Healthy start for Stuart

Stuart
WILMINGTON, Mass. — When we last saw Mark Stuart, he wasn’t quite himself during Boston’s playoff ouster against Philadelphia. He was still on antibiotics for his hand infection and couldn’t quite catch up to the speed of Stanley Cup playoff hockey after rejoining the team mid-series.

Season of Stuart starts this fall

Stuart/By S. Bradley
You’ve heard of the “Summer of George.” Well welcome to the 2010-11 Bruins’ version: “Season of Stuart.”
At least that’s how it’s going to have to be for the Boston blueliner now that he has re-signed with the club for just one year at $1.675 million as a restricted free agent. Next summer, Stuart will be unrestricted barring a long-term extension – which he won’t be eligible to sign until after Jan. 1, 2011.

Chiarelli says he’s ‘standing pat’
WILMINGTON, Mass. — With Mark Stuart signed to a one-year deal, the Bruins now have just around $2 million left in cap space and still have restricted free agents Blake Wheeler, Adam McQuaid and Gregory Campbell to re-sign.
It would seem that a move might be imminent, but general manager Peter Chiarelli says that’s not the case.

Stuart deal done
The Bruins have made it official with Mark Stuart.
The veteran defenseman signs a one-year deal. I’ll have more later this morning after Peter Chiarelli and Stuart speak about the deal.

Reports: Stuart signs

Stuart
Multiple outlets are reporting the Bruins have re-signed defenseman Mark Stuart for one year at $1.675 million.
Stuart was a restricted free agent who turned down arbitration because Boston and his agent Matt Keator were close to agreeing to a deal. The team has not yet announced the deal because they typically don’t put out press releases after 9 p.m.

Another Stuart comparable?
The Washington Capitals today signed 24-year-old defenseman Jeff Schultz to a four-year, $11 million deal to avoid arbitration.
Schultz was a plus-50 last season playing on a great offensive team alongside Mike Green. Throw that number out and look at his stats: nine goals, 44 assists and 53 points. Over those seasons he missed nine regular-season games.

Wheeler files, Stuart doesn’t
The agent for restricted free agents Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart, Matt Keator, confirmed that the winger has filed for salary arbitration but the defenseman has not.
“I think we’re close enough to a deal, a one-year deal, that we decided not to file,” Keator said of his talks on a new contract for Stuart. “We’ll see where that goes.”
UPDATE: Newly acquired forward Gregory Campbell was also among the 31 players to file for arbitration.

Stuart’s salary situation

Stuart/By S. Bradley
It’s much harder to find a comparable for Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart than it is for winger Blake Wheeler. So much of what Stuart provides Boston is intangible — toughness, solid defensive play and leadership.
However, that won’t stop me from trying to break down the situation.

The agent for restricted free agent Bruins winger Blake Wheeler and defenseman Mark Stuart, Matt Keator, said he plans to speak with Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli this weekend about both his clients, as the deadline to file for arbitration approaches 5 p.m. Monday.

Final grades: Mark Stuart

Stuart/By S. Bradley
There were high hopes that Mark Stuart’s third full year in the NHL would be the season he ascended to the Bruins’ top four on the back end and assumed a major leadership position.
The injury bug had other ideas.

Stuart, Hunwick could solidify Bruins’ back end

Hunwick needs to take a step forward/By S. Bradley
BOSTON – Life could be made so much easier for Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli if two defensemen that are already his property can develop into the type of two-way, puck-moving guys him and 29 other GMs are always shopping around for.
Mark Stuart and Matt Hunwick both emerged from the 2009-10 season after extremely different performances. If both can apply the lessons they learned this season in the near future, the Bruins could have two blueliners to build around for years to come. [Read more →]

Stuart seeking Game 5 turnaround

Stuart
WILMINGTON, Mass. – His chin so closely resembles an anvil, you expect it to weigh as much as an object that could flatten Wile E. Coyote.
You’d also expect that Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart would have a problem keeping his chin up regardless of how things are going.
Today, two days removed from his bittersweet return to the lineup and one day before Game 5 of Boston’s Eastern Conference semifinal series with Philadelphia, the veteran blueliner was trying to raise his head and look forward to better days on the ice. [Read more →]

Stuart steaming over his struggles

PHILADELPHIA — On the ice, you won’t find many players more honest than Mark Stuart.
After the Bruins’ 5-4 overtime loss to Phiadelphia tonight in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series at Wachovia Center, Stuart proved he can be brutally honest off the ice as well.

PHILADELPHIA — Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart, out since April 1 with a finger infection, has been medically cleared to return to the lineup for tonight’s Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Flyers at Wachovia Center.
Head coach Claude Julien said the final decision about Stuart’s playing status will be made at game time. The Bruins have an absence on the back end with the injury to Adam McQuaid.

McQuaid ‘very doubtful’ and Stuart’s on the cusp

McQuaid
PHILADELPHIA — It’s all but certain that a “lower-body” injury suffered in the first period of Game 3 against Philadelphia will keep defenseman Adam McQuaid out of the Bruins’ Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series Friday night.
“[He’s] very doubtful for tomorrow, but then will be a day-to-day situation,” said head coach Claude Julien, who gave most of his team a day off the ice.
