NHL makes McQuaid a little lighter in the wallet

Most weren’t debating whether Adam McQuaid would get a suspension for his knee-on-knee hit on Nick Foligno Wednesday night, just how many games the Bruins defenseman would get.
Well, today McQuaid was let off basically with a warning.
The Boston blueliner was fined $2,500 by the NHL for the hit, which happened late in the second period of the Bruins’ 5-2 win. McQuaid received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the play. His former junior teammate Foligno left the game briefly, but returned and wasn’t injured.
Without an explanation from NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, we can only assume that McQuaid’s lack of a history of bad hits helped his cause in avoiding a ban. His mullet and Darth Quaider powers probably helped out as well.
So McQuaid will be available to face Philadelphia Saturday in the battle of the Eastern Conference’s top two teams. The Bruins had today off and they’re scheduled to practice Friday in Ottawa before heading to Philly.

As far as the Cam/Ulf hit goes I remember hearing an interview with Cam where he said that the famous low blow open ice hit wasn’t the one that actually caused all the damage. He said that people seem to believe that but in fact it was another hit from another game that really did the lasting damage. It was still Ulf but it was more of a situation where Ulf turtled and Cam took the full force of his own weight and momentum on his thigh. Because it isn’t Cams knees that are the problem. It has to do with the muscles in his thighs building up calcium deposits. The same thing happens to gymnasts from the uneven bars. I believe its called ossification or something? Violent and repeated impacts to the large muscles cause the soft tissue to harden trying to heal. And hard muscles don’t stretch and move which causes the surrounding joints to fail. I guess the Irony is that Adam didn’t catch Foligno’s knee at all..he caught him in the thigh. Either way I think Quaider dodged a bullet with the fine.

Didn’t know about the fine rule either. I would have thought the fine higher, but not a suspension. Suspensions seem reserved for intent to injure – McQuaid’s move was total reaction and it’s easily seen.
Didn’t know that about the CBA
The play doesn’t remind me of Ulf v. Cam at all. Ulf was trying to hurt Neely and it wasn’t an instinctive play by Ulf. McQuaid stuck his leg out out of pure instinct it seemed to me, with zero intent to injure. Thankfully, Foligno was not hurt.
MCK – The fine might seem light, but it is actually the maximum allowable fine under the current CBA.
I’m surprised by the decision but I haven’t been right on any of Shanahan’s decisions since the pre-season ended. It seems he’s lost a lot of his mojo.
Still, it was a pretty bad impact so I highly doubt Foligno was faking anything.
Clemens, you make an interesting point about Seabass. My gut tells me that people will always see things differently from the other side of the coin…(or however the saying goes)

I was really surprised too. I thought the Shanaban was coming for sure.
I was very surprised by the lack of a suspension. I though it was a no-brainer. But hey, I’m not complaining, we definitly need him, especially if big Z isn’t 100% yet. But I do wonder how Cam “Seabass” Neely feels about that play. Ulf flashbacks?
my only shock was foligno not missing a shift after the hit. refs don’t like being duped and made the goalie interference call to break up the 5 min pp.
