Newly signed Bruins forward Benoit Pouliot spoke with a pool report after inking a one-year deal with the club as an unrestricted free agent this afternoon.
He was asked about being ready to change his allegiance from the hated Montreal Canadiens to the Bruins.
“[I'm] not too worried, actually. You know what, it’s part of the game, it’s part of the business, it’s what you have to do,” he said. “Now I’m on the Boston Bruins and I’m going to enjoy every moment of it and try to help the team out as much as I can, and this is my team now. So I’m not looking to the past, I’m looking in the present, and what’s going to happen later on, when the camp starts. So I’m not too [worried]. Yeah we play Montreal often, which is going to be fun, I’m not going to lie, I’ll love it, but I’m a Bruin now and that’s what it is.”
Pouliot recorded 13-17-30 totals with the Canadiens last season. But by the end of the year he was a healthy scratch numerous times in the playoffs. He’s looking to get his career back on track now that he’s with the Bruins.
“I can do more. Obviously, this year was a tough year, not saying that I didn’t really get the chance that I should have, but sometimes, you know, you want to be on the top two lines, you want to be a power [play] player, especially when you’re playing well,” he said. “And at times, I was playing well and sometimes it’s the coach’s decision and you can’t really do anything about it, you just have to keep playing. It’s just a thing about being consistent every night, being good, playing good, in practice and in games. It’s just a thing about, my game, I mean the game is fine, it’s just being able to compete every night and every time you step on the ice.”

Whatever Bojangles, you always want to be a jerk, that’s fine. We’re talking about Pouliot.
I’m not saying he needs top 2 line minutes because it’s what he got in MTL, I’m saying it because he was a 3-4 th liner in Montreal and didn’t do the job. If he doesn’t get minutes, the signing doesn’t make sense. Sure, he’s cheap, but he’s utterly useless at 10 mins/game.
I love reading Habs fans posts. Like RD saying that Pouliot must play on a top two line. Well, that’s what shallow teams like the Habs say, but here in Boston where we are 3 scoring lines deep, we can envision a line centered by Peverley or Kelly with Seguin and Pouliot manning the wings as having quite a bit of offensive potential.
I just love the view up here – looking down at Montreal.
Haha… Love it Ryan. I was reading all these comments, calculating how to respond but you took the words right out of my mouth. 24 years old, can skate and has size and finish. I’m completely down at $1.1 million.
Wow, time to step back from the habs hate for a second.
Pouliot is a 24 year old who was drafted #4 overall, he’s Canadian, he’s 6’3″ and he’s a proven scorer at every level except the NHL. He spent last year stuck playing with pylons like Desharnais, Darche, White… I can understand why he felt like he didn’t get a fair shake in MTL, and he never played more than 37 games in a year in MIN. The kid has only played 1 full NHL season and he played it with pigeons. Just think back to how furious everyone was when Seguin was playing with the 4th line. It’s the same situation, he’s a skilled forward he’s not a checker, you can’t expect him to succeed if you put him in position to fail. If he can put on a few pounds and get some confidence playing on one of the top 3 lines he’s well worth a 1.1m gamble. He could develop into a PPG game guy, and we essentially get him for nothing.
George, no announcer should call a guy on the ice a chump. Edwards is just too bush league. The french broadcasts for the Canadiens are definitely lively but you would never hear the broadcast reduced to that.
Major disappointment? Sure. Worst in history? Edwards is obviously not very well versed in hockey. It would explain why he calls a different game than what is on the ice.
Erik Cole was a good pickup. It’s not only that he has some size and some grit, but the Habs actually managed to pick up one of the better free agents in the pool. This never happens. When you add up the higher taxes (YES, ours are way higher than in Mass.), the language laws, the constant media pressure, Montreal can be a tough sell for American free agents.
And yet, now we have
-Gionta
-Gomez
-Cole
-Gill
-Cole
Pretty soon they will call the Habs “America’s team”
RD,
Edwards is a true homer and fanboy of the team there is no doubt, sometimes he is way off base with his black and gold glasses. In this case Pouliot was a chump for that hit, and I think he’s a major disappointment for what he did in juniors and being drafted 4th overall.
I really think Cole was an awesome move for the Canadiens if his health holds up, scoring winger with size and grit just what they needed. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him out there on the first line to benefit from all that speed and pucks being thrown at the net for rebounds. Plus another PP threat, he fills a huge need for them.
George:
“what a chump” — Edwards doesn’t know these guys any more than you and I. Announcers reduced to name calling is kinda pathetic.
“Ferrence is gonna rip his head off” — Well, he got the takedown at least
“Benoit Pouliot, one of the greatest disapointments of talent in NHL history” — He is in the NHL, he’s young, he does score some goals in spurts. There have been so many worse busts compared to him.
“And Ferrence gets the take down– no surprise” — but look who’s on top of who? Pouliot’s on top of Ferrence.
It’s like Edwards has no idea what is unfolding in front of him, or thinks his viewing audience is so stupid as to not believe their own eyes.
Anyways, he’s a bruin now so Edwards will be singing a completely different tune. The biggest homer in history will not show an ounce of spine and continue to criticize him. He’ll probably end up wearing pouliot pyjamas to sleep at night. Afterall, he’s in black and gold now.
Pouliot will not do well in Boston unless there’s a longterm injury to a top 2 line guy so he can fill in. He needs the minutes and he’s not really a banger for the lower 2 lines.
I seem to remember Pouliot complaining pretty early in the season that he wasn’t being given enough top line ice time. Sounds like he’s doing it again here. Not sure I like the sound of that at all. Nor am I sure things are going to be much different for him in Boston. But I will trust PC and CJ.
Not sure now is a great time to do any trading, no matter how attractive Yandle is. The price of quality D-men seems way past ridiculous at the moment.
RD, was Jack Edwards wrong about Pouliot?
Ok.. forget the Pouliot drivel… lets talk Yandle! Anyone know the RFA penalty for signing him? Wondering what it will cost to pry his rights away. I know you all said I was crazy, but the Yotes still need a netminder and we’ve got 2 very good ones, and a potential backup now signed for 2 years in Khudobin.
I’m drooling again…
If Spooner nor Sauve can make the move then Pouliot will ride with Bergy. This is where I’m optimistic playing Marchand -Bergeron. He might even mesh with Seguin.
It’s Bemoit’s move or he’s on the waiver wire.
GR90 – where did you hear that? I would love to see Keith Yandle in a spoked B. Let Kaberle go, then go get a guy who put up 59 points from the blue line. Not to mention he is from Boston, and played at Cushing Academy…
If the Yotes are trading rights to Yandle I would love to see Chia jump on that one. I suspect he would be pretty content to sign with Boston too.
As for Pouliot-I don’t really care for him, but that could be colored a bit by his time as a Hab. He is pretty cheap and the contract short enough that it seems like a worthwhile risk.
I can actually see some benefit in signing him-but I agree that I would kind of like to see some of the young guys from Providence get some NHL ice time.
Player personality aside, Pouliot fills a B’s need at low cost, a left wing, with NHL experience.
Training camp should be interesting this season.
Pouliot is a high-ceiling player… I’m sure Chia thinks that some time with Doug Houda will make this guy into a better two-way presence. If RD is right about Pouliot getting knocked off the puck easily, that’s bad news… Bruins are a puck possession team, at their best while cycling down low and being patient. They can’t afford to have a softie doing work down there… we’ll see how it goes I guess.
In other news, I heard PHX is contemplating trading the rights to Keith Yandle. Hmm…..
Happy to have your input on this one, RD. Didn’t seem like a very popular guy in MTL (fan-wise or the coach’s eyes), and I don’t think its gonna work here for him, either. Maybe CJ can work some magic, but honestly I am pulling for the kids (Arniel, Caron, Sauve, etc.) to tear it up and nab Pouliot’s spot before we break camp.
Very weird signing. He’s not a particularly popular player. He gets knocked off the puck VERY easily, spends most of the game on his butt.
On top of it, he beat the shit out of Krejci and balked at fighting Lucic and tried to head shot either siedenburg or Boychuck (can’t remember).
He’s got a great shot, good moves though and was a 4th pick overall.
I wonder what that idiot Jack Edwards will say about him now that he’s a bruin. Remember all that personal stuff Edwards was saying during the broadcast? Maybe Benoit and Jack could have a little 1 on 1 to discuss it.
I agree with rek somewhat
If nothing else, this is an interesting signing. IMO what it takes to fit in with this organization is the desire to compete, toughness, making a contribution to the team and just having chemistry. Just show up and have some heart. Based on his comments, I’d say this guy could stand to losen up a bit. Be smart, be tough, play your game. It is what it is after that.
F#$k this guy, trade hime for a skate sharpener now
..He wasn’t a Hab long enough,so I don’t see any problem with him fitting in…does have some size and skill..one of those subtle little moves that might pay huge dividends…P.C. is sta it again..
This confuses me somewhat. I don’t see him being on the NHL roster given the already deep forward group, and the youngsters trying to crack the lineup
I’m going out on a limb and stating that he won’t fit in. Ryder never really did, Begin certainly did not, and Benoit is a Hab at heart. His first dive in black and gold will be soundly boo’d by the Bruins fans.
at least he’s not russian.
reading between the lines, or did pouliot hate being a hab? interesting choice of words….
