WILMINGTON, Mass. — Without naming names, Bruins winger Daniel Paille responded today to a question about a teammates’ comments that the hit from Thursday night’s game that cost Paille a game misconduct and an ensuing four-game suspension was a “bad hit” and the type of play that the league is trying to take out of the game.

Had the Buffalo Sabres sat back at 2-2 in the third period and crossed their fingers for a shootout tonight, you couldn’t have blamed them.

Of course, Buffalo took advantage of a power play and then hung on for the 3-2 home over the Bruins, but without Boston’s shootout specialist Tyler Seguin in the lineup the Sabres, already 3-0 in shootouts this year, would’ve been heavily favored in the post-overtime spectacle.

WILMINGTON, Mass. — One day after Daniel Paille was called for boarding Atlanta rookie Alexander Burmistrov in the Thrashers’ win over the Bruins, the Atlanta winger didn’t practice and the Boston forward was accepting of the punishment he received.

He barely reached 10 goals in 74 games played for the Bruins last season, despite playing for stretches on lines centered by the likes of Patrice Bergeron and Marc Savard.

But Daniel Paille was a leading performer on Boston’s solid penalty kill last season, and general manager Peter Chiarelli believes the 26-year-old winger is capable of even more contributions. So the GM re-signed Paille to a two-year deal worth $1.075 million per season Thursday.

Officially, Daniel Paille joined Boston in October in the first-ever trade between the Bruins and Buffalo (the official classification of Peter McNab for Andre Savard in ’76 notwithstanding).

That wasn’t the only history made in that deal however. Paille’s arrival with the Bruins also gave backers of the boys in black and gold a new “Aww” player. You know the type. He has the speed and knowledge to get free for breakaways and golden opportunities only to miss the net or shoot the puck into the goaltender’s midsection and incite a collective “aww” from the hometown crowd almost every time.
