BOSTON — Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli told TheBruinsBlog.net (serving as a conduit for the Boston Herald) this morning that he has not ruled out carrying the maximum amount of players allowed — 23 — when camp breaks next week.
The roster must be set by 3 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
The Bruins practiced today at TD Garden with 27 players. The line combinations were as follows:
Lucic-Krejc-Horton
Marchand-Bergeron-Peverley
Paille-Campbell-Clark
Pouliot-Kelly-Caron
A fifth line consisted of Thornton, Seguin, Sauve and MacDermid
The eight remaining defensemen are Chara, Seidenberg, Boychuk, Ference, McQuaid, Corvo, Kampfer and Bartkowski. It’s widely believed that Kampfer and Bartkowski are competing for the seventh D spot.
When asked if players who came to camp already with a job were in the clear in terms of making the roster or being in the lineup, Chiarelli declined to comment.
More later.

a little late on this comment i suppose but Stanley cup trumps all trades and their return, lack there of, or how a pick or prospect turns out in the nhl 10 years from now. so, colborne who? for that matter, kaberle who?
Agreed on Bartowski, TCL.
I don’t think Seguin is getting snubbed, I think the Bruins are smartly exploring their other options. Based on his preseason so far, I would think he’s pushing for the 2nd line job and at least earned a shot at being 3rd line center. That said, if they have a decent handle on where they want Seguin, why shouldn’t they check out the ones who may or may not make camp?
I definitely think Seguin is going to end up centering the third line. I think the team wants to develop him there and I think he tends to play better at center than at wing.
I generally think the first two lines are mostly set-same KHL line with Peverly moved to Bergeron’s wing-which leaves the rest of the guys competing for the third line wing positions and the healthy scratch 13th/14th forward positions. I suspect they go with just one extra d-man since none of the young defensemen have to clear waivers between Boston and Providence-I think even though Bargkowski appears to have had a good camp Kampfer’s 38 NHL games last season will give him the edge and he makes the 7th d-man on the team.
Why are they messing around with Seguin? They need to replace 35 goals with Recchi and Ryder gone. The 35 won’t come from Pouliot.
sorry about the last comment, too much beer
where’s pouliot
Colborne = No defense, no agressiveness, no skating legs to his game = may always be on the outside looking in…
My bad. I wasnt’ thinking about the roster I was counting the bodies at practice and thinking about the rest of the pre-season until cut dates. I lost it.
TCL
I agree I can’t see Paille or Kelly being cut. I think McDermid, Sauve, and Bartkowski are sent down, although Sauve has looked pretty good.
BK
I think the surprise, for some, is Pouliot is a healthy scratch, at the start of the year anyways. I think Caron makes the squad on the third line. I think the last exhibition game showed that Seguin should play centre. It gives him more space to operate and he looked Good. I think you need someone with him, like Caron or Clark, who will go to the heavy traffic areas. The other winger should have some speed and a strong passer.
I think the Bruins have looked good in preseason, and I with other nifty by saying that I can’t wait for the season to start.
Hey what happened to Jared Knight. I thought he had a chance to make this team. Anyone?
Nifty- That’s awful math.
23 man roster — 2 goalies
So there are 24 skaters competing for 21 open skater spots — 3 guys need to be cut.
MK
Three of the twenty-seven are goalies so that leaves only one guy getting demoted if they keep twenty-three. So Sauve or Macdermid will probably be on the outside. They’ve both played well though and have done what is expected.
Interesting developments in the last 24 hours.
MCK, I don’t think Seguin is getting snubbed here…I think it’s ‘more’ evaluation of centers and wings by Julien and the coaches. As long as Peverley keeps doing the job on the RW with Bergy’s line is there a reason for change?
Personally,I would like to see Seguin center his own line.
IMO, Pouliot is an experiment. Caron, Clark and Sauve have looked and played better.
As “Paul” commented yesterday…tough decisions for the B’s management and the coaching staff this preseason.
Is Seguin seriously not in on those lines? Seriously? Seguin is a 5th liner? Really? I could settle for putting him with Kelly and Caron. He should be with Bergeron and Marchand. I like Peverley a lot, so that is a tough call, but I would go Seguin there.
The Pouliot signing seems stupid now the way Clark has performed.
I don’t think Paille or Kelly will get cut.
Not to say there may not be some surprises, but I don’t think releasing Paille or Kelly is going to be one of them.
Could we see a suprise cut/release for the bruins here in the next week?? (Paille or Kelly)?
I would really like to see Caron make the team (and stick around) this year. But at the same time, I can’t deny what Clark can bring in terms of veteran leadership. Looks like it will be an interesting next week or so in terms of the roster.
Unrelated Comment: Interesting to see that Colborne didn’t even make it to the final cut in Toronto. Maybe that Kaberle trade will be a wash after all?
