No surprise Bruins, Seguin beat deadline for new deal

It was as an informal deadline that everyone knew the Bruins and Tyler Seguin wanted to avoid during contract negotiations.
With the collective bargaining agreement set to expire Sept. 15, Boston’s No. 2 overall draft pick from 2010 and the team wanted to make sure that they wouldn’t be affected by any new clauses in the forthcoming CBA.
So today, one day after Seguin played coy about negotiations before teeing off at the team’s charity golf tournament, the Bruins revealed a new six-year extension worth $5.75 million per season for the forward. Seguin’s deal kicks in for the 2013-14 season after he plays the last year of his initial NHL deal this season, assuming there is one.
Seguin’s deal is comparable to his two draft-mates, Taylor Hall (7 years, $6 million per) and Jeff Skinner (6 years, $5.725 million per). Both players signed their extensions this summer as well.
You can argue that these players with just two or three years NHL experience have no business earning such huge pay raises and lengthy deals. But that’s where the market stands, and that’s one of the reasons we’re about to witness another lockout. Owners can’t help themselves from giving out these ludicrous contracts and they need givebacks from the players and a systems that saves them from themselves in order to keep the multi-billion-dollar NHL cranking out cash.
What’s more ridiculous? Paying big bucks to a budding superstar or big bucks to a fading superstar?

Bergy’s deal is up next year and I think he will make as much maybe more. Bergy’s game is more complete.

I think Hall’s days may be numbered. He plays with a little too much reckless abandon.
Pierre, you’ve got some time before you actually have to think about Seggy making more than Bergy. It’s important to remember that next season (if we’re lucky enough to have a season), Tyler will be making 3.55M or so.
I have a feeling you won’t feel quite so weird about Seggy making more than Bergy when he’s potting around 40 goals and 85-90 points, a couple of years from now.
So happy about this signing, I think the term and price are great.
Considering a guy like Grabovski recently signed for 5.5M (I like the player, but that’s steep), or how about Wideman making 5.25M…
There are many much worse deals that have been given to far more experienced players than those handed out to Skinner, Ebs, Hall, and Seggy. In fact, I would bet significant money that none of Rutherford, Tambellini, or Chiarelli will regret any of those four contracts.
In reality, nearly all professional athletes are grossly overpaid – most of us understand that – but based upon the market, and the current financial structure of the league, this contract seems great to me.
Love that 6 year term, hopefully we’ve got a lifer.
Love the deal. But feels weird that he’ll make more than Bergy.
Better and more durable than hall at this point, this is a good deal for the bruins. now turn him loose.
