Seguin’s hat trick leads Bruins past first-place Leafs

Seguin/By S. Bradley
If there was a Sophomore of the Year award in the NHL, Bruins forward Tyler Seguin would be the early leader.
He added to his second-season spectacular start with three goals tonight for his first NHL hat trick in a 7-0 rout of Toronto tonight.
The Bruins started the night last in the Eastern Conference, while the Maple Leafs were first. By early in the second period you would’ve been hard-pressed to pick out which team was slumping and which was hot.
The Bruins scored two goals in eight seconds early in the second, added two more in 14 seconds later in the period and scored twice in 28 seconds int the third.
Seguin was one of four players with three points, joining David Krejci, Milan Lucic and Patrice Bergeron. Joe Corvo was plus-4.
The Bruins held the league’s leading scorer Phil Kessel point-less for the second time this season. This time, he fired two shots on goal — doubling his shot total from the first Bruins-Leafs matchup.
Tim Thomas recorded the shutout with 25 saves.
You’re right PD – They probably don’t make that trade without the Leaf pick. What a bounty!
@Bojangles, and to add to your point if you really want to get down to it the trade also gave the B’s the chance to trade away their own first rounder in 2010 to Florida in a package(remember Dennis Wideman?) that saw Horton and Campbell come the other way. So this deal really is the gift that keeps on giving.
Yuckster, pretty sure that after the Penner saga, Burkie wouldn’t want to put another gm through the headach. I thunk it’s also why we haven’t seen too many rfa offers since.
Anyone else watching the Stars beat up on the Canes?
Wow, of course I meant Burke traded for Phil.
Can someone explain why Burke traded for Seguin, rather than sign him as an RFA? Signing would have cost 1st, 2nd, 3rd round pics rather than two ones and that second.
Here’s an article about Scrivens from the Reading Royals site…it also offers a chance to see the B’s goalie Karel St.Laurent and forward Yannick Riendau in action this p.m.

Robbie – You’re on it. What made Seguin’s second goal so awesome, wasn’t simply that he picked it out of the air – or that he picked it on his backhand and found the corner. Sure – its a demonstration of the same jaw-dropping raw talent that left us all salivating for more in his freshman season – And its that raw talent that bodes so well for Seguin having a great NHL career. But what bodes well for The BRUINS (as a team), is that he fought for that puck – stripped a turn-over, not by jumping a lane, but with tenacity – and then was able to actually kick-pass to Bergy to start the rush.
Its the work that preceeded the goal by Seguin that has me feeling really good about the Bs future as a team, and has to have Claude feeling vindicated.
One more thing about the Kessel trade – and this goes to PC entirely – Not only did we end up with potentially 3 top-end talents for one, but it appears we also traded one questionable character that no-shows again and again for big games, with 3 high character guys that seem to have the Oofspa it takes to show when the spotlight is on.
As a Bs fan – could this have worked out any better?
It seems we are reaping the rewards of Julien’s keeping a tight hold on the reins last year with Seguin. Seguin has clearly bought into the idea of playing a responsible all around game…when he was aggressively digging in the corner on one play and standing up in the neutral zone to force a turnover on another (leading to a goal shortly after) the contrast with Kessel’s tendency to float around away from the play was glaringly obvious. I doubt we’d be seeing this effort or production if Seguin had been allowed to only focus on offense as a rookie, as the popular wisdom demanded. It’s really a treat to see.
I’m so happy that Caron appears to have his confidence back as well. I’ve long been a fan of the hard-nosed side of his game when he’s shown flashes of it in the past. I have nothing against Pouliot, but if Caron locks the spot down for good (which, I know is premature after a couple of good games) I won’t miss him.
Bruins16, Yep, CJ is showing his confidence and Caron is responding. He looked good during his PK time tonight.
Pierre B.
I agree that Jared Knight will be a Bruin in the not too distant future. I think his chances are better than Spooner’s.
Cormac
I’d like to see more point production, from Caron as well. However, he is going to the front of the net so the points should come. He does back check which will win him points with C.J.
Anyone recall people being down on Stamkos after his rookie season? Spent the year with the Wreckin Ball and blew up sophmore season. Hmmm…
Great w!
Anyone else noticing the new set up on the pp? More of a diamond formation. One point man high in the middle, two outlets between the top of the circles & the dots, one screener, & a rover (Seguin tonight). Versus the stale a$$ umbrella/overload. I’ve seen it a few times this season so far, & it’s been productive pretty consistantly, including tonight.
A backhand bat-out-of-mid-air in to the top corner goal?!? Are you serious! That goal was beyond ridiculous. Thank You Kessel!!
Yukster – don’t forget Jared Knight, too. 16 points in 15 games with London Knights. It’s possible all 3 could be on the roster next year. That would make for fun watching during Leafs games.
Seguin’s second goal = a “bat-trick”. Thank you Kessel!
What a B’s shellacking of the Leafs in their barn! Enjoyed Seguin’s 2nd goal.
Bruins16, Caron is fitting in with the B’s. Looking forward to see him begin scoring.
This Tyler Seguin KoolAid is delicious! I am now drinking it and am a believer.
At the beginning of the season, I had my doubts. No longer. Even trading Kessel for Seguin straight up is a win for Boston, to say nothing of Hamilton.
Thank you Kessel.
Good for Tyler! Either him or Bergeron were the best players on the ice for the B’s tonight. Glad to see Caron stand up for Kelley, when Phaneuf left his feet to hit Kelley. Caron looked more like a Bruin tonight than ever before, not just with Phaneuf, but he seemed better along the boards. I hope I won’t be reading any messages for awhile on how Lucic needs to be traded. Might have been Tim’s easiest shut-out ever. Looked like old times tonight!
