Rigorous Recchi regimen readies him for another NHL season

Recchi/By S. Bradley

About 20 years ago, Pittsburgh Penguins teammates Mark Recchi and Jay Caufield started doing some plyometric workouts and drills for explosiveness during the offseason.

Now both men still do those same workouts every August, except Caufield is long retired and Recchi is about to begin yet another NHL season this fall at the ripe age of 42 with the Bruins.

Recchi tries to rationalize a potential Savard deal

Recchi/By S. Bradley

Mark Recchi has obviously decided to return to the Bruins without testing the free-agent market July 1 because he thinks the club is going in the right direction and will be a Stanley Cup contender in 2010-11.

Whether Marc Savard will be a part of that team remains to be seen, as it’s a well-know fact now that Boston has been shopping the star center since last week. Most can’t wrap their head around how the Bruins would be a better club without their perennial leading scorer. But there are also salary-cap implications that might be hindering other plans general manager Peter Chiarelli has in mind.

Recchi’s been ready to return since Bruins’ playoff demise

Recchi/By S. Bradley

Even though it took until draft weekend for his camp to officially come to terms on a new deal with the Bruins, winger Mark Recchi says he knew he wanted to return for another season, and do it in Boston, almost as soon as the 2009-10 season ended in shambles against Philadelphia.

All’s positive on Recchi, Boychuk fronts

Recchi/By S. Bradley

You didn’t need a “Peter Chiarelli decorder ring” to know that when the Bruins general manager talked about progress in talks with his potential free agents, he was mostly referring to forward Mark Recchi and defenseman Johnny Boychuk.

The word from other sources with knowledge of the situation backs up Chiarelli’s assertion.

Final grades: Mark Recchi

Recchi/By S. Bradley

When he was acquired from Tampa Bay by the Bruins at the 2009 trade deadline, Mark Recchi was considered a solid, supplemental player for a team gearing up for a championship run. When he re-signed with Boston in the aftermath of that failed effort to secure a title, Recchi still looked like just a piece of the puzzle.

However, in 2009-10, during a season that saw him turn 42 years old, Recchi emerged as one of Boston’s best and most reliable players in all three zones. [Read more →]

Importance of retaining Recchi, Thornton can’t be overestimated

Recchi/By Sharon Bradley

Without getting into specific names of players, we know a few things about the Bruins’ offseason game plan.

General manager Peter Chiarelli is going to try to upgrade his league-worst offense, retain the services of his three solid free-agent defenseman and open some spots up front for the eventual No. 2 draft pick and a couple prospects by letting some free agents walk away.

Two players, however, that shouldn’t be allowed to even get on the open market July 1 – let alone leave – are wingers Mark Recchi and Shawn Thornton, who both provide elements to the Bruins on and off the ice that would be difficult to replace. [Read more →]

Wrecked Recchi probably will return

Recchi/By Sharon Bradley

BOSTON — Typically a master orator after Bruins games, forward Mark Recchi was unusually, but understandably, somber in his postgame comments about the Bruins’ 4-3 loss in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series with Philadelphia tonight at TD Garden.

The 42-year-old obviously never knows when a game will be his last, and to go out after blowing a 3-0 series lead and a 3-0 lead in the final game would be a crying shame. That’s why Recchi sounded somewhat optimistic the wait period for his Hall-of-Fame induction wouldn’t be this summer.

Bruins can’t ask much more from Recchi

Recchi

WILMINGTON, Mass. – This seasons he’s been a solid candidate to be honored as one of the Bruins’ most valuable player, so Mark Recchi has come to a revelation that even at 42 his Hall-of-Fame career might not be done.

“I still feel great and it’s the end of the season. I’m definitely leaning towards the other way than I’m leaning toward retirement,” he said after practice today at Ristuccia Arena. “We’ll see at the end of the year. I’m still enjoying it, I still have a lot of fun and this time of year coming up here is what we ultimately play for and I’m looking forward to it soon.”

While there won’t be much postseason hardware coming his way, nor is it probable the Bruins will bring him any playoff glory, Recchi can at least take solace that the Boston chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association has named him its nominee for the 2010 Masterton Trophy. Rest not an option for Recchi

Recchi

BOSTON – The plan when the season started was to give veteran winger Mark Recchi some games off over the course of the year to keep him fresh for the stretch run.

Well, the Bruins are right in the thick of the stretch run and Recchi still hasn’t missed a game. Not only that, but unlike many of his teammates, he hasn’t taken any “nights off” while dressed for the game eight during Boston’s up-and-down campaign.

“We need to play, I need to play and I still feel great,” Recchi said after he set the tone by drawing an early penalty and finished with a goal and an assist in Boston’s 5-0 win over Calgary Saturday at TD Garden. “So, I’ve got tons of energy and coach has been good with me and giving me days off. As long as I keep staying fresh, I don’t need to take any games off.” [Read more →]

NHLPA_logo_RGBThe NHLPA today officially announced that by a vote of 25-5 a resolution to form a committee to review its operations and submit its findings to the NHLPA Executive Board has passed.

Another role for Recchi

Recchi

Recchi

As if he didn’t already have enough on his hands with trying to help his Boston Bruins break out of their rut of mediocrity and find his own offensive game, Mark Recchi might be playing a larger role in the NHLPA in the months ahead.

According to Darren Dreger of TSN.ca, Recchi will be part of a four-player review committee that will look into the entire PA operation. Because there was not a quorum on Sunday’s conference call, one more vote is needed to pass the motion to form the committee.

Welcome back: Mark Recchi

Recchi

Recchi

The storybook ending would give Mark Recchi the chance to hoist the Stanley Cup over his head for a third and final time now that he’s decided to return to the Boston Bruins for what will probably be his last NHL season.

For the fantasy to become a reality, a lot of things have to fall into place for the current Bruins. One thing that’s certain, however, is that Recchi will be a driver and not a passenger on the road to a potential Cup win. [Read more →]

Now the Bruins know they need to win one for Recchi

Mark Recchi wants to do this in another uniform this season.

Mark Recchi wants to do this in another uniform this season.

Future Hall-of-Fame winger Mark Recchi, who re-signed with the Boston Bruins for a one-year, $1 million deal yesterday, has already given his teammates all the inspiration they need and we’re still two months away from training camp.

The 20-year veteran and two-time Stanley Cup winner made it clear during a conference call today that this will probably be his last pursuit of career Cup No. 3.

“I’ve got to be honest with you, I think this is probably going to be it,” said Recchi from his offseason home in Pittsburgh. “I want to go out and I want to have another big one. I want to finish it off right. I want to go out and try and win another championship. I want to help the team be successful. And I would say this is probably it.” [Read more →]
