Winter Classic memories
The temperature is supposed to touch 90 in Boston today, and the most exciting thing happening with the Bruins is an arbitration hearing in a Toronto court room to determine how rich Blake Wheeler is going to be after his disappointing sophomore NHL season.
In Pittsburgh, the NHL cognoscenti converged to officially announce the previously released news of the 2011 Winter Classic pitting Washington and the Penguins at Heinz Field next season on New Year’s Day.

2010 Winter Olympics: Goaltending a major focus for U.S.

Thomas
The USA Hockey orientation camp for the 2010 Olympic team wrapped up yesterday in Woodbridge, Ill. Today, a number of the writers that covered the event looked back at the festivities and looked ahead toward the Games, which are scheduled for February in Vancouver.
Obviously a position of importance for both the U.S. squad and the Boston Bruins is the goaltending spot, which should come down to a battle between the Bruins’ Tim Thomas and Buffalo’s Ryan Miller. Michael Farber of SI.com today wrote about the duo, which, which Farber writes gets “Team USA back at the adult’s table.” [Read more →]

Neely as anxious as players for Winter Classic

Neely
The question came from a reporter who’s frequently on the Boston Bruins beat to Hall of Famer Cam Neely yesterday after the press conference announcing the plans for the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park.
Could Neely hit the red seat in the Fenway bleachers with a slap shot?
“Not from home plate,” Neely quickly responded with a smile. [Read more →]

Bruins-Flyers Classic confrontation is Fenway-bound
BOSTON — Maybe you were buried under tons of Michael Jackson and Sarah Palin news or just had your nose in a book at the beach the last month or so. In that case, you were surprised to hear today during a press conference at Fenway Park that the venerable ballpark is going to host the NHL 2010 Winter Classic Jan. 1, 2010 with the Boston Bruins squaring off with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Despite what NHL commissioner Gary Bettman even admitted was the “worst-kept secret there is” the official announcement of the big-time matchup still did a lot to add to the excitement about a game that’s still six months away. From Mike “Doc” Emrick’s opening statements, complete with a quick description of every nook and cranny of Fenway to Bettman’s presentation of a commemorative hockey stick to Boston mayor Thomas M. Menino, the presentation was a home run and now the anticipation for one of the biggest sporting events in Boston sports history begins. [Read more →]

Thomas, Kessel invited to Olympic orientation

Thomas
Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas and right winger Phil Kessel were both officially invited to the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Orientation Camp today by USA Hockey. The camp will be held Aug.17-19 in Woodbridge, Ill., as an aid in choosing the members of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Vancouver in February.
“I was happy (when I got the call),” Thomas told TheBruinsBlog.net today via cell phone. “I found out through a message from (Olympic team GM) Brian Burke. My phone was out of range. I’m up here in Vermont and when I go out on the lake, my phone doesn’t work. So that’s how I found out.” [Read more →]

Jacobs figures Fenway Winter Classic is just an announcement away
Even his post as Chairman of the NHL Board of Governors doesn’t make Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs privy to official plans to bring the 2010 Winter Classic to Boston an earlier than the rest of us.
But to hear Jacobs tell it today, he’s pretty sure that the Hub and Fenway Park will be making hockey magic come New Year’s Day this winter.
“The Winter Classic is owned by the league. And it’s their production; it’s theirs to announce. I have to say that everything I’ve seen, acts like, smells like, looks like it’s going to be in Boston,” said Jacobs during a morning conference call. “I don’t know about anybody else that’s gone through all of the search and process that they’ve gone through. Traditionally, the league announces that in July.” [Read more →]

Boston “Winter Classic” not a done deal
BOSTON — All the hubub about the 2010 Winter Classic coming to Boston is a bit premature, at least according to Charlie Jacobs, Principal Boston Bruins & Delaware North Companies.
“Contrary to published reports, at this time we have not finalized plans for a Bruins game at Fenway Park on New Year’s Day,” Jacobs said in a statement today.”It is no secret that I would love to bring The Winter Classic to the City of Boston — and I have been working with the NHL to consider a number of venues in the area. We believe that we are close to accomplishing this. Bruins fans deserve to have an outdoor game, and we hope to deliver one to them in the near future.”
In a story on MLB.com written by Barry M. Bloom, NHL vice president of public relations Frank Brown would only say that Fenway Park is among the venues the league is looking at. [Read more →]
