BOSTON — Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk, who scored five goals in 51 games last season, has scored just once in 46 appearances this year.

And while Boychuk told TheBruinsBlog.net this morning that he thinks his defensive game is sort of making up for his lack of production, head coach Claude Julien obviously disagrees.

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Bruins forward Shawn Thornton and defenseman Johnny Boychuk took a little guff from Canadian media types for taking on Roman Hamrlik and Jaroslav Spacek, respectively, toward the end of Boston’s 8-6 win over Montreal last night at TD Garden.

WILMINGTON, Mass. — The Bruins took Sunday off to rest up after suffering their first home defeat Saturday at TD Garden.

Today they got back to work at Ristuccia Arena, with Johnny Boychuk officially on the sidelines and David Krejci also among the missing. More on the center’s status after practice. The clock started on Boychuk’s four-week absence due to injury yesterday.

Even before the bad news about Johnny Boychuk came out tonight, I was getting a little worried about Zdeno Chara’s workload.

Now that Boychuk is definitely going to miss about a month with a fractured bone in his forearm, the Bruins captain and his five blue-line sidekicks are going to be pushed even more.

He hadn’t even re-signed with the Bruins yet, but potential unrestricted free agent Johnny Boychuk got a jolt from his team when the Bruins dealt defenseman Dennis Wideman out of town earlier this week.

“Maybe that sent a message to me that you better be ready to be a top-four guy. And even if I’m not, I want to play like I am,” said Boychuk.

Multiple news entities are reporting that the Bruins have re-signed defenseman Johnny Boychuk to a two-year deal. Boychuk would have become an unrestricted free agent July 1. There has been no official announcement from the team yet. The Bruins have made this official, as of 2:31 p.m. EST. (I will have more later.)

Pierre Lebrun of ESPN.com writes that Boychuk’s deal is worth $1.75 million this season and $2 million the year after — for a cap hit of $1.875 million over the course of the contract. The Bruins now have six defenseman under contract for next season, with Mark Stuart still scheduled to become a restricted free agent July 1.
