Bruins 2010 second-round pick Jared Knight is going to have a little more responsibility this season during what should be his last year in London.
The OHL’s Knights yesterday named Knight as one of their permanent alternate captains for the 2011-12 season.
Knight, who is entering his fourth season with London and skated in three games for Boston’s Providence (AHL) farm club last season, has shown a desire to add leadership duties to his role on the team he scored 25 goals and 70 points for last season.
Even before he left for Bruins training camp, Knight was paired off with prized London prospect Max Domi, the son of former NHL star Tie, as roommates. Knight and Domi are both diabetic, so they’ll be able to lean on one another in that regard this season.
In addition, Knight can lend Domi some veteran advice while practicing serving as a mentor for a possible role in the Bruins’ organization as not just a power forward but a player others look up to.
“For me, it’s my fourth year in the league, in the OHL. So I kind of have to lead him,” Knight told me last month during rookie camp. “It’s his first year and I remember what it was like coming into the league and I was a little scared and a little timid out there. So I’m just telling him to have fun with it and it goes by pretty quick, so just enjoy it.”
For those wondering, Knight has had time to chat with Max’s dad Tie about life as an NHLer. Any amount of extra toughness that could rub off from Tie Domi, an eight-time 200-plus-PIM player in his day, can only benefit Knight the same way his words and actions will benefit the younger Domi.
