Two more depth signings as Bruins’ exciting summer continues

MacDermid
Keeping up their thrill-a-minute summer, the Bruins today announced two more signings to fill out their depth chart.
Forward Lane MacDermid, a restricted free agent, was re-signed, and journeyman defenseman Garnet Exelby was signed away from the Detroit organization.
Both players signed one-year, two-way contracts, according to the club’s press release.
MacDermid showed last season he could hold his own in the NHL during a five-game stint, which included a spirited fight with New York tough guy Mike Rupp. He’s most likely ticketed for Providence next season unless something happens to one of Boston’s fourth-line forwards. His signing leaves defenseman Matt Bartkowski as Boston’s lone remaining unsigned RFA.
Exelby hasn’t played in the NHL since 2009-10. Last season he skated in Grand Rapids of the AHL, after he played for Rockford the season before. He’s posted several seasons of 100-plus PIM and last year recorded eight fighting majors. General manager Peter Chiarelli said earlier this summer he wanted to ink a defenseman to a two-way deal, and now he has. The Bruins still look like their banking on Dougie Hamilton or Torey Krug rounding out their top six, which could be a dicey proposition for the long haul.
This ‘stand pat’ approach from a team that was one and done in the playoffs is alarming. The organization may lead the AHL in defensive depth, but these guys can be picked up in February off the waiver wire. Where’s the buzz? Look no further than the Pats for a template on how to stay competitive. This complacency blows.
