Bruin of the Week
He revealed himself as a team guy when it came to a new contract with the Bruins, and as a potential sniper in addition to his reputation as one of the game’s premier playmakers.
For his efforts during a 2-1-0 week for the Boston, Marc Savard is my Bruin of the Week. [Read more →]

Globe report: Savard signing not imminent
Boston Globe writer Kevin Paul Dupont reported yesterday that although there was an Internet report that Marc Savard was on the verge of signing a contract extension with the Bruins, a source said the “signing is not imminent.”
Dupont also reported that the deal could be a front-loaded contract worth around $32 million over seven years. Savard is in the last year of his original four-year deal (which was worth $20 million) and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Although he traveled with the team to Atlanta, Savard is not expected to play against the Thrashers. He has missed four weeks with a broken foot.

Another bad break for Bruins

Savard

Kessel will have to find his way without Savard

Savard
From the time Phil Kessel landed in Boston as a rookie, Bruins center Marc Savard took the teenager under his wing. The off-ice nurturing turned into awesome on-ice chemistry, as the two formed two thirds of the Bruins’ top line for most of the last season and a half.
So how will Kessel’s production be affected by the trade to Toronto, where there’s no Savard or really any player like him? [Read more →]

Welcome back: Marc Savard

Savard
Boston Bruins center Marc Savard says he loves Boston, and over the last three seasons fans in the Hub have come to love him. Of course, it helps that he has averaged 87 points per season and added enough defensive juice to his game to become a regular on the penalty kill. [Read more →]

Savard hasn’t soured on Team Canada chances
BOLTON, Mass. — Some players snubbed by their home country’s hockey federation might start looking into some sort of dual citizenship or defection in order to get into the mix for an Olympic team.
But Boston Bruins center Marc Savard explained today that although he was disappointed to not even receive an invitation to last month’s orientation camp by Hockey Canada, he’s still going to try to make the powers that be add him to the squad for this February’s Winter Games in Vancouver. Another Olympic snub for center Savard

Spezza
With center Joe Sakic retiring from active duty with the Colorado Avalanche and fellow pivot Ryan Getzlaf of Anaheim undergoing offseason surgery, Hockey Canada needed to add at least one more forward to its roster for its National Men’s Team orientation camp Aug. 24-28 in Calgary.
And Hockey Canada selected … Ottawa center Jason Spezza, not Boston Bruins playmaker Marc Savard.
Savard was also snubbed when the initial roster was released in late June. The camp will be held as a way for officials to evaluate players for this winter’s Olympic Games in Vancouver. [Read more →]

Savard should be in now that Sakic said so long

Savard
Colorado all-time great Joe Sakic’s retirement from playing after 20 seasons in the NHL has opened up a spot at the Hockey Canada orientation camp scheduled for next month in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Games.
Now it’s time for Hockey Canada to correct the error it made when it omitted Boston Bruins All-Star center Marc Savard on the first list of invitees last week and send him to Calgary. Just the fact that Savard has been among the league’s leading scorers the last five years and is arguably the most creative passer in the NHL should’ve earned him the nod right off the bat. But there are more reasons why Savard should replace Sakic. [Read more →]

SI says Team Canada could miss Savard

Savard
Around Boston, the surprising omission of Bruins center Marc Savard today from the list of players invited to Hockey Canada’s orientation camp for the 2010 Olympic team caused some outrage. But any doubt that the snub reverberated around the continent were eliminated today by Sports Illustrated Hall-of-Fame hockey writer Michael Farber in his SI.com column this afternoon.
In explaining why head coach Mike Babcock’s desire to have players who all play 200 feet but that Savard still should’ve been invited to camp, Farber writes: [Read more →]

2008-09 report card: Marc Savard
In every way, center Marc Savard just keeps rewarding the Boston Bruins for investing so heavily in him back in the summer of 2006. Once merely known as a playmaker, Savard has become a three-zone force with both fancy-pass ability and the skills to bury a puck or two when necessary.
While his production increased just four points from last season to this, Savard was a better all-around player by miles — witness his vital role in the Bruins’ much-improved penalty kill and his career-best plus-25 rating. With the game on the line, the Bruins always want Savard on the ice — no matter the situation — and more often than not he comes through. [Read more →]

Savard sore, wants to stay

Savard
Boston Bruins center Marc Savard will be in the last season of his four-year deal when the 2009-10 season opens. Barring a trade, he’ll be skating in black and gold. And he wouldn’t mind knowing that more seasons with Boston will be in the offing.
“I’d like to finish here. I really don’t want to move around anymore,” he said today. “I’m very happy here. I love the fans, I love the city. … I’m open to anything so we’ll see what happens.”
“I think it’d be nice for anybody to be able to do something like that,” he continued. “At the end of the day, I know I just have to wait and see.” [Read more →]

Savard suffered through the loss

Savard
BOSTON — Boston Bruins center Marc Savard had been incommunicado since he banged knees with Carolina winger Chad LaRose early in third period of Tuesday night’s Game 6 win in the Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Hurricanes.
And after tonight’s Game 7 loss he revealed why.
“They did a great job the last 36 hours or whatever I had to rehab it. I was in rehab all the time, just going at it and going at it,” said Savard, crediting the training staff for getting him ready to battle at TD Banknorth Garden. “They did a great job. I felt strong. Morning skate, I didn’t feel great. But then tonight I felt stronger as the game went on and better.” [Read more →]

Status quo on Savvy for Game 7

Savard
WILMINGTON, Mass. — The Boston Bruins didn’t practice this morning but instead opted for an off-ice workout here at Ristuccia Arena in the aftermath of their Game 6 win down in Raleigh that forced tomorrow night’s Game 7.
Center Marc Savard, injured in a collision with Carolina’s Chad LaRose last night in the third period, was not available to speak today. But head coach Claude Julien said the word on the playmaker is the same as it was last night after the game.
“It’s still the same as last night. I don’t anticipate any reason why he shouldn’t play,” said the coach.
As for the hit by LaRose, Julien was quick to throw water on any thoughts people have about it being a dirty play.
“I’m going to tell you right now, I know it’s Chad LaRose and everybody would like to think it was a dirty hit, but it wasn’t,” Julien said. “It was a collision. And there’s nothing more to say then it was two guys colliding. So there’s no intent to injure or anything like that.”

Julien says Savard will be fine for Game 7

Savard
RALEIGH — Second only to the sickening feeling of watching defenseman Zdeno Chara crumple to the ice in the second period of Game 5 had to be the stomach-turning emotion the Boston Bruins endured watching center Marc Savard go down after banging knees with Chad LaRose in the third period of tonight’s Game 6 at RBC Center.
Savard made his way to the bench with trainer Donnie Del Negro and played one more shift before hitting the showers. But head coach Claude Julien was quick to point out after his team’s victory, which forced a Game 7 in this Eastern Conference semifinal series, that it was his decision — not the medical staff’s — to force Savard to call it a night.
“I’m the one that sent him off. He just came up to me and I just said … at that time of the game, I just sent him off. He’ll be fine for next game,” said Julien after the 4-2 win.
Savard finished the night with one goal and a plus-1 rating in 13:24 of ice time.
