It looks like Boston’s most-beloved hockey-playing adopted son will be sticking around a little longer.
According to several reports, Shawn Thornton is going to forgo unrestricted free agency and sign an extension with the Bruins.
Thornton has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal, which was originally reported by Craig Custance of ESPN.com. TSN reports the deal is worth $1.1 million per season. Thornton could have tested the open market starting July 1.
Since joining the Bruins, Thornton has endeared himself to the Hub not only by typifying toughness and even scoring the occasional goal but also by moving into Charlestown full-time and living in Boston year round. His sense of humor and frequent appearances on various media outlets have made him even more of a fan favorite.
The Bruins do not have practice or availability scheduled for Sunday after beating Philadelphia today. They’ll undoubtedly have an official announcement coming up soon.
He took a hometown discount. He’s regarded as the most versatile enforcer in the league at the moment.
Best legitimate signing in a long time you knoe exactly what you get with Thorny and money will not go to his head. He follows in a long line of hard playing B players that show up every night with half the natural talent of most of the other players on the team. This guy does it through smarts, will, and desire to help his team. He has and will continue to be a very important player for the B’s inside and outside the rink.
