Another role for Recchi

Recchi

Recchi

As if he didn’t already have enough on his hands with trying to help his Boston Bruins break out of their rut of mediocrity and find his own offensive game, Mark Recchi might be playing a larger role in the NHLPA in the months ahead.

According to Darren Dreger of TSN.ca, Recchi will be part of a four-player review committee that will look into the entire PA operation. Because there was not a quorum on Sunday’s conference call, one more vote is needed to pass the motion to form the committee.

Welcome back: Mark Recchi

Recchi

Recchi

The storybook ending would give Mark Recchi the chance to hoist the Stanley Cup over his head for a third and final time now that he’s decided to return to the Boston Bruins for what will probably be his last NHL season.

For the fantasy to become a reality, a lot of things have to fall into place for the current Bruins. One thing that’s certain, however, is that Recchi will be a driver and not a passenger on the road to a potential Cup win. [Read more →]

Now the Bruins know they need to win one for Recchi

Mark Recchi wants to do this in another uniform this season.

Mark Recchi wants to do this in another uniform this season.

Future Hall-of-Fame winger Mark Recchi, who re-signed with the Boston Bruins for a one-year, $1 million deal yesterday, has already given his teammates all the inspiration they need and we’re still two months away from training camp.

The 20-year veteran and two-time Stanley Cup winner made it clear during a conference call today that this will probably be his last pursuit of career Cup No. 3.

“I’ve got to be honest with you, I think this is probably going to be it,” said Recchi from his offseason home in Pittsburgh. “I want to go out and I want to have another big one. I want to finish it off right. I want to go out and try and win another championship. I want to help the team be successful. And I would say this is probably it.” [Read more →]

Recchi returning to Boston

Recchi

Recchi

The Boston Bruins have officially announced. Recchi will hold a conference call tomorrow at noon.

TSN reports that the Boston Bruins have re-signed veteran winger Mark Recchi to a one-year, $1 million contract.

Recchi, a trade-deadline-day acquisition by the Bruins last spring totaled 10-6-16 offensive numbers in 18 regular-season games after moving from Tampa Bay. In 11 playoff games, he totaled 3-3-6. But most famously he toughed it out after suffering with a kidney stone and having surgery to remove it during the seven-game loss to Carolina in the second round of the playoffs.

This move suggest even more that the Bruins’ roster will look almost identitcal when they open camp this season to the one that finished last season.

Terrific 10: Prelude to the playoffs rocks the Garden

Recchi

Recchi

Bring on the playoffs!

That’s what everyone was screaming by the time Mark Recchi’s overtime goal lifted the Boston Bruins over the Montreal Canadiens April 9 at TD Banknorth Garden. It was pretty obvious the Bruins and Habs were going to meet in a first-round playoff series starting a week later, so Boston’s comeback win sent a message to the Bruins’ hated rivals and earned the No. 6 spot on my list of the club’s top 10 victories of the 2008-09 regular season. 2008-09 report card: Mark Recchi

Recchi

Recchi

Winger Marco Sturm’s knee surgery left the Boston Bruins without a third left winger for their group of top nine forwards and a left-handed shot for their power play.

So after kicking the tires on a few guys, general manager Peter Chiarelli swung a deal with Tampa Bay to acquire future Hall-of-Famer Mark Recchi. While prospects Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums, who went to the Lightning in the deal, might turn into formidable NHL regulars in the future, this deal will always be a winner because without Recchi the Bruins might not have hung onto the top seed in the Eastern Conference, let alone won a round of the playoffs.

Recchi proved to be the perfect fit in the lineup and the locker room, where his Stanley Cup-winning pedigree made him an instant member of the Bruins’ leadership corps. [Read more →]

Bergeron was surrounded by banged-up wingers

Recchi

Recchi

BOSTON — When Mark Recchi is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame some time in the next decade, the story of  how he battled through the 2009 Eastern Conference semifinals at 41 years old will be right up there with the tales of his Cup wins and all the goals he scored.

If you can believe it, doctors discovered Recchi had a kidney stone while examining the veteran Boston Bruins winger’s ribs the morning after Game 4 of the Carolina series. The night before Game 7 — 5 p.m. to be exact — Recchi actually had surgery to remove the stone.

“Obviously, I was pretty sore. I don’t know if anyone has ever had one of them, but I don’t wish it on my worst enemy,” Recchi said today during the Bruins’ year-end media availabilities. “But we all play through stuff and it’s really no big deal. The guys, at this time of year, everybody plays through a lot of things. So it just felt like I could still help and still play and I went out there and tried.” [Read more →]

Bruin of the Week

Recchi

Recchi

It was a real Jekyl & Hyde week for the Boston Bruins, as they looked to close out the regular season with some positive vibes but also rest up and avoid injury.

The Bruins won twice and lost twice, and one player stood out through all four games. Veteran winger Mark Recchi, who at 41 has played with the energy of a 21-year-old since joining the Bruins, tallied three goals and four assists in the quartet of contests. For his efforts, which also included an even plus/minus, Recchi is my Bruin of the Week.

Recchi’s best performance came in Thursday night’s dramatic overtime win over Montreal. Playing on the Boston side of the rivalry for the first time, Recchi scored one goal in regulation on a power play and then ended the contest after a great defensive play and pass by linemate Patrice Bergeron.

Other candidates this week were winger Phil Kessel (3 GP, 5-1-6, plus-2) and center Marc Savard (4 GP, 0-3-3).

Kalman’s Column: Under-the-radar Recchi a real prize for Bruins

Mark Recchi suits the Bruins.

Mark Recchi suits the Bruins.

BOSTON — I’m sort of ashamed to admit that I knew nothing, other than what it said on his stats sheet, about Mark Recchi before the veteran forward landed in Boston in a trade-deadline deal with Tampa Bay.

The guy has been in the league since since I was a freshman in high school, but he just never caught my eye. Maybe I just always chalked him up as someone who benefited playing alongside the greats of the game — the likes of Mario Lemieux and Eric Lindros and others obviously grabbing most of the headlines.

Then he arrives in the Hub, you see the George Costanza hairline up close and realize you’re a measly sport writer who can look eye to eye with the guy and you say, ‘More than 500 NHL goals have come out of that?’

One month later, I’d have to be blind not to realize why this guy is ticketed to Toronto, when (if?) he ever stops playing. It’s not just the nine goals — including two tonight in a 5-4 overtime win over Montreal at TD Banknorth Garden — that have impressed. It’s his mere presence in front of the net, seemingly every time he’s on the ice, that has made a huge difference for the Bruins. He was brought here to bolster the power play by giving the Bruins a left-handed shot with a finishing touch, and he’s been that and more. Battling in the corners, along the walls, forechecking and backchecking with abadon. It seems like Recchi can do it all. [Read more →]

Bruin of the Week

Recchi

Recchi

Some trades require weeks, months or even years to grade.

The Boston Bruins’ acquisition of future Hall of Famer Mark Recchi from Tampa Bay is only a little more than three weeks in the rear view mirror, but it’s definitely been a winner.

During the Bruins’ two games this week, Recchi potted three goals to run his total for the season to 20 and his total as a Bruin to seven in 11 games. For his efforts this week, Recchi is my Bruin of the Week.

In the win over Toronto, Recchi scored twice — both on the power play, and both to tie the score. In Philadelphia, Recchi’s goal stopped any momentum the Flyers were building and gave Boston a two-goal lead in the third period. In addition to his goal total, Recchi has brought the Bruins a net-front presence they lacked before the trade. Recchi even drew a big crosschecking penalty in front of the net against the Flyers that earned the club a 5-on-3 it scored on.

Other candidates this week were defensemen Matt Hunwick (0-3-3, plus-3) and Dennis Wideman (1-3-4, plus-1) and goaltender Tim Thomas (season-high 45 saves to beat Philly).

‘Recchs’ in effect

Recchi

Recchi

BOSTON — The Boston Bruins acquired Mark Recchi to do the things that have made him a potential Hall of Famer down the road — go to the net and score goals.

In just his second game in black and gold, the 41-year-old left winger — affectionately known as ‘Recchs’ — scored two goals that totaled about 2 feet in combined distance to help the Bruins down the Chicago Blackhawks today at TD Banknorth Garden.

One goal came on the cycle with his new linemates, as Patrice Bergeron passed to Chuck Kobasew in the high slot for a shot. Recchi knocked the puck down and scored on the second effort.

“I’m going to the net for those guys. They’re good players. It was nice to get that practice in with them yesterday and we did some 3-on-3 stuff, some cycle stuff, and we scored a goal on a cycle,” said Recchi after the win. “So that’s the stuff we’ll continue to work on. They’re both talented players and I’m going to go to the net and try to open some space up and see how it goes from there.” [Read more →]

Recchi welcomed with open arms

Recchi

Recchi

BOSTON — You’d expect the Boston Bruins players would be excited to greet a potential future Hall of Famer into their mix.

And Mark Recchi felt that love right away after he was acquired from Tampa Bay yesterday.

Aaron (Ward) texted me right away yesterday. And Chuck (Kobasew) picked up Steve (Montador) and I up this morning. It’s good. Guys are always … that’s the good thing about hockey players. Guys reach out to you and they help you out anyway they can. So it’s no different here,” said Recchi after his first morning skate as a member of the Bruins today at TD Banknorth Garden. Trade Deadline ‘09: More Cup experience comes to Boston with Recchi

Recchi the champion.

Recchi the champion.

BOSTON — Winger Mark Recchi, acquired today by the Boston Bruins from the Tampa Bay Lightning, has already won two Stanley Cups.

But just like fellow Cup-winning Bruins Aaron Ward, Shawn Thornton and Stephane Yelle, don’t expect him to be complacent upon joining the top team in the Eastern Conference.

“It means everything to me. That’s what 99 percent of the hockey players play for is to win a Stanley Cup,” said Recchi on a conference call after he was acquired along with a second-round pick in 2010 for Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums. “And to get into the playoffs and get that opportunity again, it’s remarkable, especially the way the year’s gone here and not knowing what was going to happen. To get picked up by a first-place team really is nice and comforting that it’s a team that thinks I can help. And I’m going to go try to do everything I can to do that.” [Read more →]
