Final grades: Marco Sturm

Sturm/By S. Bradley
Congratulations are certainly in order for winger Marco Sturm. He was the leading scorer on the league’s worst-scoring team this season. That’s kind of like finishing in last place in an ugly contest.
And the way Sturm ran his total of goals up to 22 this season was as ugly as could be. His two two-goal games meant that he only scored in 20 of his 76 games played in the regular season. He seven of his goals in December, and then just four in March and April. His playoff performance was worthy of an award for best impersonation of a ghost, with no points in the six-game win over Buffalo. [Read more →]

His season terminated, Sturm vows to be back
BOSTON – Four months shy of his 32nd birthday, Bruins forward Marco Sturm suddenly has to re-start his career.
That’s what it’s like when you blow out your ACL and MCL in one play and will need six months of post-surgery recovery time.
“I’m still speechless, probably,” Sturm said today at TD Garden in his first public comments since he suffered the injury Saturday on the first shift of Game 1 of Boston’s Eastern Conference semifinal series with Philadelphia. [Read more →]

Sturm out for season

Sturm
BOSTON — Bruins head coach Claude Julien confirmed this afternoon what everyone suspected and some reported about winger Marco Sturm: he’s out for the season with a knee injury.
About an hour later, the official press release declared Sturm’s season done because of a torn ACL and MCL. He will have surgery in the next four to six weeks and then need six months time to recover. That means he’s highly unlikely to be available to start next season. [Read more →]

Sturm sighting
BOSTON — Injured Bruins forward Marco Sturm was spotted making his way from his car to the TD Garden on crutches this morning at around 10:40 a.m. That’s him to the far right of the photo in the white t-shirt.
Sturm didn’t seem to be favoring either leg, as he was using his feet to help move on the crutches. That could just be his weird way of using them. There were no braces or casts visible through his sweat pants. After Sturm was injured on his first shift Saturday, it was guessed that he did something to his right leg.
More later.

Sturm seeking a Bergeron boost

Sturm
BOSTON – The Bruins leading scorer hasn’t scored an important goal seemingly since the fall of the Berlin Wall, so head coach Claude Julien might try an old remedy to break out winger Marco Sturm from his prolonged slump.
During practice at TD Garden today in preparation for Monday night’s Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with Buffalo, Sturm skated in a familiar place – left wing on a line centered by Patrice Bergeron and flanked on the other side by Mark Recchi. [Read more →]

Sturm stuck in a hole again

Sturm
BOSTON – You have to give Marco Sturm credit for strategizing.
Back on Feb. 9, the Boston winger beat Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller in a victorious shootout for the Bruins with a wrist shot past the blocker side. In Boston’s 3-2 loss at TD Garden Tuesday, Sturm tried to beat Miller to the 5-hole on a penalty shot he earned just 3:20 into the contest.
Miller shut the shot down and denied 39 other Boston attempts on goal in the victory.

Sturm simply satisfactory

Sturm
Barring a major slump over the season’s final 18 games, winger Marco Sturm should not be forced to share in the blame for the Bruins’ horrid offense all season.
Lost in all the hoopla over the Matt Cooke non-suspension and the Bruins’ overtime loss to Toronto Tuesday was that Sturm scored his 20th goal of the season that night against the Leafs — in just 59 games played. He has now reached 20 goals in eight of the last nine seasons, a streak that was only broken by his season-shortening knee injury of last winter.

Welcome back: Marco Sturm

Sturm
During an offseason full of free-agent signings and trades all around the league, including in Boston, it was easy to overlook one addition the Bruins will be making without swinging a deal.
Winger Marco Sturm will be back to pursue his elusive target of 30 goals again this season after knee surgery cut short his season after just 19 games. [Read more →]

Steady as he goes for Sturm

Sturm
Today wasn’t just a chance to begin the hype for the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park but also to catch up with Boston Bruins star winger Marco Sturm, who attended the event while in Boston during a summer that has featured a couple trips back and forth between Boston and his offseason home in Germany.
Sturm is still rehabilitating after mid-season knee surgery for an injury that ended his season in December.
Things are looking up for the speedy winger. [Read more →]

2008-09 report card: Marco Sturm
With all the personal offensive records that fell or were challenged during the Boston Bruins’ march to the 2008-09 regular-season Eastern Conference title, this might’ve been the year Marco Sturm finally reached 30 goals. Three shy in his previous two seasons in black and gold, Sturm was just starting to get on pace when he suffered his first injury of the season.
That neck ailment, and then a serious knee injury that required Jan. 13 surgery, conspired to prevent Sturm from reaching his magic number or joining his teammates during most of their magical moments. Sturm’s speed and finishing ability — not to mention his crazy goal-celebration faces — were sorely missed despite Boston’s league-leading goals total. [Read more →]

Sturm surgery set

Sturm
BOSTON — Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli revealed today that winger Marco Sturm has surgery scheduled for Tuesday.
Sturm, out since Dec. 18 with a left knee injury, will have his meniscus repaired and it’s “probable” that he’ll also need his ACL repaired. Should he require surgery on his ACL, it’s highly unlikely he’d be able to return to play this season.
In 19 games this season, Sturm totaled seven goals and six assists for 13 points. A six-time 20-goal scorer, Sturm had missed 12 games with concussion-like symptoms before he returned against Toronto Dec. 18. That night he suffered the injury when he awkwardly went into the endboards.

Sturm injury severe enough to miss a month

Sturm
BOSTON — Marco Sturm’s long-term injury status means he has to miss at least 30 days of action, retroactive to last Thursday, when he suffered the injury in the win over Toronto.
After the Bruins’ 4-2 win over Carolina today Bruins head coach Claude Julien said that a specific timetable for Sturm’s return was still unknown because swelling is still preventing doctors from determining the severity of the injury. While the Bruins have not revealed the nature of the injury, Sturm was seen grabbing his left knee as he fell to the ice before being helped off.
The Germany native was seen walking through the dressing room without the aid of crutches. Previously this season, Sturm missed 12 games with the symptoms of a whiplash, so the Bruins have gotten used to not having him in the line-up.
“I think we’ve had a lot of practice with that,” Julien said. “Obviously it’s bad news we got in his situation. It is long term, so hopefully he’ll be back sooner than later. That is all we can do. We control what is in our hands. We have been through this before for most of last year. We just have to keep playing hard and hope that our team stays as healthy as possible.”

Sturm out, St. Pierre up

St. Pierre
BOSTON — The Boston Bruins announced they’ve recalled center Martin St. Pierre from Providence (AHL) and placed winger Marco Sturm on long-term injured reserve. This will be Sturm’s second stint on LTIR, as he had previously been on for symptoms of a whiplash.
While the Bruins haven’t revealed the specific injury, Sturm was seen grabbing his left knee before he was helped off the ice during Thursday night’s game with Toronto.
St. Pierre, who has 21 games of previous NHL experience with Chicago, is leading the P-Bruins with 35 points (10-25) in 30 games this season.

Sturm set for return to line-up

Sturm
BOSTON — After going through the Boston Bruins’ morning skate at the TD Banknorth Garden, winger Marco Sturm is pretty certain he’ll be able to return to the line-up tonight against Toronto.
Sturm has missed 12 games with concussion-like symptoms caused by whiplash. He took turns on the Bruins’ fourth line this morning along with Vladimir Sobotka, Stephane Yelle and Shawn Thornton. Head coach Claude Julien said he’ll monitor Sturm’s situation as the night goes on, should the German-born forward be in the line-up.
“Where I utilize him is not so much the question for me more than — when you haven’t played in a dozen games and we’ve got four games here in six nights — I think it’s important that we don’t overload him in that first game,” Julien said. “He may skip shifts, he may not be put in all situations he’s been in before. And that’s kind of the way I work guys back in the line-up.”

Sturms says he could be set for Leafs

Sturm
Boston Bruins winger Marco Sturm, who has missed 12 games while suffering the effects of a whiplash, practiced again today, as every healthy Bruins player hit the ice for practice at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington.
Sturm said he feels good and if head coach Claude Julien asks him if he’s ready to play he’ll answer in the affirmative. Sturm said he hasn’t felt any symptoms since last week. The veteran skated on a four-man fourth-line unit with Vladimir Sobotka, Shawn Thornton and Stephane Yelle.
The only Bruins players missing today were defenseman Aaron Ward (leg) and forward Petteri Nokelainen (upper body).
