Report: Defenseman Dodero will join Bruins as camp tryout

NHL teams are always looking for help on defense, and the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins are no different.

According to NorthernLife.ca, the Bruins will have a young defenseman who’s originally from Illinois in camp next month on a tryout basis at training camp to see if he can be part of their future.

Charlie Dodero, who’ll turn 19 on Oct. 1, has been invited to Bruins training camp, which starts Sept. 16 with physical and medical testing in Boston.

Dodero is listed at 6-foot-1, 188 pounds. In 66 games last season, he put up 2-13-15 totals and a minus-3 rating.

Sudbury coach Blaine Smith had this to say about Dodero to a NorthernLife.ca staff writer:

Charlie is one of our hardest working players both on and off the ice. Charlie is a very positive person and his energy and passion for the game rubs off on other players. Charlie deserves to attend an NHL camp and we are pleased that the Bruins are giving him that opportunity.

Sounds like he’ll fit right in, even if his stay with Boston lasts just a couple weeks. And maybe like Marc Cantin, who was in camp as a tryout last fall and earned a contract by spring while playing in the OHL, Dodero can make relationships this fall that will pay off down the road.
