THN, then shame on all of you. To give this guy link-juice and extra exposure is a joke.
I agree on your Richards assessment Nifty. Let’s just hypothesize the Leafs making the playoffs (I know it’s tough, but try). How easy is that team going to be to shut down?? Kessel doesn’t even know what a corner looks like and Richards sure as hell isn’t going in there.
As for Kabs, I’m hearing a lot of word that the Bruins organization was still quite happy with him. In the end, we most likely don’t win with Kampfer or Hnidy in the 6 spot, so he was obviously a plus there, and he took a lot of pressure off of Z and company with his calming presence on the back end. Considering his apparent defensive downside, he was only a minus in 2 playoff games (one of them being game 1 vs Montreal, the other being the 3-0 choke vs Tampa). The key could be how well he fit in the dressing room and how loved and respected he was there. Chia will wait and hope his value falls, which is smart, but if he can be had for around the same amount of his last contract, I think we will pull the trigger.
Wisniewski with CBJ: 6 yrs, 33 million. Man oh man, the going rate is getting pretty steep these days.
I like Wiz and am not a huge fan of Kaberle, but that would make Kaberle @ 3yrs/3 mil a pretty decent deal.
Thanks Matt for a fair and balanced analysis on Kaberle.
I believe Bs have their first round picks. Let’s drop an offer sheet to Weber and Stamkos just to screw with them!
@MCK. I’d have no problems doing that and I think it would be a wise move. It’s not like the guy has a big ego that needs to be stroked. That would give him security and the B’s would get value.
savvy coming back would be great. Unfortunately, krecji will probably get a Richards sized contract after next season
I am starting to believe they should extend him now, like they did with Bergeron. 5 years, 20-25 million sounds about right
Whatever Richards gets is too much. I’d rather have Krejci anyday at half the price. How has Dallas done since he went there? He came to a playoff team and now they’ve missed three straight years. Franchise player? I hope the Leafs sign him so people will see just how overvalued this guy is. He’s a good player not great. Great players get eight or nine maybe ten. It’ll be interesting to see how overpaid he’ll be. I don’t think he’ll go to a hockey market in the true sense. He won’t be able to fool those people for long. They’ll expect more for what they paid. New York is the place most guys go for their last contract. There’s alot of distractions in the big apple.
mark my words. savvy will be back after the new years to center the 3rd line and qb the pp…

oh, and great observation, rollie. ehrhoff means whale’s vagina in german.
Jagr time!!! Have him play on the 3rd line and run the PP
Ehrhoff is soft as they come – he shied away from all comers in the final – and was a -13 in the playoffs. Anyone else remember him trying to jump McQuaid, and then turtling the moment he realized they were squared up? (it was during Marchand’s assault on Ehrhoff/D.Sedin/Ballard)
He’s obviously far from a bad player – 50 points is 50 points – but I’m not sure he has the requisite grit to produce at crunch time. That term is disgusting, but Buffalo needed to make a big move. Definitely a good time to be a PMD.
Kaberle should go – Ryder? I keep watching youtube highlights of the Montreal series and beating the Habs in 7 meant so much that I cannot put him in proper perspective – I must recuse myself
10 as in ten years
Meanwhile, Erhoff gets 10, 40 million from the Sabres. That seems like a LOT to me. I was not impressed with him in the SC finals.
David Shoalts article “Never a better time to be Mr. Average” in the Globe and Mail is a good assessment on the NHL cap minimum.
No to both.
chia was smart to wait and see what the market will pay for kabby. ryder too.
