The Bruins today acquired defenseman Joe Corvo from Carolina in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.
Corvo, 34, is signed through the end of 2011-12 at a cap hit of $2.25 million. He is a right-handed shot with puck-moving ability who put up 40 points (11 goals) on a weak Hurricanes team last season.
This makes up for the Bruins’ loss of Tomas Kaberle, who signed a three-year contract worth a reported $12.75 million with those same Hurricanes (as reported by TSN.ca). The Kaberle family has a solid history with Carolina, as Tomas’ brother Frantisek was a member of the Hurricanes Stanley Cup-winning team in 2006.
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli and Corvo will be on a conference call with the media later this evening.

I like this move upgrade over Kaberle and he competes every night great job my Bruins management
We definitely did need another big RH shot on the PP.
Corvo will have to change his ways now’.

Excited to see a new look on the PP.
Jim, wasn’t that 10 years ago?…you comment as if it was yesterday. Anything new on his yellow sheet?
In Corvo’s case he was convicted of punching and then kicking a woman when she was down. A guy with a not so wonderful past.
I can’t believe some of the reactions. It is almost as if people forget how brutal Kaberle was in 50 games. Corvo is faster, actually hits people and is arguably better on the PP because he actually shoots. Oh, and he has the experience to play 25 mins per game. This is a shrewd move and an excellent one.
Good luck to Carolina with that guy. I can’t wait to play them now with that doofus on defense.
Now all I have to do is forget that Chia traded so much to get him and then he did nothing.
Jim, I don’t see him as “sketchy”…he won’t play the 24 minutes a game for the B’s like he did with the Canes…more a 3rd D-pairing and PP guy that has a “shot” and takes advantage of it.
This is the second “sketchy” charachter the Bruins have brought in this off season.
I know a lot of people didn’t like Kaberle but is Corvo the same kind of defenseman? PMD/PP specialist that can have trouble in the defensive zone and will give up turnovers? Only difference being I think he shoots a lot more.
Corvo is somewhere between Wideman and Kaberle in the irresponsibility by PMD zone as far as I can tell. He doesn’t have too many “adventures” but does have his fair share. Hopefully we keep him with sides who is magnificent as a stay at home defender, which will help both. Really like that this gives our young guys a chance to crack the roster and play as a transition until one of them is solid enough to no longer need Corvo.
LOVE IT!!!

Where I, yes I alone, not Carnac predicted this move in the comments.
How could you not be happy about this move? No more Kaberle, plus Corvo had 40pts last season with 23 of them on the PP!!!!
Sure he was a -14 last season but he was on Carolina and 2nd on the team in ice-time and got more ice-time than Eric Staal who finished -10!!!
Thanks, Tomas; and good riddence.
$4.25m / yr for kabby? yikes!!!
corvo won’t be -14 pairing with z, sides or af.

It’s a really good point about PC’s foresight. And I have to believe guys like Krejci notice and appreciate that the groundwork is already being laid.
Great move! Too much $ for the Bruins and I agree. Great move to get Corvo at half the price of Kaberle and only one year. This gives Chia cap flexability at the end of next season and allows Kampfer, Bartkowski or any other young D to compete for a spot. Well played sir!
I completely agree. Resigning him at that price would have not sat well with me at all.
I can’t say I am going to love either of these players, but Chiarelli did was he could to replace players without creating a cap situation for next year. Smart move IMO and shows why he is a pretty savvy GM.
I also think the Bruins do have some talent in the wings and by not overcommitting money to UFA’s it gives those younger players a shot at making the team.
I suspect Chia may try to get the cap in a situation where the team can carry a couple or so extra d-men and forwards as healthy scratches/replacements for injured players compared to last year where the cap was such that most of the season we couldn’t carry many extra.
And no team ever goes without any injuries. I am kind of looking forward to seeing what young players make the roster and how they do when they get a chance to dress.
Good enough move for me. Can’t say I ever really warmed to Kaberle all that much. I can say I would have had steam coming out of my ears if we’d signed him at that price.
It seems like PC trying to replace the guys they are letting go with players who could fill the same role, but less talented and make less money. Pouliot could pull a “Ryder” and be better after leaving a team and getting a fresh start, Corvo could replace some of the offense Kaberle contributed (he did get 11 points in the playoffs). The risk of less talented players vs the reward of financial security….I like it.
Andrew, that is the key – They didn’t commit to anyone long-term. Couldn’t have asked for anything better than a one-year term. This is awesome. If they had signed Kabs to 3 years, they couldn’t play in the next FA market. Not that I am a huge Corvo fan or anything, but I really like this play.
One more quality winger, please!
Seidenberg makes $3.25M a year, so I think anything more than that and there’s a risk of upsetting chemistry. Kaberle was a #5 D-man at best for the Bruins, so there’s no way PC could justify paying him more than our #2 Seidenberg. Plus Kaberle was too soft — and that’s what bothered me more than anything.
I have a question for Matt though… what D pairing was Corvo on in Carolina? I assume he’d be on our 2nd pair at best, but his -14 rating last year might be scewed by him matching up against the opponents 1st or 2nd line? Or so I hope.
Also, I really expect that they may be considering what they can do with their guys coming up.
By not overcommitting they are giving them a chance to play. I still think the team needs a strong second pairing d-man, but I think that person comes through trade when the team thinks they can afford the cost and are willing to pay it.
Meh. Decent stop gap, the term and price are good as well. What I like about this move is the flexibility it leaves us moving forward; lock that core up, PC!
4+ for Kabby is a ton for a team like Carolina… good luck with that!
With this move, the Bruins (in my estimation) achieved exactly what they wanted to.
1) Not necessarily a clear upgrade or downgrade from Kaberle, but a guy who can potentially help the transition game and provide some offense on the back end. This is PC taking another crack at filling that PMD void. Hopefully it works out better than Theo’s attempts to find a shortstop.
2) The B’s avoided getting locked into a long-term deal with a defenseman they weren’t totally sold on to begin with. That sentiment, I believe, goes for Kaberle as well as every FA D-man out there that they had any shot at getting.
3) Avoiding said long term deal/higher cap-hit will allow PC some flexibility moving forward, whether its utilized at the deadline or during next off-season.
And I think the best thing about this deal is that the contract is through the end of next season.
Chia is bargain shopping to make sure he has the money at the end of next season to keep the key players who are hitting RFA or UFA and due pay raises.
Not left holding the bag on getting some O from the D. Good move.
I admit I had started to expect Kaberle back for next season.
I am okay with this result though.
Great news!!! I’m doing the “Snoopy Jig” …no more Kaberle articles…WOOHOO!
