Time to take stock of prospects
You might have deduced based on yesterday’s poll question that it’s time to take a glance at the Bruins’ prospect pool and determine which players are closest to making an impact at the NHL level.
And that’s just what I’m going to do over the next few days.

Turco is on my free agent All-Star team
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli repeated several times during his Thursday conference call with the media that there aren’t “a ton” of free agents still available since things have slowed down.
Presumably, the leftovers cannot reach a ton because Keith Tkachuk is retired and not on the market. Oh, rim shot.
All kidding aside, there aren’t a lot of quality players available, but the quality of those remaining on the open range is pretty high.

Chiarelli
In a conference call to discuss his official signing of four players — Gregory Campbell, Adam McQuaid, Andrew Bodnarchuk and Jeff Lovecchio — today, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli plotted out his tentative plan as far as it deals with his team’s upcoming offseason maneuvers.
“After we get Wheels (Blake Wheeler) done, we’re going to be relatively quiet for the time being,” Chiarelli said about signing the restricted free agent.

The Bruins today officially announced the signing of restricted free agents Gregory Campbell and Adam McQuaid to two-year contracts, and defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk to a one-year deal. Winger Jeff LoVecchio’s new deal was also part of the announcement, but he had agreed to terms last week.
Updated: Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said that McQuaid’s deal is a two-way deal for the first year and a one-way for the second. He will require waivers, however, to be sent to the AHL this fall.
According to several Tweets, the Campbell contract is worth $1 million this season and $1.2 million this year. That’s a $1.1 million cap hit and gives the Bruins 10 forwards with a base salary of $1 million or more, including two players projected to be on the fourth line.

Campbell
More often than not since Peter Chiarelli took over as general manager, the Bruins have avoided arbitration with eligible players.
It appears that trend is close to continuing.

Ference/By S. Bradley
While one of the NHL’s premier players continues to delay his decision on which team he’ll let pay him upwards of $100 million for the next decade or longer, a key Bruins performer took time today to do something much more meaningful.
Bruins defenseman and devoted environmentalist Andrew Ference and his wife Krista joined a group of athletes and representatives of the Sierra Club on a visit to areas in Louisiana affected by the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

1 Comment |Arbitration dates set
The NHLPA has yet to release the dates officially, but it seems that if the Bruins go to arbitration with Blake Wheeler and Gregory Campbell, they now know when they’ll be doing the hearing.

1 Comment |Five mid-July questions for the Bruins to answer
The draft, the early days of free agency and the development camp are now history, and the dog days of summer are coming at us fast.
But unlike past years, when most hockey business would be done by now, there’s still a lot of work to complete — for the Bruins and other teams, in particular ones chasing Ilya Kovalchuk.

4 Comments |Five post-development camp questions

Colborne/By S. Bradley
If the five days of the Bruins’ 2010 development camp proved anything, it’s that the fans have forgiven the franchise after blowing that 3-0 playoff lead, as evidenced by the crows at the camp; the Bruins have some decent talent that they’ve drafted the last few years; and everyone’s overreacting a little bit to the club’s depth.

WILMINGTON, Mass. — The Bruins counted nearly 2,000 fans in attendance today for the last sessions of 2010 development camp. And I have no reason to doubt that attendance total.

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Tyler Seguin was able to strut his stuff during a scrimmage on the final day of 2010 development camp at Ristuccia Arena.
Centering a line with Jared Knight and Jordan Caron on his wings, Seguin lived up to the hype in front of nearly 1,500 fans that turned out to get a glance.

Battling in the scrimmage/By S. Bradley
WILMINGTON, Mass. — The Bruins’ prospects finished up the 2010 development camp at Ristuccia Arena today by going through some drills and then scrimmaging. The scrimmage included 5-on-5, 4-on-4, 3-on-3 and then a shootout. I’ll have some video up later today.
The stars of the scrimmage were far and away the line of Tyler Seguin, Jared Knight and Jordan Caron. Knight’s laser wrist shot from the slot that nearly ripped through the netting top shelf was one of the highlights of the day.

1 Comment |Season of Stuart starts this fall

Stuart/By S. Bradley
You’ve heard of the “Summer of George.” Well welcome to the 2010-11 Bruins’ version: “Season of Stuart.”
At least that’s how it’s going to have to be for the Boston blueliner now that he has re-signed with the club for just one year at $1.675 million as a restricted free agent. Next summer, Stuart will be unrestricted barring a long-term extension – which he won’t be eligible to sign until after Jan. 1, 2011.
