The Bruins today acquired defenseman Joe Corvo from Carolina in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.

Corvo, 34, is signed through the end of 2011-12 at a cap hit of $2.25 million. He is a right-handed shot with puck-moving ability who put up 40 points (11 goals) on a weak Hurricanes team last season.

This makes up for the Bruins’ loss of Tomas Kaberle, who signed a three-year contract worth a reported $12.75 million with those same Hurricanes (as reported by The Kaberle family has a solid history with Carolina, as Tomas’ brother Frantisek was a member of the Hurricanes Stanley Cup-winning team in 2006.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli and Corvo will be on a conference call with the media later this evening.
