BOSTON — The summer of discontent over the end of last season and anticipation of what the 2010-11 Bruins season will bring finally officially ended for Boston with a team of Bruins rookies beating a similar squad of New York Islanders, 5-2, at TD Garden.
Even more impressive than the amount of talent Boston put on the ice was the amount of people who showed up to see the game.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli made what he termed “preemptive moves” before today’s opening of the free agent market by acquiring Nathan Horton, drafting Tyler Seguin and re-signing Mark Recchi, Dennis Seidenberg and Johnny Boychuk.
So that all he did on “Free Agent Frenzy Day” was retain winger Daniel Paille didn’t leave the GM wanting. Chiarelli said he spoke to a couple agents and a couple GMs for talks that will probably be revisited over the next few days and weeks.

BOSTON — If free agency opened today instead of Thursday, the Bruins would not be able to make a big splash.
“Right now we don’t have the cap space to go out and make a big deal,” said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli after a TD Garden press conference to introduce Tyler Seguin and Nathan Horton to Boston. “We don’t. But that could happen. We could make a trade and there could be cap space. It doesn’t mean we have someone in mind.”

As top defense prospects Brandon Gormley and Cam Fowler continued to slide down the draft board tonight at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, it looked like the Bruins might have reason to regret trading away the No. 15 pick earlier this week in the deal for Florida’s Nathan Horton.
Fowler went at No. 12 to Anaheim and Gormley was the next pick to Phoenix, so neither made it to 15. Had the Bruins still had that pick, they perhaps could’ve parlayed it to move up and grab one of the two blueliners who had been projected to go in the top five, or at least the top 10.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli talked again today with the media in Los Angeles about the slight difference his staff has between Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin and how he’s not desperate to trade up with Edmonton.
“I’m not in a position right now, based on how big I feel and how big our group feels the gap is,” he said. “I’m not in a position right now. I don’t know if I ever will be, to go to Edmonton and say, ‘Here’s this, this, this, and this, let us take our guy.’ I think those players are so good at that 1-2 that it’s not worth, to me, to go and give something where I think I could get something somewhere else.”
He later added, and this was the best part: “I’m not jumping over chairs to get that player.”

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli held a conference call this morning with the media to talk about the draft. As far as the Taylor Hall/Tyler Seguin debate, he said “right now, as of today, we have one guy over the other … it’s very close.”

During the 2009-10 season, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli must have felt like he was out in a sail boat that kept springing leaks. And every time he plugged one, another started spewing water.
The laundry list of injuries over the course of the campaign included Marc Savard three times, Milan Lucic twice, Andrew Ference off and on, Patrice Bergeron, Mark Stuat and Dennis Seidenberg. The Bruins’ organizational depth, which Chiarelli is responsible for was tested, and barely passed its trial by fire. (more…)

No layover for the Bruins this year
It’s a nightmare the Bruins would rather not relive. They were “rewarded” for their dominance last spring in a four-game first-round sweep of Montreal with 10 days off before they could face Carolina, which won its series in seven games, in the second round.
Boston won the first game but then dropped three straight in rather pedestrian fashion. The Bruins’ efforts to rally from behind, of course, ended in Game 7 in overtime. After eliminating Buffalo in six games, the Bruins now await the identity of their second-round foe. The Washington-Montreal Game 7 winner will determine whether Boston faces Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. (more…)

The balls will be pulled in New York, and the results will be announced in Toronto Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on Versus and TSN. Yes, the 2010 NHL Draft Drawing is sure to be fun for the whole family.
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli will be in Toronto hoping the drawing is more than just fun. He wants what all the other GMs involved want — the No. 1 pick. Nonetheless, the Bruins’ GM wouldn’t reveal during a conference call about the playoffs whether he’s bringing any lucky talisman’s or wearing his lucky tie to the event. (more…)
