Seguin/By S. Bradley
The Washington Capitals let the Bruins slip out of their fingers, and Tyler Seguin escaped his cage as well.
Now there’s no telling if the Bruins will be corralled again.
Seguin scored the game-winner 3:17 into overtime as the Caps failed to close out the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals in Game 6 today, and now the Bruins will host Game 7 Wednesday night at TD Garden.
The goal was Seguin’s second point of the game, as he assisted on Andrew Ference’s third-period goal with a shot on the rush off goaltender Braden Holtby’s mask. To beat Holtby on the clincher, Seguin darted toward the right side of the slot and waited for the rookie netminder to leave his feet before firing the puck into the open cage.
Seguin’s points were his first of the series. He skated on a line with Milan Lucic and David Krejci, who both enjoyed two-point days as well after recording just one assist apiece in the first five games. Krejci scored a power-play goal on a give-and-go with Lucic.
Krejci led the Bruins with five shots on net and also won 12 of 24 faceoffs. Prior to Seguin’s goal, Krejci knocked down Nicklas Backstrom’s pass at the red line and bumped it ahead to Lucic to start the winning play.
▪Krejci had to pick up a lot of slack on key faceoffs, as did Rich Peverley, because Patrice Bergeron was unable to take draws due to an upper-body injury from Game 6. Peverley won 13 of 24 draws and also notched a goal and an assist. He now has 3-2-5 totals in the last four games of this series and he has been by far Boston’s best forward in this series. Peverley skated 22:36 of ice time. He’s come a long way from the guy who looked rusty at the outset of the series as he continued to work his way back from a knee injury.
▪It should be noted as well that Bergeron won the only faceoff he took late in regulation with the score tied after an icing call.
▪While Bergeron was able to play, Joe Corvo did not. Mike Mottau filled in and skated just 9:21. He was a minus-1 because he was on the ice when Mike Green’s shot banked off Greg Zanon’s leg and beat Tim Thomas.
▪Krejci’s power-play goal late in the first period was crucial. But otherwise Boston’s man-advantage was a detriment. The Bruins failed to score or build momentum during a double minor early in the second, and Washington used that kill to turn the tide of the game. The Caps outshot Boston, 15-5, in the second. The Bruins also failed on a 4-on-3 that went from late in the second period to the early portion of the third.
The Bruins were 1-for-5 on the power and are now 2-for-20 in the series.
▪One has to assume Claude Julien will give Brad Marchand a long talking to about the speedy forward’s embellishment on a Jason Chimera non-call for interference before the Caps forward scored the tying goal with 42 seconds left in the second. Chimera and Marchand might’ve made some contact at the Washington blue line on the breakout, but not nearly enough to make Marchand pirouette like he did. Marchand was cut above his lip, but in the playoffs you’ve got to get up and get back in the play.
It didn’t help that Dennis Seidenberg’s broken skate prevented him from keeping Chimera covered on the rush up ice.
▪The Capitals only blocked 12 shots, a far cry from the more than 20 they’ve been getting on most nights.
▪I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that just 14 seconds before the winning goal, former Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman iced the puck from behind his own goal. He was also on the ice for Seguin’s score.
Zdeno Chara’s icing helped set up Alexander Ovechkin’s game-tying goal in the third, as well.

You said it BigJim. You must be listening to Felger beat this into everyone’s head as well. Your leading scorer not being out there for a 4-3 is mind boggling. I hope I eat my words but Pevs should not be in there over Seguin on that. Claude has a complete pants tent for Peverley tho so I’m not surprised.
dude. there is no sense in dressing thornton over caron or pouliot. i love thornton and what he brings but he’s limited at this point.
HOW ON EARTH DOES SEGUIN NOT PLAY ON THE 4-3 SITUATION?
absolutely bruins16.
i was actually at the game saturday so it was fitting corvo left that one.
hmmm, we’ve seen this before.
I give an edge to Boston going in to game 7.
Rookie goalie vs. seasoned defending cup champs. The intangibles favor Boston, especially since they slayed their ghosts last year.
As for Pouliot, I told you guys he was a mystery.
Fantastic to see Krecji/Lucic/Seguin end the game with that great rush. Nice to see all three of them really pick up their games in this one. I like that line a lot and think Peverley really fits in better w/ Bergy/Marshy anyway. Really got a kick out of Seguin shooting the puck off Holtbe’s mask and then admitting the kid has been stopping everything he shot to he tried it.
Mottau better be in over Corvo for good! His vision while shooting is just leaps above Corvo. He seems well in control while having the puck and made his shots in great places to be tipped while not getting blocked.
As for Caron, god I like this kid. He just plays the type of Bruins hockey I love to see. I will be honest tho as others have said, I don’t like it at the expense of Thorny tho. I would much rather see him on the third line and give Rols/Benny a break, but it’s hard to break up that line as well as they got you to this point in the series. I guess I would much rather be in this predicament then having a couple people on the ice you don’t want at all because of injuries.
See you all Wednesday for the showdown! I’ve been really waiting for the offensive outburst game we know they have hidden, let’s hope this is the turning point in the playoffs. Go B’s!
Bergeron is awesome. You could see all you needed to about him after he won that faceoff and then skated off the ice in pain. Almost got a game-winning deflection in OT too. Probably goes without saying, but I trust him more than any other Bruin not to let me down.
I was pretty mad at Pouliot too–stupid, stupid penalty–but I wouldn’t be so quick to sit him. He was one of the Bs top players in the first 2-3 games of this series.
Mottau looked pretty solid to me. I really liked a couple of the decisions he made when shooting it. They were nice and re-directable, and with a good chance for a rebound.
Meanwhile, Seguin lives! Krejci and Lucic too!
Oh and how could I forget number 37 are you kidding me. Dust off spot in the rafters that guy falls under “ultimate” Bruin what a gamer he is.
Great win !! Seguin is back he was really over due. I agree with b16 Poul out Thorton in. Caron skated with real fresh legs would give him a shot on the Kelly line. Last Mottau play fantastic for how little ice he see’s. I really think Timmy will be ultra sharp on Wensday it’s what he lives for.
Seguin needs to be spending more time on the PP instead of riding the pine during the man advantage.

What type of injury do you think Bergy has? He seemed pretty productive during the game, but only took one face-off. Back injury? or what else is stressed most during a face-off?
Hopefully Seguin/LucicKrejci have woken up rather than just had a flash of skill.
On that Marchand play, I actually thought he was going for a sneaky hit and just got the worst of it……Incredible backhand pass by Backstrom.
I was happy to see Caron in uniform, but not at the expense of Thornton. Thornton is the heart and soul of the B’s and should be dressed. Rolston is winning few battles along the wall and Pouliot is looking like his old Hab days, by taking penalties at the worst time. One of them could watch from the press box instead of Thornton or Caron.
Great game Ferrence! For some reason he always plays better with Boychuk. Good for Seguin and Lucic they kept their feet going and it paid off in the end.
Big Jim
Mottau’s play was better than Corvo’s has been, so far in the playoffs. I think he dresses next game over Corvo, whether Corvo is healthy or not.
