The Bruins felt the wrath of the Sharks.
When the Bruins returned from Florida and their 0-3-0 road trip last week, they made sure that after their afternoon arrival they hit the ice to get their legs going. That strategy paid off in a matinee victory over Philadelphia the next day.
Out on the West Coast, the Bruins had the same sort of idea yesterday, as they practiced after arriving in San Jose. But this time the travel-then-practice approach didn’t pay off.
The Bruins looked like they still left most of their zeal on the cross-country charter tonight, as they were outshot by the Sharks, 27-17, and dropped a 2-1 decision in the first game of their three-game visit to California. The 17 shots by the Bruins were a season-low.
Only Zdeno Chara’s awkward bank shot off San Jose goaltender Antti Niemi prevented Boston from being shut out. Amazingly, the Sharks have now scored three or less goals in 19 straight games, yet they are still very much alive in the Western Conference playoff race.
•Joe Pavelski, who scored against the Bruins in the Sharks’ October win, scored the first San Jose goal tonight just 3:57 into the game. He took advantage of a rebound of a Patrick Marleau shot.
But the sequence started with Milan Lucic’s ill-advised breakout pass to the center of the San Jose zone, where Joe Thornton made a steal and got the Sharks’ offense going. One Chara giveaway later and San Jose then solved Tim Thomas.
Lucic was pedestrian all night with one shot on net in 18:28 of ice time and a minus-2 rating.
•In an effort to spark the Lucic-David Krejci duo, Bruins head coach Claude Julien moved Tyler Seguin up the depth chart for the third period and dropped Jordan Caron back down with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. The promotion of Seguin sparked the Bruins offensively earlier this month but that trio proved to be a defensive liability. It didn’t take long for that threesome to surrender a goal, as Daniel Winnik cashed in on a 3-on-2 for a 2-0 San Jose lead 2:17 into the last stanza.
Boston had been on its own 3-0n-2, but Seguin’s weak attempt to one-time Krejci’s drop pass was easily broken up and turned the other way by Andrew Desjardins. Yes, the Sharks’ fourth line scored against the Bruins’ first line, with Winnik scoring his first goal since Dec. 15, when he was still with Colorado.
•Thomas was clearly in playoff mode with several Superman-like saves. His best of the night was a sort of two-pads-stacked stop on Martin Havlat on a 2-on-1. Thomas also had several big saves late in the game to keep the Bruins within one goal.
•The lone Boston goal, off the stick of Chara, was the product of more excellent play from the hot line of Chris Kelly centering Brian Rolston and Benoit Pouliot. With an assist on the goal, Rolston now has a four-game point streak with 2-6-8 totals over that time. That line was credited with four shots on net.
•Boston has now lost four in a row on the road in regulation. This is the Bruins’ first such stretch since they lost five straight in regulation Feb. 21-March 15, 2009.
•The Bruins failed on their one power-play opportunity of the night against the team with the league’s worst home penalty kill. They managed just one shot on net during that man-advantage. They also had one shot during the late-game 6-on-5.

The Rolston debate on who sits isn’t over. When Peverly comes back there will be many ways to go. It may a situation just to give nights to some players, or it may for another reason. One thing that is apparent is the fact that the Lucic, Krejci, and Seguin line has its shortcomings when it comes to defence. However, none of these players will sit, unless it is for just a night off to heal or rest. Of Paille, Caron, Rolston, and Pouliot, when it comes to defence, Pouliot is the weakest. I think Paille is the best when it comes to defence/checking. Caron is the most physical and Rolston has the most experience. Pouliot has shown flashes of good offence, but I would pick him as my guy to sit if everyone is healthy.
All our bantering/blogging may go for nothing because of an injury.
aduh i think the Rolston debate is what? over?
Bruins16…Awesome! We have a landmark here called the Sir Sanford Fleming tower (the time zone guy ironically) or Dingle Tower. It has been having the stonework re-pointed and it was covered with scaffolding and white tarps about a 100 feet high. After the SC win it was painted with a huge spoked B. It was a truly beautiful thing.

The good thing about Hab fans is that they very quiet this year. May they have many more seasons like the one just past. From the land of Johnny Mackenzie, Johnny Bucyk, Andrew Ferrence, and Johnny Boychuk, may the B’s repeat. Here’s a good one that some of the B’s fans did in my home town. After they won the Cup last spring, one paid for/put an ad in our local newspaper congratulated the Bruins on their Stanley Cup victory, but listed all the Hab fans he knew as being the well-wishers. Another B supporter put in a similar ad, but this time he listed all the Canuck fans he knew as the ones congratulating the Bruins. It was good fun!
Alberta Bruins fan here. It wasn’t the prettiest game by the Bruins. I Thought defensively they played decent. It was a bad second goal that Tim Thomas let in, but he really gave them a chance to come back in this game. Lucic was really bad this game, I think he’ll be angry with himself and play better next game. A lot of missing the net as well. I’m putting this one off as jet lag (hopefully) and look forward to a better performance in LA. Cheers.
MikeK…I am also from the land of Brad Marchand, Glen Murray and some guy named Crosby or something like that. Always good to know there are a few other Black and Gold faithful in this sea of Habs fans.
PatrickD: Game started for me too at 11:30, but I stayed up (luckily didn’t have to work today). Where are you from? I’m in Nova Scotia. Oh and for everyone else, Timmy is back…is he ever!
Great recap MK. The game actually starts at 11:30 for me on the east coast of Canada so there is no watching it live. I watched it on DVR in FF while I got me kid ready for school this morning. Its funny but you can tell a lot about a game watching in Fast Forward as the whole thing seemed to take place in Boston’s end of the ice. The rest of this trip is going to be even tougher I’m afraid. Hope they can grab a couple of points at least. What with the Sens playing the Habs tonight.
Thanks for a solid recap MK. Sad to say that 10:30pm starts are beyond me on school nights these days, but it is what it is.
Glad to hear TT looked good.
