For the Bruins, the future is now.
That doesn’t mean that Tim Thomas isn’t going to be the No. 1 goaltender for the long haul. But Tuukka Rask has proven this season that he can be a serious challenger to Thomas’ role and that there’s no more need to wait for Rask’s development.
Last week, Rask beat Phoenix in overtime in his lone start during Boston’s 1-1-0 week. For his efforts, readers of TheBruinsBlog.net voted Rask as the Bruin of the Week:
Who should be the Bruin of the Week?
- Tuukka Rask (52%, 44 Votes)
- Dennis Seidenberg (25%, 21 Votes)
- David Krejci (24%, 20 Votes)
Total Voters: 85
Heading into tonight’s game in New Jersey, Rask leads the NHL in goals-against average (1.61) and save percentage (.945). The goal he allowed in that win over the Coyotes snapped a shutout streak of more than 170 minutes, which included consecutive shutouts of Florida and Los Angeles.
Rask has won four straight starts and four of his last five to improve to 8-4-1 on the season. While Thomas has been playing at an equally high level, his numbers don’t match Rask’s right now. The battle between the two goaltenders should rage on throughout the rest of the season, and the Bruins will reap the rewards of the competition.
